I recall, when bringing Alderson into the mix, that the intent was to create a culture within the organization. It’s been difficult defending some of the idiocy that has occurred in Flushing in recent years from all of the trash talkers. His numbers and make-up (pre-steroid) are not hard to come by. Captain Kirk seems to be a similar player, numbers-wise, plus he’s homegrown and doesn’t come with the baggage of a steroid scandal. As a fan, I can accept that a rebuilding period will likely mean no championships for the next couple of seasons while the organization finds its way. At least put players on the field that we can feel good about cheering for. This team has a long history of character issues. It’s not an element The Mets can afford to bring in at this point, when fans are already scattering.

trying to hide it was the stupidest part of the whole deal. if you just man up and say you made a bad decision, and will accept the penalty, you can move on from it. But pulling that stunt makes it much harder to come back from.

maybe it really was one of his agent’s people and Melky did not know about it, but still, he is tainted.

I agree that a 1 year with option deal for Cabrera makes sense. I would think you could put it to him with an incentive laden deal with an option that kicks in automatically at an escalated salary in 2014 if he reaches the incentive plateaus such as All Star selection, games played, etc. I believe the current CBA prohibits true incentives such as 200 hits or 30 SBs.

Anyway, get creative. I’ve never heard of a multi-year option, but why not put something on the table to the effect you have a one year guaranteed contract for a low figure such as $2.5 million. You can earn an addtional $24 million over the next three years if we exercise the option, otherwise you get a buyout of, say, $500K. To Cabrera, it’s a guaranteed $3 million no matter what, plus potentially $8 million per year thereafter if the Mets take the option. If he performs, they’ve locked in a player at a reasonable price. If he doesn’t then they’ve paid Andres Torres type money for someone from San Francisco who can actually hit.

I know I’m going to be in the minority here, but I like the idea. Yes, he’s a liar and a cheater, but he’s going to help the Mets win. He was having arugably the best offensive season in the league last year before the suspension. He plays a position we despratley need to improve, and crushed lefties last year to almost a .400 average.

Other players that will also improve our OF will cost us either a boatload of money that we don’t have, or a bunch of our talented prospects that we woudn’t want to give up. Melkey wouldn’t cost us either.

I also don’t believe that his last two years were based soley on luck or steriods. I think his spike in his performance had more to do with a young talented player entering the prime of his career than anything else – He was 26 in his breakout year in KC.

Steriods only enhance your performance, they don’t make you a great player. There are tons of minor leaguers that have taken steriods, yet they are still just minor leaguers. If you don’t have the talent to begin with, then they aren’t going to make you hit .346.

Someone like Gomes is exactly the kind of player I would expect to be on the Mets radar. He’s cheap, bats right handed and he has some power. My only concern is his range which would come into play at Citi Field.

He’s always had a pretty good defensive reputation, though certainly not elite. But those numbers that Connor pointed out seem reasonable enough and we can get that kind of production from other much cheaper options.

You can probably expect .265/.330/.380 with 7-8 HRs, 20-25 2Bs with very good range in the outfield
