Yep it's always a risk even if they aren't great that you will get less than you gave when all is said and done.

I just think that when you look at our rotation while guys like mejia and familia might have the potential to be great pitchers in the MLB will they ever break into our rotation and get the opportunity to show it?

And if not it's just a wasted commodity then.
Even if you had the best tasting apples money could buy you don't get the benefit from them if you never eat them.
And in time they will just rot and be worthless.

I do support them continuing to develop both Mejia and Familia as starters while they are here.
And if a trade of a guy like Mejia (if he has that promise surely someone else sees it as well) when added to a McHugh (who will not be a major rotation guy here but could break in someplace like Colorado), then thats an enticing package to get an everyday OFer or catcher (assuming they have those things and matchup well)

And take that risk that they may get more from them than you could but at least you got something you didn't have and needed.

It all comes down to finding the right matchup and trade partner.
Find a team who is weak on pitching but strong on OF or catcher and you have the team to make a deal with.

Agreed metsie...beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Even then, How much can a McHugh and others like him even when packaged together, really be expected to fetch? Guys like Mejia and Familia will bring stronger returns, but are risky to deal...what will we all say if Mejia develops a change up and forkball or Familia harnesses his control and improves his secondary pitches? We'll be screaming we traded Justin Turner and Jenrry Mejia to Colorado for whom? You know what I mean...the better the talent you trade the higher the risk you get burned...

Regardless of what he actually is in the league to US he is at best a 4A or maybe even 6A pitcher.

It is doubtful he can break into a rotation here with the likes of:
Dickey
Harvey
Niese
Wheeler and Gee

But he might have no problem breaking into a rotation in Colorado!
Which makes him more valuable to someone else than he is to us!

And one of the few things Sandy said last night that actually made some sense was to evaluate players based on who was more valuable to someone else than they are to us!

McHugh would seem to fit those parameters perfectly! As would Duda. There are others in the Minors that fit as well.

Mejia and Familia will probably never start for us and be relegated to the pen, But someplace else they could be 3rd 4th and 5th starters because they don't have the guys we have holding them back there.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, Well value is in the eye of the guy who is weak where your strong!

And if Sandy recognizes this and makes some moves based on that approach we find find guys like McHugh are worth something we need!

Thanks metsie and alex for leaping to my defense. However harsh xtreem seemed to be with my assessment of McHugh, or how harsh my comment was it doesn't bother me or change my opinion of him as a pitcher... A 4A journeyman type, who is 25 and a borderline mlb pitcher. He gave me no tangible reason to alter my opinion...and I believe my assessment will prove correct.

You were not too harsh just being realistic and looking at the difference from a McHugh to a Harvey!

Don't let the Sandy Bullies get to you!
They will all be gone in a year and become Oakland fans because you know Selig was smart to add a wildcard spot and that makes Beane a genius and validate the trade of Gio Gonzales!

Mike, it's your opinion and everyone should respect it whether they like it or not, not sure why xtreeme called you out, let me say this for you: Mchugh looks like a miguel batista type pitcher. i don't care if he's 25 or 15.. the kid came in and had a nice start, good for him, he quickly got figure out and does not show me nor anyone anything that makes you wonder he'd be a top notch caliber pitcher. some people in here pick certain people to bully them into saying whatever they wanted to say not what they wanted to listen to, typical mets fans. I admire you for your patient and not telling xtreem to go FU** himself. But of course, had that been me i would've been called out but since it was him he gets a pass.

Perhaps I was a bit harsh in my assessment...perhaps not...Niese was a bit better early on than McHugh. He was lefthanded, had that 12 to 6 curve that was a plus pitch and had developed the cutter.
McHugh on the other hand is a righty with average stuff, no real plus pitches. Satish points out below, McHugh's age which I believe works against him as well...Not trying to discount the kid, just don't see anything more than that...I've been wrong before, just what I see and my opinion, do you see a higher ceiling than a possible # 5 starter or maybe middle or long guy than that? I just don't see much more than that...

I see a kid with enough starts to count on one hand that hasn't even had the league adjust to him, let alone seeing how he re-adjusts to that. I've been watching baseball a long time as well, and I don't pretend to be smart enough to look at roughly 20 innings of work and know the kind of career someone's going to have.
Tough one to watch tonight....McHugh....I hate saying it, but the kid just isin't more than a journeyman ala Hefner....I really just don't see it, the wonderful debut aside....
Congrats to DW, the Question is, Will he get many more than Eddie Kranepool did as a Met?
I agree with Stick about Francisco....Your committed to him next season, why keep trying to get him going and risk further complications in meaningless games for the vets?
The Carson thing just shows once again that you never know when a young guy with talent can just have a problem, and even if the MRI shows nothing, an injury like this could ruin his trade value or impact the front office planning for '13 and beyond....a shame....
I thought the Ramirez pitch to Barajas with the bases full was way outside, but the ump helped him there...
Hey Satish, you're allowed to say it, Alderson sucks the life out of the room in interviews....as he did with the clubhouse before the deadline....

just shut Franky down at this point and let him start healing.

and have to give Elvin credit. Rough start, but he stepped it up after the 1 run scored and got out of it, and even gave them a clean 2nd inning.
