Wow thanks SRT, great question! I have a ton of respect for John Sickles, and I am happy to say that all-in-all I agree with everything he says except for his grade which I think is a tad conservative in light of the season and progress that Flores has had this year. I would give him a B+ after this season. The other thing I disagree about is his positions. Sickles states third or second base. I don’t believe he can play second base in the major leagues and would substitute first base for second. He will be a corner infielder, first or third, those are the only spots that make sense for him. I believe he will certainly start out at Triple-A next year, as he has absolutely nothing left to prove in Double-A. I also believe he has just started to scratch the surface of his power potential.

I recently ranked him as the tenth best pitching prospect in the Mets system. If you put a gun to my head right now I would rank him between 9th and 13th. But he is not in the Mets overall top ten yet. He has looked very good this year and I have seen nothing to make me think he is over-rated. I am basing my present analysis on seeing him pitch once this year in person, and twice on TV, and also from talking to his manager and teammates.

well, he seems to have pretty well mastered AA. So, why not AAA? Unless they want to keep him in Bingo, and not the PCL (wherever they end up). Not sure it makes a whole heck of a lot of difference though, since if he starts in AA, he probably won’t be there for long.

“Despite not having pitched in almost two weeks, Fulmer just went on the D.L. with a left shin contusion. That’s the same injury that plagued righty reliever Erik Turgeon of the B-Mets before he was released at mid-season. Even though Turgeon was pitching awful this year, he was on and off the D.L. three times with a left shin contusion. I guess there’s a lot of that going on in baseball these days.”

I heard those shin contusions are contagious. In fact I got one while reading this post. It was from the virus I caught from my computer.

I was even less thrilled before the season and saw him more as a grade C, I was never more happier to be wrong about him. He’s now one of the players we have that I’m very excited about.

If Flores remains on his current path of development, he should hit for average with at least moderate power while providing steady defense at either third base or second base. I had him as a Grade B- pre-season and would move that to a strong Grade B at this point. There is still enough risk and uncertainty here to preclude a higher grade, but overall his outlook is brighter than it was a year ago.
