I saw that Thronberry play on TV when it happened and have the CD of that game as well. You might remember in the top of the inning the Mets had a Cub player trapped in a rundown and he was called safe at second due to interference by Thronberry as well.

The ump isn’t close to the bag. He really screwed up. This is not a case of a parallax viewing error. It’s a case of blocked vision which was caused by the height of the bag. Torres left heel is at the front edge of the bag, closest to the pitching mound, away from the ump. Awful call.

He was a dozen feet or so away, with the base between Torres heel and Rackley’s point of vision. Since the base is three to five inches high (by official regulations), Rackley was blocked from seeing if Torres brushed against the base.

This is a case of a rookie ump trying to exceed his limitations and playing God. He ought to eat some humble pie and realize that he can’t see and know everything. If he can’t be certain, which is the case, he should have let the play stand.

All I could think of after the play was past similar Mets blunders from our outfielders. Specifically Church missing 3rd and more recent Pagan vs the Cardinals as well I believe throwing to an empty 1st base.

It would of been interesting to see what would have happened had the Ump made what to me would of been the right call and ruled Torres did tough the bag.

McHugh went up to a pretty good hitting Cardinals team and not surprisingly they was able to string some hits together and put some runs up vs him. Just learn from it and move on kid.

Harvey on the hill tomorrow as the Mets try to even the series.
