TOTALLY R.A.D. – DICKEY THE CONQUEROR!
HE’S UNBELIEVABLE!
The Mets (34-29) demolished the Rays (35-27) for their second consecutive win tonight by the score of 9-1 in what may have been Dickey’s most spectacular performance as a Met and in his career.
Dickey faced just two batters over the minimum tonight in a scintillating performance, striking out 12 batters and allowing just one hit in a complete game masterpiece. He could have easily had himself a no-hitter if not for a questionable call on a mishandled grounder by David Wright, but it was a sensational game regardless.
Wright did get charged with an error to start the ninth inning, which resulted in the end to Dickey’s 32 2/3 inning scoreless streak, a new franchise record!
With the win, Dickey improves to an MLB best 10-1 for the season!
ALL SMILES!
The Mets scored nine runs thanks to a 14 hit attack that included big nights from Andres Torres who had three hits, and believe it or not two hits each from Daniel Murphy, Ike Davis and Mike Nickeas who were all struggling of late. This was great to see.
This was such an exciting game from beginning to end, and rather than nitpick, lets relish and enjoy this AMAZIN’ MOMENT!
All together now… LETS GO METS!!!

No way should this not be another no hitter for the Mets and R.A. Dickie. Wright clearly could have fielded the ball cleanly and made a play to first. It should have been charged as an error. A home town call that should be overturned on appeal.
I’ve seen all the knuckleballers since the days of Hoyt Wilhelm. During his current streak, RA Dickey is playing better than any of those guys. His control, K/BB numbers, H/9 and other figures bear this out. If he can keep going for a few years even remotely close to his recent performances, he’ll be an All Star and yes, a Hall of Fame candidate.
I agree with you about the Hall….I believe he is the best Knuckleball Pitcher that has ever been.
How many years of pitching do you think it will take minimum to get him in?
If Wright had taken the extra time to glove the ball and transfer, Upton would have beaten it out. He’s got turbo charged wheels. The only chance Wright had was to try and make the barehanded play.
Agreed and let’s not forget how good he is at making those bare handed plays to begin with.
Also agree. No way of knowing what might have happened had he taken the extra time to use the glove or actually fielded it cleaning with his bare hand.
I think that instead of making the “hit” or the loss of the shutout an issue we should concentrate on just how well the team has bounced back after a horrible weekend in the Bronx in that BANDBOX OF A BALLPARK. You really have to give credit to Terry Collins who keeps the guys fighting. We might even be seeing Ike Davis coming around at the plate now!
R.A. Dickey just keeps rolling and should be an All Star. What a find he has been for this team!
Heh. Anyone catch Wright’s post game comment where he got annoyed at the question and said if he knew it would be a one-hitter, he’d have tried harder. I literally laughed at the TV. I love it when players put down the Great Book of Sports Cliches and actually reward stupid questions with stupid answers.
God forbid anyone ask DW about his lack of effort during games right? i mean, he hurdles to first on EVERY ground ball, when he hits a pop up fly he’s in second base by the time the ball is caught etc…
SMH
Yeah, God Forbid anyone would make an iota of sense with a given criticism!
It was a clown question, bro.
My favorite quote from an athlete came out of the mouth of R.A. tonight: “I really enjoyed my craft tonight”. Stellar quote.
OK taking nothing away from Santana’s no-hitter which is in a category all to itself due to what it meant in Mets history but Dickey’s performance tonight was the most dominant pitching performance I have seen all season.
The man went all the way facing 2 more than the minimum one reaching on Wright’s inability to grasp a ball cleanly barehanded to get out a speedy runner and the other a throwing reaching on a error by Wright (more on that in a bit) later. Add setting a career high in strikeouts with 12 while setting a new Mets record for consecutive scoreless innings streak.
It was just insane watching what he did tonight.
Now on Wright. Wright is having an A-Star season and had gotten off to such a great start with the glove but lately his defense has slipped. Over his 1st 37 games he had made 1 error and over his last 22 games he now has 6 errors. Gotta pick it up Wright.
I can’t count the number of times Collins has submitted a lineup that had people scratching their heads only to see the players questioned deliver. Torres with 3 hits, Nickeas with a hit to put the Mets on top, Rottino with a double. This against a very good starter in David Price.
Oh and can it be that Ike Davis is finally coming around? Nice double by Davis. I need to see more as 4 games is not enough. He had a 5 game stretch back in late April where he looked to come out of it only to continue to slump but this time he is not striking out as much so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.
All the starters had at least 1 hit and 6 starters had at least 1 rbi. There is not much more to say except good job offense.
Mets go for the sweep 2morrow with Santana on the hill.
LGM!
It would been close, but after watching the replay a few times i think if he gloved it and threw to first cleanly, Upton is out.David’s throws on bang bang plays are usually true. When he has lots of time he gets the yips on throws.Does not matter, it is a one hitter and a much needed victory for the team
By the way before I forget. That is a “Great!” picture Joe D.
EXTENSION!!!!
Turbo charged wheels do you no good when you don’t use them. BJ Upton does not hustle all Wright had to do was glove the ball like normal and throw him out. BJ Upton would not have been hustling hard and most likely would have been thrown out. He dogged in CF late in the game jogging for that ball in RCF and he would have eased his way down the 1B line on that ground ball.
Instead Wright chooses to hot dog it. And for the cherry on top he ruined RA’s shutout AND his consecutive scoreless streak. When the reporters asked him about it Wright seemed indignant during the post game, almost defensive. And when the reporter asked him about the no hitter I would have answered that i don’t think i would have done anything different, i gave it my best shot and it didn’t work out. Instead Wright gave his real answer – “I could have tried harder”. He could have tried harder running out ground balls and also for anybody that didn’t notice he blatantly dropped the bat on a dropped 3rd strike and never ran. He did not budge and you can run to 1B on a dropped 3rd strike with 2outs and 1B occupied.
He blatantly dogged it. Running to 1B on a dropped 3rd strike and making the catcher throw the ball down the line can change a game, he can throw it away a lot of things can happen. But no – he dogged it. That’s not how you play baseball the correct way despite was his army of fans think. But excuse makers will be excuse makers in the name of their favorite players.
you ever here of sarcasm? you really think that was a serious answer? It was a snide comment to a silly question really. He did try hard. It was a judgement (bang bang) call where he had to react and decide how much time he had (and knowing it was a fast guy factors in). So he obviously decided tht the only way he could get the out was to barehand. If anything he did try too hard! the lazy play was glove and not get him.
Any, why waste your breath with this foul-mouthed Wright Hater?
You can count on this “expert” to post the exact same bile during and after any given game:
“Wright’s not clutch”;
“Wright’s not my kind of player”;
“Wright doesn’t play the game right”; and
“Wright has no respect for the game.”
I’m all for democracy on our MMO, but not when posters constantly use foul and abusive language towards others, especially in the “Let’s Talk Mets” instant messaging section. It’s just barrages of oafish, profanity-laden comments after the next.
I will speak to Joe D privately about addressing etiquette and language once again because the imbecility has got to stop.
Incidentally, “Hats off to Wright for always giving his all on the playing field, and playing the game the right way, playing like a Met.”
Beautiful victory. R.A. Dickey is a total gem! Can’t wait to read his book.
It’s just so predictable now, it’s not worth even countering with anymore. Hot Dog Move, seriously? That’s all you have to read to see how silly the typical comments are.
How about Ike Davis – Going into the game I don’t think most Mets fans thought he’d do a thing vs Price, but he really look pretty good. 2 for 3 and a walk. Seems promising………fingers crossed.
Hopefully it continues.
Oh, yes, if the real Ike Davis returns to that body, Kay, we will be in for a wonderful summer!
“I will speak to Joe D privately about addressing etiquette and language once again because the imbecility has got to stop.”
He can’t stop it’s what he does. He bullies every person that doesn’t agree with them. If that doesn’t work it leads to curses and h0m0phoblc slurs or der0gatory comments against women. For the people who are used to it, it’s just stale and and he ends up running away and taking a break for a while or using the victim card and it’s no skin off our back. Last night alone he called me a loser, a liar, and for me to keep quiet because I know absolutely nothing about how the game is played. I wasn’t even engaging him directly for the most part.
For new people that come here and just want to talk baseball, it’s embarrassing and a huge black eye for the site. Why would anyone want to comment again after going through that. Just look in there right now with some new guy (I’ve never seen him anyway ) “Mets Rule”. He doesn’t agree so he just keeps bullying him and tells him to go away because he knows nothing. Ask Angelo one of the more positive people on the site the crap that he has heard from him the last two weeks.
It’s great to now agree and it’s great to be passionate about your beliefs. That’s why we come to sites like this. To learn from each other and be Mets fans together. I know so corny but it’s true. Not to get insulted and bullied because we hold a different position. It’s pathetic. So flame away…..
I’m sorry, but I just read his comment here and I didn’t see anything “profanity-laden” in it. I didn’t see anything wrong with it at all.You can disagree with it if you want, but don’t try to make it into something that’s it’s not because you personally dislike the poster.
VB, you seem to be unaware of what we refer to. We are talking about the abusive and profanity-laced language the poster in question used during yesterday evening’s game in the Let’s Talk Mets section. If you can access his game-time disgusting language from last night, there will be absolutely no doubt what we’re addressing.
Keep the shoutbox issues in the shoutbox!
Dragging the conversation here does nothing but add permanance to the issue!
The Shoutbox convo eventually expires and is removed. Whats said here lasts forever!
Zanca comes in conveniently right after i admonish Wright for dropping the bat at homeplate and not running to 1B on a called 3rd strike…and with a runner already on base – he makes fun of the fact that I’m admonishing Wright as Zanca does in his usual style – i call him out for it and am disgusted by people who prefer to defend their favorite ballplayer than to stick up for how to play the game correctly then he STARTS if first by referring to me as a girlfriend of boyfriend or whatever context he uses it in. And you know if you want to play that game you’re going to get it back from me 10 times over and now he cries like the little baby that he is. That’s russell zanca, 40 year old crybaby who at times hoots and hollers on this comment board like a drunken upper deck fan.
And then right after Zanca comes in the salty guy comes in, and has violated the guidelines plenty of time with sarcastic, personal attacks out here and in the shout box. But when someone gives it back to them at levels they can’t handle they run and cry like they are the innocent parties.
I really don’t give a damn about folks like these. I grew up in a baseball environment and only hung out with intelligent baseball people and there are not many on this site, just a handful, so i have no patience to try and be a social worker in order to engage the other imbeciles like salty and drunken zanca who are people that in real life i would never travel in the same circles with.
It’s one of the reasons I stay out of the shoutbox Bay…
Too much of the bull everyone complains about when it is here goes on over there and then gets carried over…
JoeD should make a rule that no mention of anyone NOT in shoutbox should be permitted IN the shoutbox and no arguments from the shoutbox should be used as a basis for comments unless what is said in that shoutbox is also repeated in the commentary! Conversations in the shoutbox about comments made by people in it are just fine!
It’s almost impossible to enforce and people are people they will respond based on all history not just what people say as a comment but I bet 99.9% of the arguments and User Snarking would go away if those rules were applied and people were judged by their response to what is said in a comment as opposed to things said elsewhere in other threads and other days in the Shoutbox.
A lot of people claim innocence and play the “Well He Started It!” game which I has bored most people since they were about 4 years old!
You have a right to bitch about Wright all you want as far as I’m concerned…I don’t agree with all of it, there is such a thing as being OVER exhuberant and hustling too much. Think of all the foibles Murphy had last year trying to do too much and more than the routine.
Not everyone plays the game the way Pete Rose did. Considering the fact Wright isn’t actually what you would call a fast runner even if he busted it on every GB chances are he would get more pulled hammys than singles in the end.
But you have every right to expect more…I just am happy with the high BA, Good Power potential and if I have any knock on him lately is he has slipped a little with the glove. But truth is not any more than usual for him.
He is what he is! Still better than a lot of other guys playing the game.
Yeah and if David could have used some moves like Yoda he could of levitated and thrown it while on his back while smiling
David know BJ better than we do, he grew up with him and knows how fast he runs, and saying that cause BJ has not hustled at times meant that that particular play was a non hustle play for him, says who?
David’s only play with ball going toward 3B line was to bare hand it as he has many times to make great plays, this time it didn’t work and score keeper can not use “for instances” to judge error vs hit.
If he grabs it with glove and it bounces off glove or he drops it then you could say error but if a 3B decides to “not” use his glove then the fact that he didn’t catch and throw is a hit not an error, no different than if when David makes all those bare handed grabs on bunts, slow hit balls etc so no error, base hit and let’s take a win and not spend hours and hours over error vs hit cause the game was one to watch this season for RA along with his most recent starts.
What RA does to opposing hitters is not nice with his re-invented “hard” knuckle ball that sets him apart so far from other knuckle ball pitchers from the past.
I wish RA another 100 wins, at least, in his career cause is a good man who rose up from a terrible childhood, was told he had no ulnar in his arm but pushed ahead when told to re-invent himself and he did and here he is ready to start AS game in KC.
I say he should start over Strassberg or come in after him because what his pitch does would totally confuse the AL hitters as it has this season.
Awesome back to back wins after the shellacking we took at “new” Yankee Stadium and just goes to show, I complained about today’s lineup also, that sometimes you don’t know the heart of a team until they have been left for dead, call imposters, a team on the decline, etc.
TC has given this team a toughness that makes them fun and exciting to watch.
Can’t presume an out on that play. Official scorer ruled it a hit, so a hit it was and always shall be. I think R.A. is above backing in to a no-hitter in that way. He’ll have plenty of other opportunities.
By the same token, Santana’s no-hitter is sanctified in my book. Whether the ball scrapes the chalk or not, whether it had back spin that kicked up chalk or landed cleanly on the line, the ump made the call in-game and then it was on to the next play. The Cardinals* had plenty of other opportunities to get a hit and did not. Who knows – maybe Santana got squeezed earlier in Beltran’s at-bat and he should have been struck out.
Bottom line: Santana has a no-hitter and Dickey does not. In truth, Dickey pitched the better game, but as we know, a player’s performance doesn’t always correlate to his statistical performance.
One thing I do know is that Nickeas sucks. I don’t care if that guy managed two hits. He grounded into a double-play in a crucial situation and failed to take 2nd base on an overthrow, which cost us a run. Aaaannnnd, he and Wright brought RA’s veritable scoreless inning streak to an end.
Sorry for the gratuitous remarks, but Dickey pitched a wonderful one hitter last night. I’ll take it.
Great performance by RA Dickey. What more can you say about him?
Offense explosion 2 nights in a row. Looking at the lineup going in, who would have thought?
I cannot believe there are Met fans actually ‘blaming’ Wright for this game not going down as a no hitter.
these are not Mets fans dude, more fans of themselfs and their great little league careers ….
Mets will appeal scoring, ask for no-hitter
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/48512/mets-will-appeal-scoring-ask-for-no-hitter?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
hard to believe they will win, but like in sales, if you don’t ask, you won’t get!
Here’s a fuller quote of what David had to say on fielding the grounder:
“I tried to make the play and I didn’t make it,” Wright said. “I don’t think I could have gotten him with the glove and I tried to bare-hand. It hit the lip and skipped on me and I didn’t make the play. If they want to go back and give me an error they can do that.”

Gosh, if only David could benefit from the advice of a certain poster. NYUK!
Russell, it was an error… Only in 1917 a play like this was overturn… I hope it happens again.
I’ll take your word for it that only once in MLB history has a play like this been over turned.
That doesn’t bode well for this appeal from the Mets, does it?
I’m certainly not arguing the error allegation tooth-n-nail; my point is why vilify a man for doing everything pssible to make the play. To err, after all, is human
by the Way, it’s not only the reported asking that question, it seems mets brass wanna charge DW with an error to get dickey the no hitter.. HMMMMMMM…..
The season lasts 162 games.Anybody who watches the Mets knows Wright can get you crazy with the bad throws. They also know he will make some amazing plays on dives into the hole and charging swinging rollers that will save games.Over the course of a season he will make more good plays than bad.Anybody who hates the guy will use this as an excuse to knock him.I think if you do, you are just showing how ignorant you are.
My laugh of the day is provided by last night’s on-line chat:
“Wish we could have Bayonne as a Manager: but lets be honest he would be ejected every first inning for talking crap to the ump, but hey, he could HUSTLE to the dogout EVERY time.”
Why just as a manager? For several days a while back, he was claiming he a couple of his buds could do better job than Sandy. I guess his talent is unappreciated by the masses. This is sometimes true of the ‘great ones.’
What a game! I dont think Wright cost him the no-hitter, but he certainly cost him the shutout. BUT! This is and always will be team game, and the team won! There’s been plenty og games where Wright preserved a great game by the pitcher with his defense.
Actually, if you want to “blame” someone for blowing the shutout, blame Nickeas.
Wright let a guy get on 1st. Dickey then did not let up a hit or a walk. The guy scored on an out, after moving up on 2 PBs.
I know a knuckleball can be hard to handle, but if the catcher does not make those 2 PBs shutout intact.
Wright haters coming out in full force today. He blatantly dogged it? Oh please!
Do we need to put an asterix after the 1 Hitter to make everyone happy?
Considering the circumstances that got you a no hitter just be happy and leave well enough alone!
Metsie — good advice.
To me Des seeing the performance is the kick not how it got recorded in the record books!
The only relevance the record book has is 20 years from now the game might get mentioned again and I could say YEAH I SAW IT!
Thats about all the record book is really good for as far as I’m concerned.
