Mets Desperate For Cheap Power, Eying Miguel Olivo At Catcher

The Mets are desperate to find power at minimal costs this offseason and at no position more than catcher, where their five homers last season were by far the fewest in the majors, says Joel Sherman in his column for the New York Post.

One name to keep an eye on is Miguel Olivo. who is someone they are eyeing this offseason. When the Mets made their priority trade list in July, the Rockies’ Ramon Hernandez was on top for catchers, but Olivo was among the secondary candidates along with Kelly Shoppach, whom they ultimately obtained. But the indications I have received are the Mets are unlikely to retain Shoppach.

The Mariners recently announced they would not pick up Olivo’s $3 million 2013 option. He is far from a perfect candidate; his .239 on-base percentage last season was the worst in the majors (minimum 300 plate appearances) since Corey Patterson’s .238 in 2008.

Still, playing in a tough home park for long balls the past two seasons in Seattle, Olivo hit 31 homers. He has reached double digits every season since 2006, a period when only Brian McCann (151) and Mike Napoli(120) have more homers by a catcher than Olivo (112).

Olivo lost playing time to Jesus Montero and John Jaso last season, buy has averaged 16 home runs with 53 RBI over the last seven seasons and has a .427 slugging percentage over that span. The 34-year-old has some decent pop for a backstop and would help.

The Mets recently added Anthony Recker for some minor league depth. There’s not much in the way of options at catcher in free agency and I was hoping this would be one of those upgrades they would make via a trade.

  • Another offseason of scraping the bottom of the barrel.

    • they already have their core of stars locked up for big money deals. Now just filling in the margins with the budget friendly spare parts. That’s what teams do, right?

      • Stick,

“they already have their core of stars locked up for big money deals.”

LMFAO!!!! What core of STARS??? David Wright and………………{FLATLINE}………………….Im drawing Blanks!

  • Dumpster diving.

  • The “New York” Met picking up the Mariners’ trash. Awesome…

    • one man’s treasure!

hey, over the last few years when the Phils were dominating the league, they were picking up every scrub the Mets DFA’d it seemed. So it happens.

      • Is it your purpose to put a spin on every move the Mets make or dont make this offseason again? Cant you ever just comment on the subject at hand without spinning it for Alderson like they do on MetsBlog. Whenever I read your comments it’s always to bash any criticism of the front office or to spin any Mets news to protect them for some reason. I dont even think you know you’re doing it. But you are. What’s your deal? Try using even a tiny iota of objectivity in the future so at least you dont come off looking like such a complete shill. People get on Bayonne’s case here but you and a couple of others are just like him and the core only with opposing agendas.

        • K, I kinda like the opposing views. It’s sorta like politics, Neither is right but they kinda balance each other out lol. Olivo Is not an answer for this club but neither is he gonna sink it. He is a role guy that could be beneficial or a non-issue. So optimism on his part would be a way of seeing that if it doesn’t pan out your not out much but if it does it could help.

        • I like to think of it as a balance to the 1 sided agenda driven comments and posts that dominate the comments section. And pointing out silliness and hypocrisy where it exists.

If people are going to make silly blanket statements they need to be called out for it.

and what the hell does pointing out that every team, even good ones, pick up guys that are released by other teams have to do with supporting the FO?

  • so he doesn’t get many hits, but tends to hit for power when he does make contact. All fine and dandy, but the more important question is, how is he as a defensive catcher and leading a pitching staff? If he can do that well, you can live with the bat at the bottom of the order, as he holds the fort while one of the MiL gets ready for the majors.

    • Agree.
Since we’re likely to be carrying 2 catchers that don’t hit for average, I’d like one of them at least to have above defensive skills and who can also throw out runners on the base paths.

  • Well I uh um well Ok I guess? I don’t see the upside but whatevers clever.

  • Olivo would be an upgrade over Thole but not by much. There’s a reason he’s been with like six teams in six years. Maybe pitchers don’t like throwing to him?

  • I got a guy who pumps gas near me they can get for Minimum wage!
I’m sure he can out hit this guy!

  • You want a good young catcher in a trade. You best be ready to give up a stud, a real one, not a Met fantasy stud. You want a catcher in free agency. They are all basically the same. The Mets will get whoever is the last one signed.

  • .239 OBP? …how is that even possible.. I’ll Pass

  • Would rather trade for a younger catcher you can develop. Catching seems to be a tough spot for the Mets as far as player development. I thought Thole would have been more successful, but I don’t know if that is more of an indication of the lack of system development or of his limited ability. Mets have always traded for an established catcher to provide leadership & power though. I am not sold on Olivo.

    • Thole had only caught as a primary position for three years (239 games total) when he was called up. He was signed as a first baseman. He made the switch at St. Lucie in 2008. Before that, he had caught a total of 26 games in 3 years. Basically, he’s still learning his position. Catchers usually have a LOT more experience before getting to the bigs. So, it’s not all his fault. He was really rushed because of our lack of catchers and ownership’s sudden lack of funds due to a certain felon we’re all familiar with.

    • The only problem I have with this is the relatively young pitching staff we’ve got:
Harvey, Niese, Gee and hopefully Wheeler.
Would really like to see a catcher with good defense and the intuitive ability to call a good game.

  • I wouldn’t mind Olivo instead of bringing back Shoppach if Sandy can bring him in on the cheap for just 1 year- 1.5MM or 2MM. He’s known as a pretty good defensive catcher and plays with a fiery attitude and edge which might rub off some on his soft teammates.

  • Hes better than Mike N who couldn’t hit the ground if he tripped. The team needs some pop.

  • Looks like I’m taking a year off from Mets baseball.

  • Isn’t he the catcher that got into it with Reyes when the Marlins nocked the Mets out of the Post Season on the last day in 2007 I think?

    • Yup !

  • It seems like these days the Mets are desperate for anything cheap…heap power, just add that one to the list…As Rodney Dangerfield would say The Mets are cheap….Did I also mention they like things cheap?

  • Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

  • Mets fans, remember who is writing the story Joel Sherman, a ny writer who is a yankees fan, always creating controversial articles in detriment of the NYM. 1st. of all and i am not defending the owners or the Front office, but the signing of Olivo goes against the OBP policy of sibermetrics, always read between the line when Joel is writing about the Mets, Melkis Cabrera signing, 143 millions to Wright etc.

  • Once again, certain people are treating a writer’s speculation as gospel. this is what I keep saying about predetermined narratives.

While I’m sure Olivo’s name has been mentioned, I doubt anyone who is part of the decision making process is yelling “that’s out guy”.

I was asking about him 3 years ago, but his window has closed.

    • Hasn’t there been a rumor about him and Hernadez about every 5 minutes and neither has played for us yet.
