What I worry about here is the Wilpons may actually be dumb enough to overpay Wright and Dickey in an effort to try and retain what few fans are left and still attending games. This would be completely contrary to what SA, JP and Paulie D are trying to do here, and a huge mistake. This could, and would negatively affect the team's ability to spend on the right players when the right time comes. Yes, another mistake of the past.

If Wright's agent tries to hold them over a barrel and uses Wright's enormous popularity, and/or the impact losing him could have on the fan base as a bargaining chip, it may be time to move on.

OMG Alan.....your comment is one of the very few intelligient ones I read here. Its so great to see that the many years of Mets futility didn't affect your mind like it did so many others. The pent up anger and frustrations resulting from the clueless owners and incompetent FO throught the years has left toast of most of the minds of the commentators here.

So many "Doubting Thomas's" here or are they just Met bashing? This year's Wright/Dickey situation is nothing like the Reyes one.

Part of a GM's job is to look at his team and honestly assess how good they are and what it will take to be legitimate contenders. Obviously, Sandy Alderson knew there would not be money to do anything major in the free agent market after the 2011 season.

That meant going to spring training in 2012 with question marks at first base, second base, behind the plate, 2 outfield spots, and both the starting and bullpen staff. Not much to be positive about! Some of those questions marks were answered and are now part of the future, some still need to be addressed. The direction of this team is to have a strong starting staff and based on the 2012 season, we are well on the way Zack Wheeler, when ready is the last piece of a very good staff

While we all loved Jose Reyes' for his skills and excitement.....he was not going to make the team a contender and spending 100 plus million on a guy with a history of major injury did not make sense. Then there was Ruben Tejada waiting in the wings! There was no sense of getting involved in the bidding war that was going to happen,

Face it people....player loyalty for the most part doesn't exist anymore and especially in places that have media frenzy. If Albert Pujols could leave St,Louis, anything is possible. At some point, GM's have to weigh the risk factor with contracts that strangle an organization. The Cardinal's are back in the playoffs and the money saved on Pujols was there in part to sign Beltran for a couple of years but more so to be there down the road to resign their core players when they approach Free Agency.

Wright and Dickey will get good initial offers but if the offers are way below their demands then Sandy will go to the winter meetings and look to trade them. There is no sense in making either side of these negotiations the bad guys.

I might suggest that all you bashers call your lawyers because obviously your partners, Fred and Jeff are not allowing you to make decisions on spending their money.

BTW.. I wish they would sell too but for so many other reasons!

I will hold off on saying there is an honest attempt at extending the two of them until I see what they are offerring....

We already have a team source saying 100MIl and Met for life...

Sorry but thats not an honest offer and if they refuse to come up with more money it's not an HONEST attempt IMO.

Wright and Dickey should hire guys who are good at negotiating deals and working with the media to push their own stories. Like some sort of...agent...or something.

A person who gets paid lots of money to handle situations like this and has friends among the writers.

This is going to be worse than last offseason, and the worst part is we will lose both and that once again none of their combined $21 million will be reinvested. Sandy is going to get a letter of commendation from Fred and Bud and his own wing in the executives section at Cooperstown when this is all over.

When this charade is all over I can just imagine the acrimonious goodbyes Wright will get much like Reyes. It's too bad both these former cornerstone players will both go out the same way in a volley of boos, sneers and jeers. That's the sad thing about all of this. Alderson will get praised while the two best position players we ever produced will get railed against. I miss the good old days.

The sooner the Mets get this done, the sooner they can focus their attention to acquiring outfielders and a catcher. Last thing we need is for the David Wright & RA Dickey trade rumors to surface up in Spring Training.

I still say it's all a smokescreen and everyday they leak these rumors to put the onus on the players and set them for being the bad guy. Last year they should have played it this was, made Reyes a real offer, and avoided all the flack. Dickey and Wright are being setup to be the bad guys, unlike last year where Alderson made himself look like the bad guy. Alderson learned from last year's mistake. This time he will give them each an offer they CAN refuse and his conscience will be cleared when he trades both of them, and the fans will say at least he tried because they are gullible as you can get.
