That was exactly my point. This budget crunch means the only budget you can find is trading Wright. I’d move Dickey too. That $21MM should be able to upgrade the OF. The prospects netted will be a boon to a system that has only ONE hitter somewhat close to the MLB. Two OF also means Krik and maybe even ‘Spin get more AAA at-bats.

I think Thole is a Yup. they have no one in the system to replace him, already need a 2nd catcher, and the pickings are damned slim.

1 more year at that money is a given, and if he does not step it up 2013 will likely be it.

and it makes zero sense to trade Ike and Neise while also signing Wright and Dickey.

This budget crunch means something’s got to give. If we’re staying at $100MM payroll then it’s hard to see any upgrades coming in the free agent market. If we’re going to trade, it means Niese or Ike will be gone come April 2013.

Thole was “worth” only $600,000 in 2012 (down from $4,100,000 the year before!). He looked awful at the plate and his catching fundamentals could be better. Dickey likes throwing to him though, so he might be worth keeping.

If by chance we go out and get another catcher, I can see Thole getting non-tendered. That is a lot of money for a non hitter like Thole.
