Once again, certain people are treating a writer’s speculation as gospel. this is what I keep saying about predetermined narratives.

While I’m sure Olivo’s name has been mentioned, I doubt anyone who is part of the decision making process is yelling “that’s out guy”.

I was asking about him 3 years ago, but his window has closed.

Mets fans, remember who is writing the story Joel Sherman, a ny writer who is a yankees fan, always creating controversial articles in detriment of the NYM. 1st. of all and i am not defending the owners or the Front office, but the signing of Olivo goes against the OBP policy of sibermetrics, always read between the line when Joel is writing about the Mets, Melkis Cabrera signing, 143 millions to Wright etc.

The only problem I have with this is the relatively young pitching staff we’ve got:
Harvey, Niese, Gee and hopefully Wheeler.
Would really like to see a catcher with good defense and the intuitive ability to call a good game.

Thole had only caught as a primary position for three years (239 games total) when he was called up. He was signed as a first baseman. He made the switch at St. Lucie in 2008. Before that, he had caught a total of 26 games in 3 years. Basically, he’s still learning his position. Catchers usually have a LOT more experience before getting to the bigs. So, it’s not all his fault. He was really rushed because of our lack of catchers and ownership’s sudden lack of funds due to a certain felon we’re all familiar with.

I wouldn’t mind Olivo instead of bringing back Shoppach if Sandy can bring him in on the cheap for just 1 year- 1.5MM or 2MM. He’s known as a pretty good defensive catcher and plays with a fiery attitude and edge which might rub off some on his soft teammates.

I like to think of it as a balance to the 1 sided agenda driven comments and posts that dominate the comments section. And pointing out silliness and hypocrisy where it exists.

If people are going to make silly blanket statements they need to be called out for it.

and what the hell does pointing out that every team, even good ones, pick up guys that are released by other teams have to do with supporting the FO?

K, I kinda like the opposing views. It’s sorta like politics, Neither is right but they kinda balance each other out lol. Olivo Is not an answer for this club but neither is he gonna sink it. He is a role guy that could be beneficial or a non-issue. So optimism on his part would be a way of seeing that if it doesn’t pan out your not out much but if it does it could help.

Would rather trade for a younger catcher you can develop. Catching seems to be a tough spot for the Mets as far as player development. I thought Thole would have been more successful, but I don’t know if that is more of an indication of the lack of system development or of his limited ability. Mets have always traded for an established catcher to provide leadership & power though. I am not sold on Olivo.

You want a good young catcher in a trade. You best be ready to give up a stud, a real one, not a Met fantasy stud. You want a catcher in free agency. They are all basically the same. The Mets will get whoever is the last one signed.

Olivo would be an upgrade over Thole but not by much. There’s a reason he’s been with like six teams in six years. Maybe pitchers don’t like throwing to him?
