The Mets tried but just fell short of a comeback last night, but hope to take that energy in to today’s scorcher of a game as the Mets take on the Cubs for game two. If you were following yesterday’s game, the Mets were down by 4 runs in the bottom of the ninth and got three back before hitting into a double play. Today Dillon Gee will be taking on Jeff Samardzija.

Dillon Gee is 5-7 on the season with an ERA of 4.34 over 16 games and 101.2 innings of work. In his last six starts, Gee has had mostly bad luck. He is 1-4 in those starts, but has a better ERA than his season of 3.76. One of his bad starts in that stretch was against the Cubs where he allowed 4 ER over 5 innings. The Cubs have the following against Gee:

Barney 1-6
Castro 2-5
Soriano 1-5, 2B
Mather 1-3
DeJesus 2-3
Rizzo 2-3, 2B

Jeff Samardzija gets the call for the Cubs tonight. He is 6-7 with a 4.77 ERA this season over 16 starts and 94.2 innings of work. Jeff bounced back in his last start as he allowed one earned run over 7 innings of work. In the two previous starts he totaled 9.1 innings of work with 14 earned runs. One of those two starts was against the Mets were he allowed 4.1 innings with 9 ER. The Mets have the following numbers against Jeff:

Wright 1-4, 2B
Duda 1-3
Tejada 2-5, 2B
Davis 2-3, 2B, HR
Murphy 2-2, 2B, HR
