The Mets have two major issues in the OF and in the bullpen.

I'm going to say this time and time again, but I believe the only way to remedy the situation is to trade prospect for prospect. Find teams that value some of our prospects more than we do and move them for an other team's prospect that we value more.

Perfect example is Mejia who seems to be incapable of being a RP. We need to find a team that believes he can be in their rotation right away and trade him for one of their better prospects and since young SP are such a hot commodity, we could probably get a really good prospect back for him and one that could be a big help in the bullpen...

Everyone continues to forget one thing. The owners no longer hold the trump cards in negotiations. While David Wright has always talked about remaining a Met, unless they "bowl" him over with an offer why shouldn't he wait and test the free agent waters. Most players and their agents have a pretty good idea of what they will be asking when they hit free agency so unless their current team hits or gets close to hitting those numbers it is foolish not to take a look at what offers will be made.

Then there is always the idea that a fresh start in a new city could help to ease the stress of having to play in front of the media and fan craze that exists in N.Y.C.

While, I was glad that the team did not get involved in the bidding war for Jose Reyes and happy with the emergence of Ruben Tejada, I don't blame Jose for looking for the best deal. It's a short career for most players and a guy like Jose is not going to retire and become a white collar business man. For him, hopefully he invests his money in something safe that will always earn him an income. Davis Wright is another story but he has a family to think about and an agent who is not going to be influenced by sentiment!

I really believe that the team will make a evaluation of what the best third basement are making these days and make an offer to David that is commensurate with those numbers!

But we are going to have to wait a bit longer!

If the mets are trying to build for the future...

why does Murphy continue to play 1B sporadically..this is the same team that made a big hoopla over Tejada not showing up early so he can build "chemistry" with Murphy at 2B....

now Murphy gets to stunt his defensive progress by playing 1B....

If the mets are trying to build for the future...

why is Ike Davis on the bench....not learning how to hit lefties...

Can we now conclude that the Adults were NEVER in the room?

They just need to look towards the future and look to get something good back for Wright and Santana. Thole is not good with handling the pitchers, Murphy is just a good hitter that can't field (meant to be a DH), and Torres is not part of the future and he's not good.
Nobody knows if we've seen the very best (excepting the no-hitter) that we ever will for JS. I am willing to go another year with him if he finishes 2012 strong and continues developing into winter and spring. However, I do share the skepticism of many.

So far the true keepers to me are:

Dickey
Wright
Tejada
Murphy
Ike--I guess
Rauch
Niese
Hairston--utility
Turner--utility
Cedeno--utility

Just not enough to comment on younger guys

Everyone else dispensable

Dan,

My thing is either you decide to put a good group of professional hitters around wright by signing free agents or through trades....If they decide they want to build from within young prospects i see no reason to re-sign Wright, but rather trade him for more close to pro ready prospects to increase their chances of producing talent from the minors

I dont see Wright as a guy that can carry a team but i do see him as a complementary player, like holliday was to pujols.

I agree Amazin....you dont evaluate your young players by giving them half a year...if mlb pitchers adjust to them you allow the hitters to adjust to the pitchers you dont send them to the minors to face competition they excel against already.

The Mets are doing themselves a disservice by hanging onto Santana. I know he got the first no hitter, but his $25 million next season is a serious albatross. If you could pay half that salary and get back a prospect a'la Wheeler, then you would set yourself up for the future and have $12 million plus to spend to get an outfielder or two. Having that much money tied up in a solid but unspectacular player with questionable health is simply bad business.

Which brings us to Bay. Suck it up, admit your mistake and move on. You have to pay him either way. If he's not productive off the bench, then why are you devoting a roster spot to him?

Finally, get some right handed hitting. You have Davis, Murphy, Duda, Valdespin, Baxter, Thole and Nieuwenhuis all left handed. Surely there are some teams in the opposite situation. Trade for equivalent right handed talent.

Then again, maybe I should be careful what I wish for. The only trade made this year sent Pagan for those two superstars Ramirez and Torres. Ugh.

Whatever happens with the NY METS must involve DW. You can also add Tejada, Harvey and Wheeler and Dickey. Beyond that everything is up in the air, I know we have Santana but his health?. Thole maybe maybe not same as Ike. Everyone says Murphy is gone before we are in contention, The outfield is a shambles right now. There is certainly promise in Valdespin but at what position. So we say rebuild but around what? This year is becoming draining and a very slow and tedious exodus from the middle of the pack.

I love my New York Mets. I am becoming a little leery of plans that are not near hatching.

We are lost right now you can feel it and next year may just be a repeat. There is no cavalry and money is tied up into Bay and Santana. One of whom is Baseball's biggest mystery the other made Met history and Saturday should prove revealing.

Dickey is the bright spot, the resurgence of a health DW, and spirit in the first half. Waiting for a Collins explosion or clubhouse dissension to seal the deal.

One of whom is Baseball’s biggest mystery the other made Met history and Saturday should prove revealing.

Dickey is the bright spot, the resurgence of a health DW, and spirit in the first half. Waiting for a Collins explosion or clubhouse dissension to seal the deal.

The difference with pujols was that even though they let him insane bat walk, they still had a star in Holliday, and up and coming bats in Freese Molina and they added Beltran to that mix.

Holliday is no Pujols, but he is damn good.

If we let Wright walk we have to start over to find that franchise guy all over again. And not to mention there is no Freese or Molina in our lineup

Face of the franchise? Oy vey, are we still saying that...its a tired useless term...Wright is ouur best player right now period...no face of the franchise, no team leader, or any fancy other fancy useless titles that serve no purpose.

"We can’t try to build a winning team if we let our franchise star walk."....

Wow, thats a little too much Dan...If the Cards can let Pujols (the best in the game)go any player can be let go.

My opinion is, the Mets should re-sign Wright but only if they are committed to adding other professional hitters around him. If not then yes they should trade him for a few top mlb ready prospects. It makes no sense to hold onto him just for the sake of having a "face of the franchise" or whatever that is. If the mets arent committed to spending money then they should be all in for the future similar to what the Astros are doing.

Im tired of this pretending to be contenders until the allstar break....
