Wheeler’s Early Struggles Lead to 5-2 Bisons Defeat
In an early afternoon game of their series versus Lehigh Valley, Zack Wheeler struggled for the first time in his three starts in Buffalo allowing five early runs in five innings. The four runs scored in the second and the one run in the 4th off Wheeler led to a defeat for Buffalo 5-2 as the runs were too much for the Bisons offense.
In his third start for Buffalo, and second at home, Zack Wheeler struggled early on in the game and only completed five innings. In his five innings of work, Wheeler allowed eight hits, five earned runs, no walks, and five strikeouts. Zack Wheeler has pitched brilliantly over his first full season in the Mets system with over a strikeout an inning average, but is getting close to his inning limit on the season before he is shut down. Justin Hampson relieved Wheeler completing two innings, allowing one hit and two strike outs and Garrett Olson threw two innings of his own, allowing one hit and one strike out.
The Bisons’ hitting struggled again going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Brad Emaus and Zach Lutz had the only multiple hit games: Emaus 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored and Lutz 2-for-4. Fred Lewis contributed the other extra-base hit with a double and Lucas Duda and Lucas May had the only RBIs for Bisons.
Herd Rumblings: Right hander Jenrry Mejia (2-2 2.90 ERA) is expected to pitch the series finale for the Bisons versus Lehigh Valley on Friday night at 7:05pm. Mejia has pitched great since his return to the Bisons rotation after pitching very poorly following a conversion to a reliever in order to possibly help the Mets. In his six starts, Mejia has thrown 28.1 innings, allowing only three earned runs, 21 hits, and 14 strike outs with a 0.96 ERA. As a reliever, Mejia threw 21.1 innings, 13 ER, 27 hits, and 10 strike outs with a 5.55 ERA….. Buffalo Players of the Month for July were: Pitching- Collin McHugh, Hitting- Zach Lutz, and Defense- Matt Den Dekker….. Following a month where Lutz hit .339 in 19 games of July with five home runs and 11 RBI, August has been a tough month for him prior to today’s game. In 14 games Lutz is hitting .244 with zero home runs and five RBI with six walks and 14 strike outs.

0-1 4.60 in 3 Starts in triple A. Yesterday i made a comment about him getting bombed in the chatroom and hell broke loose, so…. Try to always say this kid is a stud and a bonafide future ace, no matter whether he’s having a bad day or not, the kid is superman and sandy’s price player so. Be positive at all times about him.
Ohh, and btw, just for show, the guy we traded for him is having a MVP type season (283 28 85) for a team that is very much in the hunt to make the playoffs.
I wasnt the one arguing with you – but I am certain somebody got mad because you only seem to mention him when he has bad outings.
It comes off as though you root against him.
Isn’t there a conflict of interest at play here when the Cleanup Moderator (Jessep) has an obvious bias towards certain members of the community he is charged with patrolling?
Doesn’t it make you a bigger snake that now that it’s confirmed that Jessep is the moderator that he can bait Alex who he knowingly detests for the purpose of an eventual ban?
How is the moderator even allowed to choose a side in this or any debate on this site when he is supposed to be above that and simply prevent conflict and not add to it?
How can you be unbiased when you’re being biased every time you comment on an opposing opinion?
Something is rotten in Denmark.
What is all this baiting crap? Since when are people not accountable for their own actions? Many here preach for The Mets to be accountable but the blame someone else for their lack of self control. Life doesn’t work that way.
You act as though the shoutbox is the most important aspect of this site. Stop acting like more than 5% of the users here care about the shoutbox. There’s a reason you don’t see every commentor in the shoutbox – and I’d bet that the reasons are the same as to why moderator(s) are needed there.
All I said was what happened. The problem was that several people see any time Wheeler does bad – we hear about it from the same people and it comes off as rooting against him. And the truth is, I think they are right.
That has nothing to do with any moderator mystery you think matters.
Move along and relax.
Did you see my comment about him when he had that CG shutout?? Don’t start your sh** with me ok… Move along. you’re an instigator and i am trying my best not to get baited by some of you’s.
the kid is struggling BAD as of late, i saw him live (wasn’t impressed), yet, i have said numerous times in here how him and harvey can be a great 1-2 punch for us for years to come, but of course, to instigate you only comment on what stir the pot because that’s what venomous snakes like you do…. This ain’t the chatroom ok snake, everyone in here can see your intends more often than not. Move it along
Bullcrap. He has been up and down a bit adjusting to AAA, and still has electric stuff. talk about overreacting to a couple of starts just because your life revolves around hating Sandy, and you otherwise have no apparent knowledge of baseball.
Oh, and beltran this year has absolutely nothing at all to do with Wheeler. nada. zilch. I am sure you would be much happier if they had not traded beltran and he just left as a FA with the Mets getting nothing back, so sorry it did not work out for you.
Ok.. good for you… Slurper!
Riddle me this (I am sure your fake superhero group appreciates the reference), if Wheeler is struggling BAD as of late, how is it possible for him to give up 5 runs in one of his 3 starts and still have a 4.60 ERA? Wouldn’t that suggest he in fact did not struggle too badly in his previous two?
I love Wheeler, but if you are going to expend the time to leave a comment at least try and employ an iota of common sense. ERA is an average. That means on average Wheeler does not pitch a quality start which is what a 4.60 ERA dictates. And stop grouping people, who are Senator McCarthy?
I think most of the grouping is done on the other end. My point that you missed is that you cant say he has been struggling bad as of late when in his other two games he gave up 3 runs in 10+ innings. Now you could say he had walked too many during that time but the stat used was ERA and in terms of that he has only struggled in one game in AAA. Thus as I said he has not struggled ‘badly’ as of late.
TRS, as of late he has struggled.. Not sure what your problem is, seems like you think i am nitpicking.. He had allowed like 26 runs in his last 38 IP prior to his last game in Double A. the , affter being promoted to triple A (3 games) he’s had one good outing of 6 IP and the other 2 starts he HAS STRUGGLE, the game we watch on SNY he failed to reached 5 IP, walked 4 batters and HBP one while allowing 3 hits and 3 runs. Last night, 5 IP, 8 hits and 5 runs… what else do you want me to say??
so, to recap and once again prove you wrong, out of 3 starts in triple A he’s been bad in 2 of them, not one as you pointed out. the kid has electric stuff indeed, but again, he’s wild as hell.. pitchers like that usually strikes a ton of batters but also walks tons of batter and usually fall behind in counts, leading to hitters (Except mets players who wait for walks) to smash pitches up the middle when a pitcher is trying to find the strike zone.
Attn: The CORE..
Two points, you are the one that brought up his AAA Era as a measure of his struggles in AAA not me. Thus in terms of AAA he has not struggled until last night.
Second, a what point will you grow up and stop using childish group nicknames to try to defend your point? What is the point in having a fake group whose only qualification is to agree with you ?
Well, i said he HAS STRUGGLE and used the ERA because those are his numbers in triple A no? if you want his whole stats go look it up for yourself..
“What is the point in having a fake group whose only qualification is to agree with you?”
you created a blog based on this… now you get mad at the CORE who’s been around longer than your desert???? Yeah, makes sense…
What are you talking about? I created a blog so I could call people who agree with me a childish nickname? I wasn’t aware and I don’t think that would have lasted three years if I had.
Also, again to your attempt at a point you are the one that used ERA to show his struggles and that is the wrong stat to use as he has only struggled in terms of ERA In one aaa start.
But let’s be honest, you are much harder on this kid because who acquired him and that is getting boring. I love Harvey and Wheeler and I am optimistic that these two will turn the Mets fortunes around. Why the hell would I care who acquired them?
Maybe so, but can you also agree that most of the slurpers put him up so high because of WHO ACQUIRE HIM as well?? Double Standard much???
I have not seen that at all. You see it because of who says it, not what they say. 99 % of the people even on here don’t give a damn who brought him. The reason they are high on him is most likely the fact that he became our number one prospect and fans always love their top prospects and want to think they do no wrong and are the future of the team. He certainly was dominating AA for a long period as well so that added to the hysteria.
Seriously my friend, at this point I think it’s time to move on and call a truce to put an end to this core vs the world crap and look at moves independently based on what they are and who said something about them.
Put an end to what??? YOu don’t think i’d be thrilled to have him and harvey and familia dominating the majors for years to come??? come on man, stop your instigations, there’s no point on that… Must be a pretty boring day in the desert that you’re all over the place here…
An end to the childish nicknames and grouping of people that agree or disagree with you. How bout it?
I’m fantasizing about a rotation this time next year that has Dickey, Niese, Harvey, Wheeler, and Mejia.
Yeah that’s right I left out Santana. I hope he’s great next spring so that we can get another Wheeler type prospect at the deadline.
Are we not Met fans here?
Report em as you see em. Nice job!
It seems optimistic, believe it or not, at our pitching prospects and rotation for next year.
Sign Dickey.
Our help is needed in the BP, Catcher, and OF. No small order but a few key pieces may make it work.
Reading some of he quotes from Backman seems he pitched better than his line suggests as a couple of defensive lapses played a part in his final line. Good news is velocity is there as Backman said the 1st pitch out of his hand was 98mph. Even though he threw 69% of his pitches for strikes he fell behind Ball 1 on many of the hitters and had trouble with his command according to Backman.
The kid is still adjusting to AAA. Hopefully once he adjusts he’ll start pitching better.
He does have electric stuff.. So does parnell…
He is a walking machine, he throws a lot of pitches for a kid in triple, he’s very wild, that is why you see high K’s but also lots of walk, then he tries to locate and gets hit hard. it’d be interesting to see how he adjust to hitters in the Majors because they are usually more patient at the plate and can crush fastballs at 100 mph like nothing… I hope he rebounds and do good, but the thought and notion of him being in the rotation this year should be thrown out the window..
“He is a walking machine, he throws a lot of pitches for a kid in triple, he’s very wild, that is why you see high K’s but also lots of walk, then he tries to locate and gets hit hard.”
*cough*Familia*cough*
Even Flow – can you contact me at morgantownminers@gmail.com? If not – no big deal. Just got a question for you
His walks per 9 innings right now at AAA are on par with that of Harvey and Familia. Heck his walks per 9 innings in AA compared to them was better. I am more concerned with Familia’s control than his.
I don’t think he will come up due to the innings limit the Mets have on him. It would be pretty cool if he did along with Familia and Mejia just to see them all together in a Mets uniform but if things go well Wheeler’s debut hopefully will come next year.
I should of said his walks per 9 innings right now at AAA are on par with that of Harvey not Familia. Familia is way worse at 5.1 walks per 9 innings thus far.
So did Pedro Beato.
How would you compare their success in the minors? Beato was a good risk but it didn’t work out and most likely he would have been DFA to make sure some others were protected this winter.
Hey, i was a familia supported. i want the kid to be good for us, and i was HIGH on him right? i don’t even say anything bout him anymore, yet i don’t make excuses for his struggle either, and i can use the “he started pitching at the age of 16″ excuse if i want, but i choose not to. he’s been a disappointment imo. But, he’s been viewed as a bullpen guy so.. who knows…
I don’t know if your 1st statement is to suggest you no longer support Familia since your saying it in past tense. I am going to take it as a typo and you still do support him until you say otherwise.
I like Familia I like all our prospects I give them props when I read they do well and I am concerned when they struggle but I know that Wheeler gets ragged on more at times due to how he came to be a Met so I don’t concern myself when I see it happen.
You make it a point to say you don’t make excuses for Familia. That is fine. I’ll make it a point to say I don’t either and a point to say I express concern when a prospect struggles and try to understand why it may be happening.
Familia I will always support as long as he wears a Mets uniform as I do with any prospect. Harvey has looked real good and if Familia and Wheeler can come up and have a similar success the Mets will have a stable of young arms not seen in a long time.
I would say I agree but that’s already understood as Alex said I created a blog just because you and I agree on everything… I guess they really haven’t read the comment section lol.
MNJ, i do support all mets players, i do agree however that wheeler gets a bad rap, even from the CORE members.. But hey, if he’s the savior, the answer to our prayers as some of the slurpers of sandy said shouldn’t we be concern when he struggles?
With that being said, i love familia, you know this, but he’s been very inconsistant this year, so i do not know what to make of him, one start he’s dominating, next start, he’s all over the place. Not sure what to make of him as a starter is my point.. But, the kid does throw HARD!!!
So again you throw the rap on everyone because of the comments of a few And let those form your opinion of a player or move instead of looking at them independently. I have never once said Wheeler is a savior and I want you to find anything saying he alone will turn the Mets around. We all say Wheeler and Harvey.
Shut up… You do the same when people don’t agree with your stupid post and articles, that is why you spend most of your time here instead of the desert you created…
Really, show me one time that I develop my opinion on something just because someone else I don’t like thinks differently. When I agree with you about something I have no problem admitting it.
Also, again with the desert. You do realize when you insult it you are insulting much more than me. You are insulting the authors that work hard for free to produce a fine and well liked product. Just because I can multitask doesn’t mean I am not there as well. In fact right now we are discussing Harvey, if Turner would pass through waivers, the fact that Thole caught Harvey’s lesser starts…
Right, should i apologize to kingman then??? A guy who all he did was come here to bash the site and its author and you would LOL’ed at his rants up until joe D banned his ass from here and you became self aware? spare me the Drama, **** the desert!!!!
Actually you can go back and ask Joe if I called out Kingman before he was banned but you wouldn’t like the answer. I could also forward you the email I sent to Kingman as a result of his poor choices. In fact Kingman and I have had our own knockdown drag outs and rarely see eye to eye. What he said was wrong, it still is and I said so. Bact to the Core layer to make up some more crap.
It’s good to know you still love Familia. Look from where I see it you make a point not so much to express concern but to just show what Wheeler does whenever he pitches bad. In fact you admittedly ignore doing this when Familia struggles which say what you will has struggled for the most part this season at AAA.
If you look at all 3 prospects Harvey, Familia and Wheeler at what they did in AA Wheeler has out pitched them. If you look at all 3 prospects 1st 3 starts when they started at AAA all 3 have struggled similarly.
There is reason to be just as excited for Wheeler as there is for Harvey and Familia that is how I view it. How others view it I try not to concern myself with.
Exactly MNJ. I watched the replay of the game late last night on MILB.TV and a bad call by the 3B ump, a mis-judged flyball bay none other than Lucas Duda and a humpback liner that SS Josh Rodriguez missed caused 3 of those 4 2nd inning runs. With a decent defense and an ump with better eyes and he only gives up 2 runs over 5 IP. Only 3 balls were hit hard. The HR was crushed and should land any day now, a double and one of the singles was hit hard. The rest of the hits were bloops and there were 2 hard hit balls that were run down by Den Dekker but he wasn’t as bad as his pitching line looked. The key stat was no walks. Some people are rooting for this kid to fail.
“The HR was crushed and should land any day now”
LOL!
I was actually gonna mention that because I watched it too. But Jessep got me sidetracked and I forgot to. I think the bad call was the norm for the minors, but the Duda misplay and J-Rod had a lot to do with the runs scored. Wheeler was actually very solid in this defeat and the numbers do not tell the story.
I need to point out that until Wheeler actually makes it to the majors and proves to be at least a solid number 3 pitcher, he will always be a lightning rod because of what it cost to acquire him and where the Mets were when the deal was consummated.
Every Wheeler start is going to have more significance than any other minor league start and people need to start adjusting to that instead of reacting either way depending on if it’s a good start or bad.
Wheeler is a lightning rod. End of story.
You think that is the only reasons he is a lightning rod?
Anyway, he was acquired for a two month rental so I am not sure why that impacts the discussion too much.
