Have We Seen David Wright’s Final Game In A Mets Uniform?
Until something gets done, the David Wright situation will to be the central theme on Mets blogs everywhere for this entire offseason. I wanted to get things started by asking our staff the following most important question for the Mets moving forward.
Have we seen David Wright’s final game in a Mets uniform?
Mitch: No. The reason why the Mets won’t be spending much in free agency is so they can bring both David and Dickey back. If a deal isn’t done this winter, it will be a major distraction in 2013, as everyone speculates about what the plans will be. I do believe David will be back, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be surprised if he were traded mid-season in ’13. In fact, if a deal isn’t done his winter, I think there is a very good chance he gets traded.
Nick: No, no matter how people feel about the Wilpons and their lack of money and/or intelligence they understand David Wright is the New York Mets. He resembles to the fans everything Mets and is the face of the franchise and needs to be until he retires and into the foreseeable future.
Michael: No. I think Sandy has realized that this team can’t function without Wright or make any money, seeing as he is the only player the fans really pay to see play every day.
Gregg: I believe David Wright will be a Met for his entire career (of course I thought the Mets would have signed Jose Reyes). I think David wants to sign with Mets, it’s up to the Mets to make a credible offer. I also think if the Mets fail to re-sign Wright, 2014 will resemble 1977 at Citi Field.
Jim: Absolutely not. The guys wants to be here (surprisingly) and wants to be a part of the team that finally brings a championship back to Queens, whether that be next year, five years from now or 10-plus years from now. He’s now also the all-time leader in hits for the franchise. Ownership will somehow work out a deal for him for something like five years, $100 million. With Bay and Santana coming of the books in 2014, this will hopefully be a manageable contract.
Clare: After listening to David, it sure sounds like he wants to be a Met for his whole career. The Mets need to find a way to sign Wright long term. He is the face of our franchise and the fans are already dismayed with ownership. If Wright is allowed to walk like Reyes did, everyone better watch out! The fan reaction would be explosive to say the least
Jessep: No, because I do hope that the major financial issues of this franchise are behind them. Look, the bottom line is – if Wright is not retained past 2013, it tells you just how bad things really are. If he is signed, it gives hope that 2010 and 2011 are things of the past and yes there were some casualties from a terrible situation, but they are moving on.
Elliot: No, I’ve always felt that Wright, the Mets and New York had a different relationship than Reyes, the Mets and New York. The Mets know they need him for multiple reasons, and they’ll retain him beyond 2013. This could also be optimism blocking my sense of reason.
Fonzie13: No! David Wright will be extended over the winter. The Wilpons can’t afford the PR hit. Even they realize how important he is to the fanbase.
Satish: I think after the hit record, it would be an embarrassment to the franchise not to keep him. I think he will be around.
Rob Tie Dyed: This is a sad thought but a very real possibility. Sadly, I fear it will be. As David is in the midst of his most productive years, he needs to cash in. And to get to a team that actually wants to win, not just acts like it. Thanks for everything, David… See you in 20 years at Oldtimers Day. And go get that World Series ring. Ain’t happenin’ here any time soon.
XtreemIcon: No. His option will be picked up and the Mets will try to re-sign all the way up until he signs with another team. Coming to terms on money is an entirely different question.
Have the events and comments by Sandy Alderson in the last 24 hours given you more hope that a deal with David Wright will get done? Or did it only add to the uncertainty of the situation? Tell us your thoughts.

I’m with the majority opinion here. Looking forward to the day when he is inducted into the HOF as a NY Met!
Seems like a consensus.
No, I don’t believe we’ve seen the last of Wright in a Met uniform.
I think something to keep in mind is the impact that the AS Game may have on the situation. Are they more likely to extend him and keep him at least until after the break?
Sometimes GOD answers our prayers……
Wow, LOL. Obsession.
Now… what i exactly did i mean by that according to you??? are you assuming stuff TRS?
I think before this we want to know who won the contest Joe.
Glad you inked to that Reyes article.
“I think one of the disappointments for me was we started poorly and we ended poorly,” Alderson said. “First impressions are important. Last impressions are important. I think we did a lot of good things between those two bookends, but I think the poor start and the difficult finish may obscure some of that.”
He said that last year, and this year he mocked the Mets first half and said he was happy they collapsed in second half. Alderson is out of his mind. He’s too old. Even Moses didnt lead the Hebrews into the promised land, the much younger Joshua did that.

I don’t think this was David’s last game – I think that will come sometime before the trading deadline.
Fonzie makes the correct point that the Wilpons can’t afford the P.R. hit, however, we have to remember that it is Sandy in charge and he is looking beyond the public relations hit but to the ledger book and has already told us this means looking ahead to 2014 and 2015 as financials. As we saw the past two years, he looked at reducing costs more than increasing revenue. Why, I do not know but I suspect there is more to it than can meet the eye.
“This will be resolved shortly”. David is worth more at the start of ST to a new team. As for the Mets they have to know who they get to fill needs and their payroll. Before Thanksgiving this will be done one way or the other. But SA if he keeps Wright will be a puppet of the Wilpons. As a moneyball guy he knows better thant to sign a 30 year old (in Dec) to a 120 M six year or worse yet a 140 M seven year deal. But PR probably will dictate that DW is another homegrown allstar on a losing team for his career. Both the Mets and DW are better off going thei separate ways. Now on a bonefide 140 M payroll without albatrose contracts,(see Note) DW would be great to retain and would be an important cog in a championship run.
Note add 40 M-50 M so 190 M payroll with byouts if buy both Santana and Bayout.
Let’s see since last off season the talks were the Mets were trading Wright at the Winter Meetings and then he was going to be traded by the time Winter ended and then he was going to be traded by the trade deadline. I am glad to see at least for now that he is still here. If I had to guess I’d say they will extend him and he will be a part of the Mets come Opening Day but then again I also felt that they would resign Reyes last year.
Oh well, let the Wright watch begi… I mean continue.
Yes, despite the Sandy talk Wright will be gone by Christmas. Reyes was handled so badly that Sandy won’t want David playing out his option year. After the success of the Oakland A”s Sandy will be emboldened to clear house and get super cheap.
Boston has lots of salary room and a sense of pride. I’m looking for the Mets to make a block buster deal with Boston. Wright, Dickey, Bay, and Davis go to Bean Town….Sandy and the bean counters will be fawning over the boys from the Pawtucket Red Sox and their low expenses.
Whatever we believe we do know that David said he will not negotiate during 2013 season so deal has to be done before, this is a no brainer for Wilpons and SA but stranger things have happened.
Hopefully with a better team around him next year and 2014 he will be a better player and have the chance to go into HOF as a Met; you can dream can’t you!
Two things going to be at play here….
#1 and top of the list is how much the ‘HATED WILPONS” wish to endure if he leaves. My guess is they have enough PR problems already they will not allow Sandy to cause another one even if it means taking a cab instead of a Helicopter to a heat game!
And #2 and something not really much under team control is how convincing can Sandy be when he tries and tells Wright that there is a playoff in his future?
He is now on record saying 3 years away from even being a Normal Spending tream again. Thats not going to sit well with a guy entering his mid-prime and looking for a ring before he retires.
I personally don’t think Sandy wants Wright back but the Wilpons do.
The questuion of that was his last game will really depend on how Sandy decides to sell Wright on staying and that he doesnt’t just screw the pooch in a way that he can claim to the Wilpons and fans that he actually tried (without trying) and trying to blame it on Greed the way he did when it was Reyes that was the priority!
No way! Sandy himself said that he’s picking up the options on David and RA Dickey and that any contract extensions that are worked out between the team and these players would kick in starting in 2014.
He also said that if the Option is all he could get from them and no extention was made that he would have to consider trading them to get something from them.
I don’t think the MLB or the Mets can afford if the Mets don’t resign Wright. They cannot afford to lose out on the revenue stream the Mets fans provide. There has to be some sort of star players on the Mets so the fans keep watching, and keep coming back. Take David off the Mets, and not only will attendance be at an all-time low, but people will be less likely to watch on TV. If people aren’t watching on TV, how can SNY sell advertising?
How there can be a team in a Large Market, with no players to market? It makes no sense. This isn’t Tampa Bay, or Toronto where no matter who is on the team, there will be empty seats. This is NY.
If you are reading this Sandy…Resign David and start spending some flippin’ money and stop acting like this is some BS small market team. You have to spend money to make money. Oakland may have shocked the world this year by winning the AL West, but that happens about as often as Haley’s Comet flies through. This small market mentality in a very, very big market has to stop. I’m not happy Oakland won….wanna know why??? Because it will validate Alderson’s philosophy as he points out what Oakland did to support all this crap.
Mitch, didn’t you pay attentions to Collins and Alderson yesterday? We have budding stars and core players in Lucas Duda and Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Where’s your head at? And dont forget we have Daniel Murphy at second base.
I forgot about that…I could totally see Duda’s face on a billboard in Times Square.
I know what they say in public, but behind close doors they have to be saying “man we really suck, do you think they bought it?”
I know what they say in public, but behind close doors they have to be saying “man we really suck, do you think they bought it?”
THIS!!!
Young teams suprise baseball every few years. Those A’s are set to dominate for a few years. At least until their players are eligable for free agency.
I agree Mitch which is why I say regardless of Sandy’s approach to team building the Wilpons will push him to get something done with Wright. The question will be is there enough money left to keep Dickey as well which is probably not going to be the case.
If they thought Citifield was empty this year just wait to see how empty it will be if he’s traded in the offseason.
He will be back. My opinion is David will sign a contract kinda like Griffey jr,did with Cincy. Something in the 9 years 112 million range. Guaranteeing he retires a Met and moves Wright to spokeperson for the team,as they build a statue out front of him.
Why do most fans think the signing of a player is solely a team decision. Its like everyone just forgets the player has something to say about this. In the case of David Wright this is how I see the drama unfolding: Alderson and Mets owners know the franchise cannot take the PR hit with Wright leaving. A lucrative, fair market value contract is offered to keep him through out his career. Wright balks at it and first wants to know what else the FO is going to do to improve the team, as he stands by his word that a chance to win is more important than money. At this time the FO will probably tell all kinds of lies just to keep him. Wright will be smart enough to see through the bulls**t, but still wants to be a life long Met. At this poing his agent asks for an out clause in the contract 2 or 3 years in, allowing Wright to monitor the progress of the team and be a free agent again if the FO fails to produce a winner. Honestly, this is what I would shoot for if I was Wright.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! CAN’T…..GO…..ON……
