3 strikeouts for Murph and now we get to see him against a tough lefty, how about 3 more strikeouts?
I thought Young was going to lose in 1st but thankfully 3B coach of Rays held up a runner that could of scored and kept it at 2-1 instead.
Young did grind it out and really impressed as he got faster as game went on and Rays could not figure him out.

Hairston alone will probably get 4M with the year he is having!
He currently makes 1.1M if I’m not mistaken (No I didn’t double check)

Other notable re-ups are:

Wright – Of course this will be the biggest check we cut!

Dickey – (has an option wants a contract to end his career and feels he has earned it…I do too) add another 5-6 Mil per to the payroll.

Pelfrey – they will have to make a decision on him one way or the other. He pitched so well before he got hurt do you just let him walk for nothing? There is another 5 Mil in Arbitration unless they walk away from him

Byrdak – is also FA I suspect he will be resigned.

The others are probably not worth reupping including:
Ramirez
Rauch
Torres (Arb Eligible)

Bay has much less of a chance. Bay’s been mired in his funk for three seasons, Davis for just two months and showing signs of coming out of it.

I actually think long-term when he is in his best position might be a #7 or #8 hitter in a Jose Lopez or Jose Valentin mold. Even with last nights break out he has some pretty rough numbers.

I was thinking the same thing. It went right over his head. One of the reasons payroll went down so quickly this year was the cost of the replacements and next year they may have some tough decisions to make. Just because a team doesn’t spend a boatload of money and try to get established AS at every position doesn’t mean they are being cheap.

What if next year it’s a combination of Hairston, Kirk, DenDek, and Duda in the OF? How much money does that OF cost? 4M?

What about the IF? Davis, Murphy/Farm, Tejada, Wright? What are you improving on there?

You going out and spending a bunch of money on 2B? If Ike still stinks you are replacing him with Duda most likely.

Catcher is a good spot to improve on but you are most likely looking for a decent backup, not much money there.

Starting rotation? Johan, Dickey, Niese, Gee, Harvey, Wheeler, maybe you try to re-sign Young?

Maybe you spend money on the bullpen but that’s a crap shoot no matter what anyone says. They spent money there this off-season to no avail. And besides you are not going to see the Mets go out and spend 60M on a closer.

Thus with what they have and what is coming up obviously there are still weakness but where are you breaking the bank? At best I see a RH RF with Power if they unload Bay or Ike continues to struggle, re-signing Young and then rebuilding the pen again.

you completely missed the point. No one was rooting for payroll. SImply that they were getting production out of younger (hence cheaper) guys, and there could be some more of that help coming, to replace and improve upon the overpaid anchors like Bay.

Valdespin drives in 4 at the #2 spot? No surprise. That should be his permanent spot in the lineup. Ike Davis looked like he finally showed up tonight. Keep the trend going. I was worried about Young early on because he had trouble with his breaking stuff, but I’m glad he labored through 5 2/3 innings. I wish we could blowout games more frequently like the Mets did last night.

Everyone hits tonight, except Bay.

Lots of talk about Ike these past 2 months but now that Bay is back, which one do you think has less of a chance to get back on track? Don’t know about you all, but my money is on Bay.

You have to tip your hat to Young tonite and give him props for getting through his early struggles without giving in and giving it all up!

Thank god for the run barrage even our pen couldn’t blow that large a lead!

And as far as Ike is concerned I want it pointed out who was the one who preached patience with him! LOL

Over the last 7 games he is hitting .333 .524 OBP .667 SLG

so you’re equally concerned about the payroll AND the wins? You really think the wins are going to increase because the payroll is going down? Where you worried about that as you screamed and yell and rooted like heck during the exciting times of 06-08 when the team was GOOD and contending?

I don’t think you were. And payroll had nothing to do with the final results, performance of the players who were good enough to go to the post season was what mattered.

I don’t care WHAT they do w/the payroll – whether they sign a star pitcher for 25 cents or 25 million.

Just do what you need to do to win. That’s it.

Glorious night on many fronts. It shouldn’t go unnoticed that Valdespin and Nieuwenhuis reached base in 6 of their 10 plate appearances, scoring 3 runs and driving in 4. I think the Rays got some of their own home-grown medicine tonight.
I could realistically see the Mets’ payroll continue to plummet and the wins continue to increase. Great young talent in the near future.
Hope the Rays can’t hit knuckleballs

Hello Mr Ike Davis longtime no see.

It’s a much needed win on what has been a bad road trip. Going to wait a few more starts to better get a sense of Young. I keep thinking about how he was going to pitch 2 more starts at AAA before joining team and then those plans were changed but hopefully he gets stronger with every passing start.

I will say while I am happy for what Ike did tonight (obviously) that bunt single was something I did not want to see. I don’t care about the shift. In the 2nd inning down 1 run I want Ike swinging the bat trying to hit a extra base hit not bunt. I want to believe Collins did not call for that bunt. I’d be disappointed to hear him say he called for that.

Good win now let’s do it again 2morrow.
