Sickels’ Updated Top 120 Prospect Rankings
Minor League Ball’s John Sickels released his Mid-Season Top 120 Prospect List this week and there were some nice surprises from a Mets perspective as Wilmer Flores jumped from being previously unranked to No. 76, an indication of how far Flores has seen his stock rise this season.
The Mid-Season Rankings did not include any players selected in the recent 2012 First Year Players Draft.
Zack Wheeler (No. 13) jumped out in front of Matt Harvey (No. 32) to take the top spot for the Mets on the list.
2011 first-rounder Brandon Nimmo slipped a little from 93 to 96, but it was negligible. RHP Jeurys Familia moved down a few ticks as well from 95 to 98.
RHP Michael Fulmer and 3B Jefry Marte both received honorable mentions.
The big news of course was to see Wilmer Flores make the grade after taking a huge hit in his prospect status in the past 18 months.
Finally, the Mets had more prospects ranked than any of their NL East rivals; NYM 5, MIA 4, ATL 3, WAS 3, PHI 2.

Ummmmm… SO??? Does this guarantee success in the bigs????? If so, sign me in the wheeler bandwagon… if not, 3 more years for nimmo and co…
Wow some mets fans can’t enjoy anything…
That’s a dumb question. NOTHING can guarantee success in the big leagues. But having prospects with lots of potential makes success more likely.
No I would say havig rospects that REACH their potential makes success more likely but just having guys with potential means nothing if they don’t ever attain what they are supposedly capable of doing…
F-Mart had a TON of potential maybe even more than Wheeler and Nimmo at some point…
Did he make our success more likely?
NOPE!
Potential is nothing more than ODDS in a betting game!
If you play the odds sure you can win yet how many people play the don’t pass line in Craps and why are the majority of the bets made all on less likely outcomes?
Because thats where the GOOD drafters get seperated from the rest!
Anyone can pick a guy high on everyone’s list that doesn’t mean you did well or did better than someone else!
You just did what they would have done given the same opportunity.
It’s what you do and how you succeed with the guys who don’t get recognized as having POTENTIAL that makes the team successful!
Get a winner in that group does a lot more for you than getting a win on some guy everyone thinks is going to be a good player!
Well obviously having prospects turn out right makes you more likely to succeed. That’s the same as saying “if you have good players, you are probably going to do well”
My point was the better your system is, the more likely it is that someone will turn out well.
And my point was imply it really doesn’t matter how much upside a player has for that to be true!
What you think he might do has nothing to do with developing him properly…
One is a guess. And while it might be a good guess it’s irrelevant to how you develop…
If you develop well then they don’t need a big “MAYBE” cieling to get lots of good kids out the system.
You get a good as you can but after that all that ceiling is worthless until he hits it!
The Mets farm system is finally getting some recognition, love it!
Wheeler and Harvey moving up. Here’s hoping when they finally come up they’re successful pieces of the starting rotation for years to come.
Keeping my eye on Flores too.
Hey anytime our prospects get positive recognition is a good thing.
Amen and amen.
I like what I’ve been reading about Fulmer. He’s only 19, but he’s been having a great season in Savannah. He’ll probably never be as good a prospect as Wheeler and Harvey are, but I could see him replacing them as the top pitching prospect in the system once they’re in the big leagues.
Yep, I’ve been happy with what he’s done this year as well. Really surprising that at NINETEEN he’s doing so well in Single-A.
He will be at St. Lucie at 20. That’s impressive.
ThE only was that really moved was wheeler and Flores, Harvey moved up due to promotions by Harper, trout, etc.
