Terry Collins told reporters that Matt Harvey’s final start of the season will be on September 18.
The rookie right-hander’s next start will come this Wednesday against the Nationals at Citi Field. It was initially going to be a marquis match-up between Stephen Strasburg and Harvey, but the Nationals decided on Friday that they would shut their phenom down for the rest of the season.
Harvey is 3-4 with a 3.04 ERA in eight starts for the Mets this season and in 47.2 innings he has walked 20 while striking out 53. He has pitched a career high 157 innings between Triple-A Buffalo and the Mets this season.
Terry Collins has said that Jenrry Mejia is tentatively scheduled to make his first start on September 19, effectively replacing Harvey’s spot in the rotation.
