If the Pitcher is throwing a ball the batter doesn’t have to do a thing!

Doesn’t need to decide a damn thing!

It all starts with what the pitcher throws.

A batter can’t walk unless the Pitcher throws him 4 balls. No matter how well the batter decides, he can’t FORCE a pitcher to throw Ball 4.

Sure…the batter in a fraction of a second has to decide if the ball the pitcher is throwing is going to be in the strike zone or out of the strike zone…

and thats THE FIRST PART

the 2nd part is deciding if it is a borderline pitch, is it worth swinging at ?…can he still make contact if he does swing…can he foul it off….

if it is in the strike zone…what is he trying to do with the ball…does he have a runner on 2nd with no outs that he is trying to push the ball to 2b with….

does he have a runner on 3rd with 1 out and a tie game in the 8th?

or is it a blowout and he cant afford to give away outs…

situational hitting affects decision-making and swing

there are about 101 things that a batter has to calculate…BEFORE the pitcher even gets into the windup…

deciding to not sign Jose Reyes was a decision that has long term ramifications and because there isnt a SS in our system with Reyes’s range, not signing him has a domino effect on 2B and 1B and a spill-over effect on our SP

Having Reyes at SS allows you to upgrade 2B defensively by leaps and bounds for the next 6 years…

Having Reyes at SS also allows you to either:

1- keep Wright and trade Murphy
2 – move Murphy to 3B and keep Wright
3 – keep Wright, move Murphy to 1B and trade Ike

Either way, when SS and 2B are locked down and solid…you have alot more options…

In terms of the lineup…we have absolutely no one in our entire organization that can match Reyes as a leadoff hitter

our best hope is Jordany Valdespin…

that is the shortsightedness there.

the FO has not done anything horrific. The first job was to stablize team finances, and lower payroll to a supportable level. Not Sandy’s idea or desire, just reality.

after that, everything has been ST deals while the dust settles. nothing that will have LT negative ramifications to the team. They have not traded the few promising prospects, and have not panicked and overpaid a falling apart guy to a contract that will lck up payroll for years.
