First off why is everyone giving him 15 million per? I don't care what he throws. He should get 3 years @ 30 to 32 mil máx..he is a great guy Nice story with one ct young Type season ..he is also on the darkside of his thirties. I think 3 and 36 mil should be the máx and Its more than fair.. This is a guy who until his current deal never ever made over a million in his career. He was grateful when he got his current deal. Lets hope he is grateful once again. We did get him off a scrap heap..No offense to R.A. but where was his career before the Mets gave him an opportunity? I rest my case..NEXT!

>>>Centeno has never had more then 300 at bats in a season because he is a back up

Really?

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/team.cgi?id=4a7b5ec6

Juan Centeno got 79 Starts at Catcher last year
Francisco Pena the next catcher...had 29....

But Centeno is a backup?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and yes...after hitting .371...he proved he could handle Brooklyn pitching...he was PROMOTED...

the next year...he hits .318...

where again...he starts the majority of the games...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you still think a catcher is where you can just put a good offensive player, i might want to introduce you to the rest of the league...poor defensive catchers dont stick around...they are either moved off that position or to the bench...

Brook Forsythe - relegated to the bench
Francisco Pena - relegated to the bench
Cam Maron - moved to DH
Kevin P - already said to have issues with handling pitchers
Juan Centeno - the best of the lot

Juan Centeno >>> any other met catcher in the system

Centeno has never had more then 300 at bats in a season because he is a back up. They have no faith in his ability to become a full time player.

You once pointed out that he hit .370 in Brooklyn....you didn't mention he only had less then 90 at bats doing it.

He's hit 4....just 4 hrs in his entire pro career.

He slugged .342 last season, that's just horrible.

We all want Thole gone because his hitting is horrible, but yet Thole did much better over more at bats then Centeno ever has in the minors. The Mets need offense, not an even weaker version of Thole at the plate. Yes, he can catch, but he's such a physically weak hitter abs so small in stature that he'd never hold up for 130 games ever year. That's why he only backs up.

Pawlecki, Maron, Nido all have much higher ceilings and none of them are better at the plate then Sanchez.

Last season in 400 at bats Sanchez hit 18 hrs and had an ops over .800. If you really wouldn't take Sanchez in the system over Centeno then you have no idea what a high ceiling top prospect is. Every GM in the entire game would call you crazy. There isn't a baseball mind in the world who would side with you. It's not even close.

hitting is NOT a defensive position...

Here is a scout's outlook on him

Gary Sanchez’s defensive progress

Receiving pitches has historically been an issue for Sanchez, and the statistics back that assertion up. In 2011, Sanchez allowed a whopping 26 passed balls in 60 games behind the plate, and there were rumors that he stopped calling breaking pitches because he had difficulty blocking them, and did not want to inflate the passed ball total any further

Centeno is heads and shoulders above him as a catcher...

and 5th best met catching prospect?

lmao

yeah ok

im done humiliating folks on this site with that debate...

over the past 3 years Centeno has posted better offensive and defensive numbers than ANY met catcher in the entire system

The most I can get from anyone is that he's 5'7 and is too short to be a catcher

His $5MM for 2013 contract means that more teams should be in play. Also, remember contender has been redefined by the second wild card. Basically if you're playing .500 ball come September, then you have a shot at making the playoffs. That also makes a lot more teams "contenders". So all it takes is a team to see the upgrade Dickey would bring to their pitching staff to pull the trigger.

I think the trade question can only really be answered if we know what Dickey can bring back. Like what if Kansas City comes from out of nowhere and offers OF prospect Myers, or the Cards give up OF prospect Taveras, or everyone's dream d'Arnaud from the Jays?? The better the prospects and/or package the easier it is to stomach trading Dickey.

That said, I love the guy. He has been an ace and our best and most consistent pitcher these last few years. Even so, his age worries me. That money he deserves worry me because I don't see how it fits into our payroll. And I'm of the belief that if he can land a really great prospect or package, I'd trade him.

because if you are a good team and consider yourself a viable playoff contender, but are weak at SP, it is a chance to get a Cy young guy, with a very affordable contract. And age a non-factor, since you are not inheriting a lousy LT deal.

Supposedly Sanchez is terrible at defense...same with Jesus Montero....who is a DH with Seattle

I love everything about this guy, so I want him to stay...I say 2 years at 13mil plus incentives and an option or two...I'm not worried about the velocity or breakdown with him so age isn't a concern.

I love the fact that he's a no BS type of guy and calls it as he see's it...great for leadership on the team, but the FO might not like it.

I will say that if all the moneyball stuff says that OBP is important, then should a guy who has a very low OBPA and very low BB rate be a very high priority?

I agree with trying a 3 yr with perhaps a vesting option but I am not opposed to trading him. I just preffer to keep him. I know we keep saying trade him with his value at the highest but these other teams are also aware of his age and the fact that he throws this pitch at a high velocity so why would they give up a King's ransom for him?

Sign him through 2015, and cap his warnings at 26 million for the 2014 & 2015 season. This is a guy who made the minimum for his entire career until the Mets made him a millionaire. I think him riding off into the sunset making 31 million over the next 3 yrs is great. I'd give him a 3rd year option for 2016 if he pitches over 400 innings between 2014 & 2015 but only at 7 million.

So, he everything vests, he's make 38 million over the next four yrs. I think that is more than fair for boths sides. It protects everyone and he can remain loyal to the team that gave him his big break. The Mets can return the favor.

If he doesn't take that deal, than its curtains for Dickey. Trade trade trade and do it before the season while the Yankees are looking for starting pitching to replace the possible departures of Petitte and Kuruda. I wouldn't mind Sandy prying their top catching prospect Gary Sanchez away. He'd be a great guy player for the Mets at a position in dire need. He is, however, a year or two away.

a 4 year 45 year contract makes Dickey 44 years old when it ends...

not the worst thing in the world.

if u include the option year...its really a 5 year 50 mil contract...an avg of 10 mil per year.....

I would NOT include a NTC...

What i want is flexibility....if Dickey under a sensible contract means he is a tradable asset...then i would sign him...

This is the difference b/w Dickey and Wright...

There is no way Wright is signing a contract here that makes sense for both sides...we just have to come to grips with that...

If Wright has the following in his criteria:

Winning: We are crap out of luck
Top Dollar: We are crap out of luck
Supportive Owners: We are crap out of luck

Wright can get all 3 of those somewhere else

Doesn't this have to be a 2 part scenario? With part 1 being re-sign Wright, since RA has gone on record saying he is making them a package deal?

My answer is still, looking at the roster, is to try and convert RA into a couple of players that can fill holes. Never know what a GM will pony up (until you ask!) and many teams will salivate over getting a 1 year shot for cheap $$ at a Cy Young candidate. Or at least they should!

I would try to trade him (and Wright). How else will the Mets become a better team? I would try to find a team and I would give that team 3 days to extent Dickey. That way I think you can get a better deal. You also give the receiving team the chance to make the deal they think Dickey is worth. The same strategy should be done with Wright. Both should net a lot this way. 2 top prospects each at least.
