Pedro Beato To Red Sox As PTBNL In Shoppach Trade
Keith Law of ESPN, is reporting that the Mets have sent RHP Pedro Beato to the Boston Red Sox as the player to be named later in the trade they made to acquire catcher Kelly Shoppach.
The Mets acquired Beato via the Rule 5 draft in 2010.
Beato spent the entire 2011 season on the Major League roster, but lost significant time to the disabled list with a shoulder injury.
The young right-hander spent most of this season with Triple-A Buffalo, but did make seven appearances with the Mets posting a 10.38 ERA in just 4 1/3 innings.

Ahhh… i thought this guy was a great Rule V pick up along with brad eamus??? no????? SMH
Hey, we got a decent catcher in return for him so who cares
i liked him , would have loved to see him pitch some more innings, well , maybe he will show what he can in Boston . Well, shoppach will probably give us 2 HR and 10RBI´s , so yippie
I actually liked Beato.
Considering Shoppach is a free agent after this season and Beato stays under team control for a little time…
We might have gotten fleeced. Why trade away young potential talent for a backup catcher?
Nice move by the Red Sox. Classic upside for downside trade and they get to keep Beato while Shoppach’s a free agent in six weeks..
Stupid move by the Mets. I understand they may not be high on Beato but he is only 25 with a great arm and has been misused by the Mets. They overpaid for sure.
4.67 ERA with 5.6 K/9 and 3.7 BB/9 in 71 1/3 relief innings with the Mets over the last two seasons.
That is definitely unspectacular.
Yeah, but think about his situation. He was a Rule V that had never played above AA before. So he was thrust into a big league role by rule and was not bad last season. This season he was terrible, but coming off injury. I wish Beato had at least one full, healthy season with some work in the high minors under his belt before a decision was made to acquire a poor catcher for 50 games.
It’s more about the roster cruch a coming I think.
I hear you man. And wish he wasn’t unspectacular.
This is not letting Verlander go. This is much ado about nothing.
Muchado about most likely nothing is right. Remember many teams passed on Beato before and did again this time, same with Stoppach.
When you are mad in general, it helps to have an outlet, I guess.
I get all that. I just wish it wasn’t a young reliever that we’re not sure about yet. Actually, I wish the Shoppach trade never happened. He possesses zero upside. But if it HAD to happen (which it didn’t), I just wish it wasn’t a young reliever that we’re not sure about.
Gotcha. I think this trade is not worth it if he does not re-sign. So, come post season, we’ll see…
I just think that due to the pending roster crunch it was trade or release for Beato.
You may be right. But we’re assuming Shoppach will be re-signed. The Mets had 39 men on the 40, so they presumably could have simply added Shoppach if they only gave up something like a non-prospect A ball pitcher. That’s of course assuming the Sox would have gone for that guy, which they may not have. But speaking strictly 40-man wise, a player from the 40 did not have to be removed in order to add Shoppach. Then if you assume Shoppach is gone after the season, anyhow, they’re just back to where they started. Do you know how many kids they have to add to protect them from the Rule V this winter? Or your best guess?
More rebuilding I guess. Not that Beato was anything special, but give me a break. with Shoppach. What a terrible defensive catcher and he doesnt even know any of the NL hitters either. This oughta be fun and Sandy Alderson did promise us that in 2012..
Pedro Beato says Josh Thole should have caught that one was Beato’s ticket out of here.
Don’t like anything about this at all.
Booo
You guys do realize Beato had to clear waivers for the trade to occur so not much of a demand really. In fact maybe the Mets just put him on waivers and then the Red sox selected him. That means a lot of teams could have blocked this deal on either side.
12 teams could have blocked it
Stoppach had to clear waivers as well. Also doesnt it have to go through that entire league bottom to top first, the the other league so a lot more than 12 could have blocked it unless they changed the rules.
12 teams (not including Mets) have a worse record than the Red Sox. All 30 teams could claim him, but only 12 have waiver priority over the Red Sox if I’m not mistaken.
I thought based in my understanding it has to clear the trading teams league first starting with the bottom then it goes to the bottom of the other league.
Oh I think you’re right
Funny how you left out the Shoppach part of the waiver story. Ah yes, the Alderson era, lies and half truths. Its awesome.
Actually if you could actually read you would notice I did mention that Stoppach was as well. Not sure why it matters.
Blocking deals during waiver periods is rare. Can you name the last time it happened before that Chris Carter time?
The reason it’s rare because in August and September all teams have huge 40 man roster considerations to make. They also have to protect their own prospects that become Rule 5 eligible in 6-7 weeks.
Most teams wont play games on fringe players like Shoppach or Beato, but would intervene if they heard a R.A. Dickey deal was going down or Hairston. Especially as a defensive maneuver.
Almost every teams players are placed on waivers and mostly the good ones are claimed and all pulled back. I’m sure Wright was on waivers too.
That’s how this works.
I am not saying block it for spite. I am saying we are dealing with two players who are not sought after.
Another move that makes little sense. A potential valuable arm for a back up catcher?
Yeah, awesome deal…. Beato 25 years old and throws well up in the 90s. Shoppach a youthful 32 year old catcher with an awesome batting average of 32 and able to walk away in 50 games. Yes, that Sandy Alderson does know how to age the team. It must be the new building for the future theories. It will be great when he tells the Wilpons to restore old timers day so these guys can look good. Another good say for Sandy Alderson, the GM who times passed by (when they started that testing stuff).
I’m not even going to comment I’m just going to laugh!
Wow. They gave up too soon on this kid. Beato still had a world of potential to be a big part of the bullpen despite his shortcomings in his previous MLB stint. All he needed to do was find his niche of consistency again back in Buffalo. He was lights out when he was recovering from his shoulder issues and at one point, what was his ERA? 1.12? Not to mention he looked very promising when he first showed up with a sparkling 0.00 ERA a few months into last season. We need as much relief help as we can get and we give up a diamond in the rough. Yuck.
We Have some big time 40 man issues coming next year so some may Have been cut to protect more important prospects.
We were probably going to DFA Beato anyway after the season
A very lame defense of another “good” day for Alderson.
Who cares? The guy lands in a different spot on the mound every pitch. If you do not have the capacity to learn and improve, you will fail at the highest levels.
You guys mean to tell me that Beato is a valuable arm? He flat out stunk for us in almost every chance he was given. This guy fought fire with gasoline and you’re complaining that he was dealt? Come on! I like the deal. I only wish it had been made over a month ago when the team was still in contention. Pedro Beato, I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors.
No Javi most of us here thought at the time we got him that he might not have been a BAD Acquisition but other here heraldd him as the sign of all the great things to come and the type of deisions we could expect from the great and Powerful Alderson who was going to turn this team around with all his wise moves and great evaluations…
But it would seem that he has given up or been wrong about every player he has ever brought here with the possible exception of Hairston and Baxter!
Beato has a fine arm and decent stuff. I think the mets thought they could fix his mechanics. I also think he is too damned dumb to correct simple physical techniques. They took a shot. Did not cost much. Bye bye.
