Santana Leads Mets Into Last Series Before All Star Beak – Bring On The Cubs!

Starting Lineup

  1. Ruben Tejada – SS
  2. Ronny Cedeno – 2B
  3. David Wright – 3B
  4. Scott Hairston – LF
  5. Lucas Duda – RF
  6. Justin Turner – 1B
  7. Mike Nickeas – C
  8. Kirk Nieuwenhuis – CF
  9. Johan Santana – LHP

The Cubs and Mets start their last series before the All-Star break tonight as the Mets look for revenge from the last Cubs/Mets series. Last night the Mets were on the verge of losing the series against the Phillies when the offense started a real, 2012 Mets style ralley and with a some good AB’s they got the runs in. Anyway, Johan Santana looks to keep the energy levels up as he takes on Travis Wood.

Santana is 6-4 on the season over 16 games and 98.0 innings with a 2.76 ERA. Johan is 2-1 in his last three starts (20 IP) with a 0.90 ERA including 6.0 innings against the Cubs where he allowed 2 ER over 5 hits. The Cubs have the following numbers again Johan:

Johnson: 13-20, 2B, 3B, HR
DeJesus: 4-24, 2B
Soriano 2-20
Mather 1-6
Castro 0-2

Travis Wood is 3-3 on the season over 9 starts and 56.0 innings of work with a 3.05 ERA. Wood is the midst of a good stretch where he has allowed 1 ER in his last three starts, including a 7.0 inning shut out against the Mets last week. The Mets have the following numbers against Wood:

Cedeno 3-6, 2B
Torres 2-5
Davis 1-5
Tejada 0-6
Wright 3-6, 3B
Duda 0-3
Nickeas 2-3, 2B

Let’s Go Mets!

  • Again Collins sits Ike & Murphy, weakens the defense by putting Turner at 1B and he leaves Duda in RF when he could have Turner in RF and leave our infield defense in tact with Ike at 1B.

I’m getting sick of this guy destroying the lineup and the defense as well just because a lefty is pitching.

Leave the F*kin lefties in there!!!!!!!

    • The problem is our lefties have been downright awful against LHP all season. Wright and Tejada seem to be the only ones on the roster capable of hitting against the reverse side the rubber.

Once Wood comes out of the game, Ike will be put back in, but you can’t play him against lefties until he proves he can hit them. His numbers are worse than Nickeas!!!!

I do agree that Murphy should slide over to 1B considering he’s better (even defensively) over there…

      • You mean Murphy is better than Turner defensively at 1B, i’m sure you don’t mean he’s better than Ike Davis defensively

And if Collins is going to start the lefties against Cole Hamels and Lee Smith then why sit them vs. the Cubs? Ike has hit lefties before and the only way to get him out of this is to leave him in there every single day. And then he leaves Duda in there? Collins makes NO sense

        • I keep hearing this argument about “well he keeps leaving Duda in”

You (and the others) are forgetting that the Mets don’t have a 5th OF so he has to play everyday regardless of whether he deserves to or not. Duda doesn’t have a backup so he’s in there by default…

          • Turner can play RF, he can leave Murphy at 2B or Valdespin and leave Ike at 1B

Turner in RF makes more sense than anywhere else

            • Justin Turner playing the OF is not something you experiment with in the middle of a playoff race, especially with a flyball pitcher on the mound.

I think Turner playing 1B is almost as ridiculous though…

              • Tuner is no worse than Duda in RF and Tuner at 1B is not almost as ridiculous, it’s MORE ridiculous. Putting Turner at 1B and leaving Duda in RF makes it worse at 2 positions.

  • Johan deserves better than an infield of Turner, Cedeno and Nikeas

  • Since I know everyone is going to obsess over the lineup here are the reasons why Terry is forced to play his bench when a lefty is on the mound

    Ike: 167/.194/356/.549
    Kirk: .172/.273/.224/.497
    Murph: .252/.276/.333/.609
    Duda: .216 /270/.284/.555
    Thole: .250/.280/.333/.613

    Cedeno: .323/.382/.387/.769
    Torres: .266/.413/.375/.788

As you can plainly see the Mets have 2 bench players (3 if you include Hairston) that are clearly doing a better job than our regulars. I think it’s obvious that Torres should platoon with Kirk and Cedeno should replace one of the others.

Where Terry is wrong in his lineup is his use of Justin Turner (.192/.246/.250/.496) especially out of position. Turner is a reverse splitter who over his career has always hit RHP better. I think it’s also fairly obvious when you include defense that Ike > Turner

These are the best alignments for the Mets with this roster based solely on their numbers this season.

vs. LHP: Thole, Murphy, Cedeno, Tejada, Wright, Hairston, Torres, Duda
vs. RHP Thole, Ike, Murphy, Tejada, Wright, Valdespin, Kirk, Duda

After the all-star break we will know the status of Torres and whether he will be on the DL or not. I personally would use Spin against lefties in CF, but can understand Kirk for defense…

  • Makes no sense not to start Valdespin. Put him in the lineup regularly! I don’t care if it’s CF, LF, or 2nd base! He needs to be in there, not on the bench!

  • I like how Collins finds at bats for his guys. Wood has pitched well of late so giving Murph the day off and Cedeno a shot who has at least hit him in limited at bats is ok. The same with Nickeas who last time he faced him this year got 2 hits of Wood.

Torres bad back forces Kirk to play CF. I’d prob have given Duda the day off and not Ike but don’t have a problem with getting Turner some at bats at either position.

Collins lineups have come through more times than not all season. Hopefully they can do it again tonight.

    LGM!

  • And why did they screw with those beautiful blue jerseys?
Why change the lettering from orange to white?
What do they have against orange. I love the orange, it’s my favorite color.

  • Turner has never played one game in the OF, so putting him there today would be a disaster.

With three games left before the break, I’d keep the lefties in there, they can’t go all season avoiding them, they have to improve, only way to do that is in the game.

  • Well whatever reasoning you want to give for the lineup we put out there today two things should be considered in the Future….

1 – The righties don’t seem to be hitting any better against the lefties…
2 – the one lefty he left in hit a HR!

One other thing I would like to point out.

What happened to the playoff atmosphere? Cubs are in last place too!
