I'm not compaing Wright to a future Hall Of Famer in Chipper but comparing the two by their teams accomplishments is totally unfair. You think Chipper is in the playoffs every year without Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz? Wright has never been on a team as talented as those Braves teams. Put Chipper in his prime on this Met team and the results won't be much different.

Me, insightful? As you might have seen, at late I've been called, a bullshit artist, a liar, one who makes claims that aren't backed up, one who infers speculation as fact, childish and been belittled in other more subtle, coyish ways.

It's simply pleasant to read a nice personal comment for a change. Thanks a lot.

Absolutely right, JD. I thought what you said as soon as I posted my comment. The '62 crew was out there giving it all they had, even through the buffoonery. And that is different from the '12 crew.

Remeber in the first half of the season when no leade seemed too insurmountable for these guys; there was something very "can-do" about the first half 2012 Mets. Now it's total quit.

I am really only concerned about Harvey and Dickey right now (I think Niese is solid.) Call me nuts, but for more than a week I became convinced that there really isn't a single indispensable position player in the clubhouse (maybe Ruben's the exception). I mean how many of us would really care if most of the position players were wearing different uniforms next year, to say nothing of the "coaching" staff!

Hi Lou,

I might be wrong with this but I think maybe Mantle got his $100,000 contract the same year that Mays got his. I remember a cartoon on the back of the Post which had a player holding two bats, with the names of each and the number $100,000 next to it.

Do you remember back in 1970 when Ron Swoboda said he was insulted at being offered $42,500? That would be the equivalent of $240,000 today. It was also about 40 percent of what Mantle and Mays got - and I know Rocky would even say he wasn't even two-fifths the player Mantle and Mays were. Just shows even in the days before free agency, there were some players who were ungrateful - considering the situation and mindset of the time.

Enjoyed your comments. I remember the big news as a kid when Mantle got 100,000 dollars from the Yanks and the news was a big deal. My dad made 60 dollars a week back then so I would think that 100,000 back then may be the same as a 10 million dollar contract today. I may be alittle high but 100 grand back then was lots and lots of money but many players back then only made 5 and 6 thousand a year.

If Wright left as a FA and found greener pastures elsewhere, NO PROBLEM! Why should he stay? The Wilpons don't have a clue! Neither does the Front Office! We don't need any more Alex Ochoas, Aaron Heilmans, Butch Huskeys, etc. What we need are players who don't give a rip and put numbers on the board! Wright, "the face of the franchise," is pleasant, speaks, and plays reasonably well but is NOT a leader who you can count on rallying the troops towards victory. David Wright and Chipper Jones may have similar numbers at the same point in their careers but Jones has contributed more to the overall team effort of the Braves. This includes 12 or more Division Championships, appearing in three WS, and winning one. Right now, David can only dream of those numbers! It just might be, given Wright's makeup, the expectations and pressures of New York are too much for him!

IT'S TIME FOR NEW OWNERSHIP, FRONT OFFICE PERSONNEL, TALENT EVALUATORS, AND PLAYERS WHO HAVE GUTS! THIS BLAND STYLE OF BALLPLAYERS WE KEEP GETTING IS TOO MUCH, ESPECIALLY FOR A MAJOR MARKET TEAM! THE METS SHOULD BE A TEAM THAT IS DESIRED FOR PLAYERS IN MLB, NOT AVOIDED!

SELL THE TEAM, FRED WILPON, AND STOP LIVING OUT YOUR BROOKLYN FANTASIES THROUGH THEM!!!

Hi Lou,

So, so, so true. Pride.

As mentioned before, this is what happens when even a 21 year old rookie makes $480,000. (BTW - I was incorrect that back in 1976, the equivalent $120,000 a yearwas more than the highest paid player made up to that time - Catfish Hunter, who was a free agent two years before the rest, made a then unheard of $165,000 a year).

Simplistic as it sounds, a little less financial security often brings out the best of all of us due it causing us to appreciate things more and not taking things for granted. Perhaps if some of these players recalled when that was the case for them - like a R.A. Dickey - we might see a different attitude inside the dugout right now.

The difference between this team and our 62 team was that the 62 team had a lot of good players at the end of their careers like Richie Ashburn, Frank Thomas, Clem Labine, Gil Hodges, Gus Bell and Gene Woodling to name a few of the notables. The point is that these palyers in the twilight of their careers with one final chance to smell the green grass and swing a bat and field the ball had tooooooo much pride to not give 100% and when they picked up their paychecks from the Payson family and Donald Grant they knew they earned it.They had to me the most underrated pitcher in baseball that year, Roger Craig. The punishment he took on the mound was brutal but he soldiered on. They had their moments but they had PRIDE and the fans knew they were giving it their all. The 2012 Mets have none of these qualities. Terry Collins can't motivate these guys and he is a perfect fit for thsi ballclub. The Wilpons, Alderson, Collins and the players all deserve each othe. They say just the opposite publicly just to keep the fans coming in but who believes them. They just plain SUCK!

Hi Rzanca,

The only difference between this and the 1962 squad was that it was not depressing back then - it was fun and the team came to play each and every day.

Different time, as well. Back then players put out because nothing was guaranteed and their careers were literally in the hands of the owner due to the unfair reserve clause. But even after that, except for those like Richie Hebner, we saw Met teams of the late seventies still playing hard every day. Today, even a 21 year old rookie makes $480,000 a year. Back in 1976, the last year before free agency, that would be the equivalent of just about $120,000 - more than the highest paid baseball player up to that time.

That's one reason why we see, at least with the Mets, the players just punching in the time clock. Let them live in the real financial world most of us do and see how quickly their attitude would change.

Lack of energy, focus, enthusiasm, fundamentals describes this game.
They played like a bunch of 6 year old Tee ball players out there.

There is no excuse for the the lack of the afore-mentioned aspects that most players come to the park with.
Where was the energy, enthusiasm on bench when Young was pitching great early?
You looked into dug out and there was no emotion on their faces.

The failure of SA's experiment in the lead off spot with Torres and Tejada better suited for 2 hole, has exposed what Reyes brought to this team, speed, energy, enthusiasm and a smile on his face during game; something this team has been lacking.

There are no table setters, Baxter despite his high OBP is no lead off hitter so rarely does the heart of lineup come up with runners on base and Tejada is finally falling to his proper avg, because he has no power either, so along with Murph not hitting for power this team is really playing worse than they should be and there is nothing TC can do because their play should be enough to shame them but apparently today's game might not be how low we go :(

And how much more miserable play should David Wright stick around for? He should pack his bags now. At 4-1, I turned the game off and tuned into Americas Got Talent. More than I could say for the play at Citi Field.

You know how bad this is getting when Keith forgets to use "just for men" on his mustache.

The team has nosedived and no matter what take one has on the reason - from a non-supportive front office to the team having played over it's head down to the players on the field from both the Omar and Alderson eras just not being as good as some of us thought - there is no excuse for such non-effort at this point. Yes, it's an emotional downer suddenly dropping out of the race and that could be an understandable reason for a short state of depressive play but now it's been enough time to have come out of that depressive station and start giving that 100 percent effort and disciplined team play once again. Right now they are just playing out the string and adding to their own individual stats.
