Reyes was not considered the best SS in the game those years. Maybe by people like you, but certainly not by the majority. And LOL at thinking Reyes was a superstar those years, but Wright wasn’t. That is laughable.

I am bummed I missed this hilarious post when it was first posted. I think Beltran was a great underappreciated Met…maybe the most underappeciated ever..but that statement about Beltran vs. Wright…argues against much of what you are trying to argue here lol.

Beltran in the middle of a GREAT lineup…at best has been the 3rd best hitter on his team this year (Holliday and Molina have definitely been better…and Freese and in limited time Craig might have been better too) has a line of:
.261/.333/.489/.822; 122 OPS+ and 2.7 WAR

I love Beltran and all, but those are not MVP numbers…he’s not even close to being the best player on his own team.

Wright on the other hand plays in a pretty terrible lineup, is clearly the best player on the team and has posted a line of :

.312/.402/.499/.901 149 OPS+ 6.5 WAR

Wright isn’t going to win the MVP either…but that is much closer to an MVP-type year than what Beltran has done

Lets see, 2012 no Delgado, no Beltran, no Reyes and Wright even with a bad 2nd half he’s hitting 313/403/501 904 OPS. 1st half he was 351/441/563 1004 OPS.

79 runs,79 RBI, 37 2B’s 17 HR’s
314/452/475 W/RISP
346/507/462 W 2 Out/RISP
328/476/391 Late and Close
High Lvg 363/455/516

That’s with a miserable 2nd half and his clutch numbers are even better than his regular numbers. This team had no shot at playing as well as they did in the first half without Wright. He carried the offense on his back.

Meanwhile Pagan hits 1 HR and 27 RBI’s combined for May June and July and people act like we traded away Willie Mays.

If you have the talent then why the need to stockpile?

I know it’s not about avoiding the debate as your having it in other threads (and started it in this one truth be told)

It’s about avoiding the question that you always avoid answering whenever it is asked!

Because you can only get about two or three names on that list from two years worth of GMing!

I am really not going to get into the daily debate today only to post that sometimes building talent is not only bringing talent in but not trading the talent you have in desperate attempts to be competitive in lost seasons. I am sure that will get you over the edge so have fun.

Well I don’t think it coincided with Francesa…

It more closely coincided with Harvey coming up.

Got the first win in his first start and if the coaches hadn’t messed with him and let him do what got him there instead of insisting on throwing the breaking ball he might have won one of the two games in between and the date on when the change started would be different!

And just like with an older house….if you’re taking it down to the studs and rebuilding from the ground up you’d better have plenty of patience and money. Those changes to bring everything up to code can get expensive and time consuming.

Man that’s a stretch. It’s like the clutch debate where a bad player suddenly turns it on in crunch time. Does that mean he purposefully tanks the rest of the time or is it that it’s a product of chance? A team is never as good as it’s high or never as bad as it’s low. Chances are this team is this team.

I know that some people will never see it this way, but there is a difference between looking at the big picture (talent in system, budget, and holes) and deciding to follow the plan of stepping back to build a better foundation to build on, and trading talent just to cut payroll.’

fine line sometimes of course, and you have to look at all the moves in total to really decide which way they went.

after last year was just stabilizing the payroll where they could support it. Going forward now, they really have the choice to make.

kind of like when you have an older house. You can remodel what is there, and hope it is good enough (even though building on a weaker base), or gut it down to the studs and build it up the way you want it to be.

It’s really not that crazy to think that Terry got thoroughly embarrassed by the public assault he received for apparently being beaten down to the point where he was just accepting of poor play.

While his mantra has been since he got here that he will not stand for that.

It’s also not crazy to think that he laid into the team or that the players picked things up to come to their coaches defense.
