"This will be resolved shortly". David is worth more at the start of ST to a new team. As for the Mets they have to know who they get to fill needs and their payroll. Before Thanksgiving this will be done one way or the other. But SA if he keeps Wright will be a puppet of the Wilpons. As a moneyball guy he knows better thant to sign a 30 year old (in Dec) to a 120 M six year or worse yet a 140 M seven year deal. But PR probably will dictate that DW is another homegrown allstar on a losing team for his career. Both the Mets and DW are better off going thei separate ways. Now on a bonefide 140 M payroll without albatrose contracts,(see Note) DW would be great to retain and would be an important cog in a championship run.

Note add 40 M-50 M so 190 M payroll with byouts if buy both Santana and Bayout.

Why do most fans think the signing of a player is solely a team decision. Its like everyone just forgets the player has something to say about this. In the case of David Wright this is how I see the drama unfolding: Alderson and Mets owners know the franchise cannot take the PR hit with Wright leaving. A lucrative, fair market value contract is offered to keep him through out his career. Wright balks at it and first wants to know what else the FO is going to do to improve the team, as he stands by his word that a chance to win is more important than money. At this time the FO will probably tell all kinds of lies just to keep him. Wright will be smart enough to see through the bulls**t, but still wants to be a life long Met. At this poing his agent asks for an out clause in the contract 2 or 3 years in, allowing Wright to monitor the progress of the team and be a free agent again if the FO fails to produce a winner. Honestly, this is what I would shoot for if I was Wright.

I agree Mitch which is why I say regardless of Sandy's approach to team building the Wilpons will push him to get something done with Wright. The question will be is there enough money left to keep Dickey as well which is probably not going to be the case.

If they thought Citifield was empty this year just wait to see how empty it will be if he's traded in the offseason.

I don't think the MLB or the Mets can afford if the Mets don't resign Wright. They cannot afford to lose out on the revenue stream the Mets fans provide. There has to be some sort of star players on the Mets so the fans keep watching, and keep coming back. Take David off the Mets, and not only will attendance be at an all-time low, but people will be less likely to watch on TV. If people aren't watching on TV, how can SNY sell advertising?

How there can be a team in a Large Market, with no players to market? It makes no sense. This isn't Tampa Bay, or Toronto where no matter who is on the team, there will be empty seats. This is NY.

If you are reading this Sandy...Resign David and start spending some flippin' money and stop acting like this is some BS small market team. You have to spend money to make money. Oakland may have shocked the world this year by winning the AL West, but that happens about as often as Haley's Comet flies through. This small market mentality in a very, very big market has to stop. I'm not happy Oakland won....wanna know why??? Because it will validate Alderson's philosophy as he points out what Oakland did to support all this crap.

Two things going to be at play here....

#1 and top of the list is how much the 'HATED WILPONS" wish to endure if he leaves. My guess is they have enough PR problems already they will not allow Sandy to cause another one even if it means taking a cab instead of a Helicopter to a heat game!

And #2 and something not really much under team control is how convincing can Sandy be when he tries and tells Wright that there is a playoff in his future?
He is now on record saying 3 years away from even being a Normal Spending tream again. Thats not going to sit well with a guy entering his mid-prime and looking for a ring before he retires.

I personally don't think Sandy wants Wright back but the Wilpons do.
The questuion of that was his last game will really depend on how Sandy decides to sell Wright on staying and that he doesnt't just screw the pooch in a way that he can claim to the Wilpons and fans that he actually tried (without trying) and trying to blame it on Greed the way he did when it was Reyes that was the priority!

Whatever we believe we do know that David said he will not negotiate during 2013 season so deal has to be done before, this is a no brainer for Wilpons and SA but stranger things have happened.
Hopefully with a better team around him next year and 2014 he will be a better player and have the chance to go into HOF as a Met; you can dream can't you! :)

Yes, despite the Sandy talk Wright will be gone by Christmas. Reyes was handled so badly that Sandy won't want David playing out his option year. After the success of the Oakland A"s Sandy will be emboldened to clear house and get super cheap.

Boston has lots of salary room and a sense of pride. I'm looking for the Mets to make a block buster deal with Boston. Wright, Dickey, Bay, and Davis go to Bean Town....Sandy and the bean counters will be fawning over the boys from the Pawtucket Red Sox and their low expenses.

Let's see since last off season the talks were the Mets were trading Wright at the Winter Meetings and then he was going to be traded by the time Winter ended and then he was going to be traded by the trade deadline. I am glad to see at least for now that he is still here. If I had to guess I'd say they will extend him and he will be a part of the Mets come Opening Day but then again I also felt that they would resign Reyes last year.

Oh well, let the Wright watch begi... I mean continue. ;-)

I don't think this was David's last game - I think that will come sometime before the trading deadline.

Fonzie makes the correct point that the Wilpons can't afford the P.R. hit, however, we have to remember that it is Sandy in charge and he is looking beyond the public relations hit but to the ledger book and has already told us this means looking ahead to 2014 and 2015 as financials. As we saw the past two years, he looked at reducing costs more than increasing revenue. Why, I do not know but I suspect there is more to it than can meet the eye.
