Harvey, Wheeler, Harris Receive Top Honors From Baseball America
Baseball America released their annual Best Tools Survey for 2012. It’s one of my favorite features and I always look forward to it.
Basically they survey minor league scouts and league managers for all the affiliates, put all that info together, and then decide which prospects have the best tools over two dozen different categories.
We have a few Mets prospects that made the list:
Matt Harvey: Was named the Best Pitching Prospect in the International League. It was a remarkable honor because he was not recognized for having any of the best individual pitches.
Zack Wheeler: Was named the Best Pitching Prospect in the Eastern League and was also recognized for having the Best Fastball and Best Breaking Pitch in the league. Nice!
Alonzo Harris: This Mets speedster was named the Florida State League’s Best Baserunner. Harris has had a solid all-around season for St. Lucie.
Ryan Ellis: Was named the Florida State League’s Best Managerial Prospect. No doubt an honor he earned for an amazing first half of the season.

Aderlin Rodriguez doesnt have the most power in the South Atlantic? Must be some pretty strong guys down their. BTW isn’t this type old?
What many people have always failed to grasp when they try to act like Baseball America is some evil publication that gets it wrong is this statement right here
“Basically they survey minor league scouts and league managers for all the affiliates”
Nah your not a BA guy and never read or give creedence to what they say as you keep on insisting whenever anyone calls you out as a guy who over relies on the opinion of Scouts and managers who have a vested interest in promoting the kids they manage and have found…
What I read of Baseball America – I read at MMO.
My point was there are SOME who acted (and even said) that Baseball America “owes people an apology.”
Because they feel for some odd reason that what BA does is sit in a dark room, decide who will be good and spit out a list and hope for the best.
They refuse to admit the rankings are in large part due to actual conversations with people who make player decisions.
Yup, Baseball America compiles, processes and relays information.
Thier hit or miss rate suggests maybe they should move to a dark room!
For every name you cite as a good player that came off thier list are 5 players who made the list and are busts!
What is an acceptable hit rate? What are you comparing them to? What are you calling a “hit”?
Wel hell what is the point of asking those guys if you have a better chance picking winners with a Coin Flip?
As for my definition of a what a HIT is why don’t you tell us all what you think a guy on BA’s list is SUPPOSED to be when he gets to the MLB!
What the heck is the point of asking professional scouts then also?
No one does ask professional scouts once they are drafted and put in the Minors!
Then the coaches who work with them are the ones who evaluate the players.
What you don’t understand (but probably should if you really have a background in marketing) is that BA asks who they ask and the opinion they get really is moot since the people they ask have not seen the rest of the players that eventually get RANKED!
One team who had a lot of high draft picks or picked AS EXPECTED based on what scouts said about them 2 years ago are the ones who get more guys on the list and it really has nothing to do with who is better than who!
The other thing you fail to grasp with my problem of your use of BA is that BA is a fine for what it is. A publication to read and pass the time but it is NO GOOD AT ALL when used the way you guys always attempted to use it as an arbitor of which team had the best Minor League system in the MLB!
It’s not any decent indicator of who has the best or strongest MiL system at all!
In fact I bet teams that by your standard had a weak MiL system probably had more kids come up and make the MLB than the team you thought had the best system!
Any positive recognition of Mets prospects is always welcome. Especially from a well known publication like Baseball America. Congrats to the Mets prospects on the recognition.
Thanks for the info; I have read BA for ages, they provide info collected then present in their magazine/paper and the you take it for what its worth.
Most kids evaluated,as are draft picks, are a shot in the dark most times, especially with pitchers.
Glad to have some recognition for Minor League players in our system from outside source.
