Hi Kay,

Injury is one part of the game nobody can predict will happen (OK, maybe with Jose Reyes LOL) so moves can't depend upon that.

With KRod, it's just not him for as others have said, with the bullpen we have now, there would not be too many opportunities to even get to that ninth. That is why I always include the discarded Takahashi and Issringhausen in my discussions. They had proven track records and are still doing the job today.

Not excusing those who could not step up for not being able to do so, however, I'm not excusing the front office for obtaining those players who couldn't - and getting rid of those who could.

LGM - anyway :)

Hi Joey - That may well be the case, on paper but that's an excuse - they are MLB players, they need(ed) to step up. To blame SA that the bullpen tanked because KRod was traded seems empty to me (as I said above), what if, KRod had gotten hurt and was gone the remainder of the year?

Are YOU kidding me? How am I defending this bullpen? I said it must change, keep making things up and reading things to fit your agenda. How dare I take a shot at the other bullpens? Really? Why because YOUR lord Omar put them together? There were awful too, especially 08. This current bullpen is HORRENDOUS and must be fixed. Do I need to say that again, or should I give you a chance to twist those words too?

Did you really write "down the stretch i think EVERYONE got tired, it happens…" I can't believe what I'm reading. So YOU are now defending them for getting tired. Yet how many times have you brought up DWright's K for the first out in a tie game in the top of the 9th in one game late in 08 and blamed him for not making the post season? You are consistently inconsistent to fit your agenda.

The whole bullpen last year went in the tank when KROD left is an empty argument. How many games were blown before the 9th inning. KROD was the closer, he would only have been used in that capacity. So the bullpen blowing games in the 7th, 8th inning had nothing to do with KROD leaving, just an excuse (you know the thing you hate).

Do you remember the game where Ike was thrown about 8 curve balls in a row and even Keith commented: 'can't go to that well too many times'. Bang, Ike hit the next pitch out of the park.

I didn't mind the fastball there. It was the location that stunk. Should have been upstairs. Change his line of site.

I went from extreme euphoria when Valdy jolted it out of the park, to an unexplainable sadness when Parnell blew the save. He was getting strikes with his curve, why did Thole call for the fastball after 8 straight curves for strikes? I mean yeah it was Parnell's fault, but Thole called that pitch.

I see two problems with Parnell.

Problem #1. His fastball is too straight. Guys are sitting on it and just sticking their bats out and letting the velocity of the pitch do all the work. He needs to change his grip and get some movement on the ball. Just a little cut or tail on the ball wold make a big difference.

Problem #2. Bobby does not throw inside. His Curve is very nice, it's down the middle but effective. Everyone of his fastballs are away! Guys can't slap at the fastball that's inside on them. He's got to throw inside and keep the hitters from diving out and slapping at it.

Bobby has a lot of bad luck, but that bad luck is caused by just throwing the ball and not pitching.

Top of the second, Bay grounds into a DP after Hairston singles. 2 out. Ike and Torres single. One run minimum lost there.

Top of the seventh with Wright on third and 1 out, Bay flies out to short center not even deep enough to score that run.

He had two opportunities for RBIs and couldn't get it done. He did nothing at the plate, going 0 for 3 before Terry made the correct decision to PH for him with Valdespin in the 9th.

IMO, this signing is worse than the Oliver Perez one.
Right now we have too many holes to have this automatic out in the middle of the lineup.

And I agree about his demeanor. Seems like a nice guy but he's a nice guy just not getting it done. He has to go.

Joey D, i get the whole option was a problem, i get all that.. but what was the point of us getting rid of him? to save money we didn't even use? We still went shopping to the 99 cent store. Not sure what good that did for us last year, our bullpen was solid, hell, parnell had a sub 3 ERA, i think it was 2.80 ERA or something like that, Izzy was good for us in the 8th spot, i mean, things where ok for us... then, it all fell apart after the second half.. And they haven't been the same since.. Yet, you wonder, who else are we supposed to criticize for that? We killed omar for his acquisiition of the bullpen, why not do the same with alderson? He's done a terrible job overall in pretty much all the players he has acquired so far... IT's gotten to the point that bench players are his greatest acquisitions.

Hi Alex,

I hope more will recognize the damage caused by KRod being sent off. No matter what one wants to say, there was no disputing that despite the often hair breath Harry routine, he was an impact player in the bullpen.

We are in a situation now that we do have to concentrate on re-building and could be out of serious contention for another year or so unless that second wild-card still dangles hope in one's face and we satisfied with a team that might win 85 games and make it into the post-season each year.

We weren't in quite the same situation last season - we were a better team even though in transition but didn't have to find ourselves in the situation now with a hole in center, the bullpen and bench. Pagan in center, Krod and Issy (and Takahashi from 2010) still in the pen would have made a big difference this year and signing Francisco for a relief role he is better suited for (and same with Parnell) the same.

If the Mets are broke sort of speak, then yes, we had no choice. If we weren't and could have sustained these players, then Sandy got his wish by starting nearly from scratch when he could have been on the first or second floor.

I'm not one to give up on players as easily as most, but I totally agree on Bay. He had 3 lousy ABs last night and didn't look confident at all. I cannot envision him ever getting straightened out in NY as he just looks completely out of sync.

The only good thing about him is that he's not a complete jerk like Bobby Bo was and he's not a tub of lard like Mo Vaughn came to be. Nonetheless, I wish they would DFA him immediately in as dignified manner as possible.

Thanks Fonzie13 for pointing that out. Heath Bell never got the opportunity that Parnell has had. Management, in addition to the fans at that time, always wanted proven stars.

In terms of Parnell's performance, he got squeezed on the very first 2 calls from the ump. Both of those pitches could have easily been called strikes as they were on the black. Add that to that lame call at first (where Andres was safe by a full step), and I'd say that the umps are determined to cement the Mets' fate.

Nonetheless, Bobby has been good in the 7th and 8th so unless San Diego really wants him for Street, there's no reason to just give him away. Much of his struggles seems to revolve around location of the fastball and its straightness. In the 7th/8th inning jobs he performed earlier in the season, he seemed to locate his pitches better and got a lot of grounders.

Uhhhhh, Excuse me??? Why do you feel the need to take a shot at other bullpen for us?
In 2007 our bullpen was not this bad,... Not even close, down the stretch i think EVERYONE got tired, it happens... All you doing is defending how bad this bullpen has been by accusing the others of the same... WRONG!!!! last year we were the #4 best BULLPEN in the league in the first half, then, the need of save money for the wilpons sandy DESTROYED what seem to be one of our biggest strengths..
Here's the bullpen ERA since 2007
2007: 22-21 4.03 18 Blown Saves 39 Svs
2008: 28-28 4.27 28 Blown saves 43 Svs
2009: 17-28 3.89 21 Blown saves 39 Svs
2010: 26-27 3.59 16 Blown saves 36 Svs
2011: 24-27 4.33 24 Blown saves 43 Svs

Last year we had 17 losses and 14 blown saves after trading Krod.... Not to mention, our bullpen ERA was amongst the best in baseball.... We saved up $17.5 million though...

Lost in all this yet another horrendous showing of this god-awful BP is Jason Bay.

The gift that keeps on giving....long after the gift giver is gone.

There should be no way he's this team come next season, money be damned.

I agree with everybody complaining about the bullpen, but nobody mentioned how bad the Nationals pen was last nite. The difference is that Clippard came in with 14 saves in a row and had only blown 3 saves all year.To make the playoffs, you need a closer who saves an average of 80 per cent of his opportunities.Parnell clearly is not the guy.He has a track record of complete failure, yet this organization keeps allowing him to fail. When Francisco got hurt, Alderson had to make a move for a closer. He didn't and we get nightmares like the 2nd Atlanta game and last nite's disgrace to watch
