I too would like to see Sandy Alderson make a move to help this team but not for another center fielder Before this injury to Dillon Gee I would have said we need a left fielder and or a catcher with some pop. We still do but in order for us to remain competitive we are going to need some help depth wise for our starters. It would be wrong to rush Matt Harvey. He is an important part of our future. We need a guy who is going to give us some innings and I am sure that Sandy knows this.

For any of you who think like Alex 68 that Sandy Alderson is not the best thing that has happened to us since Frank Cashen…..don’t quit your day jobs!

I’m sure Dillon must be scared through all this, especially at such a young age when we all never expect to face these type of serious health issues. As with most others, our first concern is with Dillon and not the Mets.

But looking at it as an issue the club must face, I don’t know if there is any other way the team can make up for the loss in any extended amount of time but with having to turn to the farm system. We already need help in the bullpen and the bench and Sandy has advised us that his financial resources are quite limited – even for that. So looking for outside help on top of that makes that option nearly impossible. If anything, Sandy might choose to wait until August 1st and see who goes on waivers should this lower the pricetag. I don’t even know if claiming a player off waivers and taking on his remaining salary could fall into Sandy’s price range.

also, I don’t think Harvey is really in that same situation as those other guys Joe listed, particularly Pelf.

He seems to be just about ready. They had some things for him to work on, which he seems to have done. and he has a decent amount of innings in the minors, plus of course a bunch in a major college program. And he is 23 already, so not that young.

cold he (like just about every other guy) benefit from some more AAA starts? Maybe. But if he is that close (and Wally seems to think he is!) then he is going to have to make the next step soon enough.

I think this means Batista goes into the rotation for now… then they will wait to see how Gee progresses leading to the deadline.

If Gee looks like he will be out for an extended period of time, go get Bartolo rather than call up Harvey.

if the schedule really is such that it would only need to be 1 start (7/21?), then no chance Harvey comes up for it. I really think that if they bring him up, they want to keep him up for a regular job. Besides, putting him on the 40 man for 1 start would make more of a roster mess than they already have.

so, for 1 (even 2) starts expect Heffner, or (yuck) batista, since they are already on the roster.

and being that far out, they don’t need to make the extra move to replace batista (to save him) for a bit. Just need to call up one guy for now to get back to 7 (which they needed to do anyway). Probably Edgin for Friday?

the other interesting move will be Bay (Tuesday?) but that was going to be a position player anyway. Then another position guy when Gee comes back (assuming they go short 1 SP until then).

but mostly, thank goodness they caught this and treated it early, before it had a chance to migrate and become more dangerous.

Well assuming that he’ll be back in 15 days retroactive to his last start, and lets hope that’s the case, we’ll probably need to find someone to take his three starts. I wouldn’t mind giving Harvey one of those starts or perhaps Collin McHugh. Anything but Batista or Schwinden who is back with Buffalo again.
