Two Homers Not Enough In 7-3 Loss To Reds, Mets Also Lose Bay To Injury

Mets came back home feeling good after sweeping the first place Rays. Dillon Gee tried to keep the ball rolling but he had no control and was getting batted all over Citi Field.
In the second inning, Gee gave up a lead-off inside the park home run to Jay Bruce after Jason Bay slammed into the left field wall chasing down the ball, hitting his head and neck. He came out of the game, able to walk on his own, but he was really woozy that he looked like he was going to collapse half way back to the dugout. He missed much of the 2010 season with a concussion he sustained barreling into the Dodger Stadium wall after a fly ball, and was on the disabled list this season after hurting his ribs diving for another ball. They say it’s a possible concussion, and after Bay’s concussion two years ago and Thole’s concussion earlier this year, you know they’re going to be extra cautious with Bay.
Continuing on, Hairston came in to play left and committed a throwing error as Gee gives up back-to-back hits and the Reds score again in the second. In the third inning, after losing control of his pitch and hitting Joey Votto in the side, he gives up a two-run shot to Brandon Phillips. Gee eventually strikes out and walks the next two batters and finally able to get a pop up to end the third.
Gee later settled in and finished the last ten batters cleanly to finally end his day. A rough start but it could have been worse. He finishes with four runs, but only three earned, on five hits, one walk, one HBP, a homerun, while striking out five in six innings of work. He went up to 100 pitches for just those six innings, increases his ERA to 4.43, and receives the loss.
At this point the Mets only had one hit through the first five innings until Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a lead-off solo-homerun to get the Mets on the board. His third in the last two games.
Jeremy Hefner came in, his first appearance in nine days. With one out and Arroyo, the pitcher, on first, Hefner gives up a double, but Arroyo was heading home with the throw coming into the infield and the Mets could have had him hung out to dry on the base path. However, there was no communication in the infield, so Quintanilla had no idea of the easy out, Arroyo got back to third and everyone was safe. Hefner then gives up a two-run double from former Met, Wilson Valdez, to give the Reds a five run lead. One inning, three hits, two runs for Hefner.
Not to be outdone by Kirk, Bay’s replacement, Scott Hairston, hits a two-run bomb into left field after Ike Davis gets himself a base hit. Atta boy Scotty! Afterwords, the Mets were able to get Bronson Arroyo out of the game, however, the Reds bullpen, who are the best in the league, threw three hitless innings against our Mets.
Elvin Ramirez pitches the eighth inning with no problem, but not the same story for the ninth. After a lead-off double from former Met and Met killer, Willie Harris, Ramirez gives up back-to-back hits and an RBI. He strikes out Votto with a backdoor slider, then gets Brandon Phillips to hit into a double play to retire the side.
Rounding out the little offense they had, the Mets score three runs on two hits with homers from Kirk and Hairston, and base hits from Ike and Wright. Ike also had a walk today, showing his patience has improved. His average now at .191. Murphy not so much with absolutely terrible at-bats, going 0-4.
Notes
As mentioned, Jason Bay left in the second inning after colliding with the left field wall. Possible concussion.
This day in Mets history, in 1977, the Mets traded Tom Seaver to the Reds for four players. This would later become one of the worst trades in Mets history.
Mets first and second draft picks in this year’s Amateur Draft, Kevin Plawecki and Gavin Cecchini, were at Citi Field today. They took batting practice with the team and Plawecki was hitting balls over the fence. Last time Cecchini was at Citi Field, was Johan’s no-hitter.
Mets hosted REO Speedwagon for a post-game concert. “[Mets We] Keep On Loving You.”
Game Ball
Kirk and Hairston, who without, we’d be shutout. Thanks boys.
Up Next
Niese tries to keep the long ball away from the Reds as he goes up against Homer Bailey. First pitch set for 7:15 PM on Fox.

An inside the park HR? Sigh
Don’t wish anyone ill so I hope Bay recovers fine from his bout with the wall. Having said that it seems like Bay just always is having some injury after hitting a wall. The 1st thing I though after the injury was see you next season Jason Bay. Waiting to hear how bad it is. After watching the replay like 4 times he really is lucky to walk away from that seeing how his neck went into the wall.
As far as the game it felt like it was over almost as soon as it started. Which has not been a typical feeling this season with this club. Hat tip to Capt Kirk. The kid is hitting some serious shots. Once again Hairston as well with a HR. Joe D said it a few posts ago. Have to give credit for staying with Hairston and bringing him back.
All that is left is to try and come back and win 2morrow.
LGM!
Lets hope he is ok…
He sure didn’t look ok.
Looks like Turner will be back in morning with Jason Bay expected to go on dl due to concussion.
Cant catch a break when I go to Citi Mets 0-3.
JayBay has been under perpetual cloud since coming to New York. So strange. When Reyes and Beltran would get injured, we were so concerned about holding the fort until they returned. When Bay gets injured, we seem more concerned about making as much progress developing his replacements before he gets back. So strange…
Murphy seems lost – at bat, his timing is off, on the basepath and in the field, he appears slow. He is not hitting with any appreciable power. Not good. Really.
In the plus column, Kirk is providing daily evidence of his overall baseball prowess and Ike really appears to be awakening. His individual at-bats seem much better – he’s reading the ball better pitch-by-pitch. He’s by no means near fulfilling his capability, but he’s moving in that direction.
Turner will be a much welcomed addition to our active roster.
Well it did feel that way Jersey when Bay hit the wall and a inside the park HR resulted, it seemed like Arroyo, who with all his lollipop pitches, just befuddled Mets and he has done this to Mets in past and with the young kids that hadn’t faced him it was tough cause he is very deceptive for a junk ball pitcher.
Too bad about Jason, here he hits a HR in Tampa and maybe his RH bat can add some balance to lineup and this happens, get well soon Jason.
Anyway, apart from Bay’s injury where is the balance going to come from in this LH heavy lineup apart from David and I don’t trust Hairston in OF cause he tends to have problems out there plus his bat is needed on bench.
Another game where BP comes in and allows runs, how many is that now, wow couldn’t Gee have gone another inning, he retired his last 10 batters TC? Just asking.
Maybe Turner can give Murph a day off against LH pitchers cause he is totally lost at the plate and he might need another day off.
Somebody get Bay the John Olerud fielding helmet.
Gee didn’t have it from the get go – too many balls up in the zone. Defense behind him didn’t help much either.
Anyone at Citi last night booing Bay needs to get their priorities straight. Something wrong with those people. And Kudos for Rauch taking those Met fans to task on Twitter while standing up for his teammate.
‘Very disappointed with the fans who booed Jason Bay as he came off the field. This is a serious injury that affects his livelihood and his well being. He plays his heart out every time he takes the field. It’s very unfortunate that he’s had to deal with multiple concussions and other injuries – we all have him and his family in our thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.’
Quite an embarrassing week to be a Mets fan. I don’t care how much you hate a player, when he wears the uniform with your team across his chest and clearly is hurt badly while going all out to make a play you don’t boo him.
Watching the replay of him coming off the field was down right scarey. How he stayed on his feet is beyond me.
Between this and the twitter BS with Rauch, it’s disgusting. Sad that people can’t decipher between a baseball and real life.
My thoughts and best wishes go out to Jason Bay. He apparently got his bell rung yet he still had the presence of mind to retrieve the ball and throw it back to the cutoff man. He goes all out defensively and has not let some offensive woes affect his defensive efforts.
Shame on the jerks who booed him while he was walking off the field. It seems that the Phillies ballpark is not the only locale where poor behavior is shown towards the home team.
Bad signing JayBay, guy still gives100% effort, his skills are probably shot, feel bad for him. Why do they always stink when we get them?
Mo Vaughan, Jeremy Burnitz, Bret Saberhagan, Bonilla, Vinnie Coleman, Brett Butler, Ollie, Castilla, george foster!!!
