Mets Matters: Enough With The Whipped Cream Pies, Of Course Dickey Should Start ASG

A collection of random Mets thoughts for today…

  • After sitting last night against Andy Pettitte, Daniel Murphy is expected to start today against the Yankees’ Ivan Nova tonight. Depending how he does will determine if he’ll start tomorrow against CC Sabathia. Murphy has been in a tailspin for weeks, especially against left-handers. For awhile, Terry Collins stuck with him, but the Mets have been getting mileage from their bench. Last night Justin Turner delivered a two-run single off Pettitte in the first.
  • Speaking of Turner, he’s been adept at delivering with two outs. He’s more than a serviceable player. What I’d like to see from him is to drop the tired act of a whipped cream pie to the face of a player being interviewed. Like the Gatorade bath, it has run its course. The who thing was designed as a way to haze rookies, but to smear RA Dickey after a one-hitter is ridiculous. It’s a Little League stunt.
  • National League All-Star manager Tony La Russa said Dickey is in line to start the All-Star Game in Kansas City. One of the interesting things to look forward to at the Game will be the response to Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran, who began his career with the Royals. He was welcomed last night and had good things to say about his career in Kansas City.
  • The Mets had some fun with Frank Francisco regarding his Yankees’ “chickens” comments. A lot of it was sophomoric, but it does show a good and tight chemistry in that clubhouse. For a long time it has been a divided room, but that’s not the case this year.
  • Chris Young, who is recovering from the same type of shoulder surgery as Johan Santana, will start tonight against Nova. Young has pitched well since returning to the rotation in what was Mike Pelfrey’s spot. If he just keeps giving the Mets five or six innings until he’s fully recovered they should be in good shape.
  • Another strong inning for Bobby Parnell last night. He’s been consistent in his bridge role. Not to rush things, because we’ve been here before, but if he continues like this the closer role might eventually become his.
  • Word is Jason Bay is making progress in his recovery from another concussion. There’s no need to rush him with the bench playing so well.
  • Jon Niese pitched out of trouble in both the first and second innings last night, which was a key to the victory. So many times with the Mets – even after being staked to a lead- we’ve seen Niese and others give it right back to the Yankees.

Enjoy the game and Lets Go Mets!

  • I hate those cream pies and they ruined Johan Santana’s moment in the spotlight with one when he threw the no-hitter. Now the only pictures of him celebrating the Mets first no-hitter look like he just came out of a Roman Orgy during the rein of Caligula.

    • i agree, i thought it was totally disrespectful of Turner to hit Santana with a pie during such a historic Mets moment. I like Turner but if I was Santana i would have turned around and smacked him in the back of his head on National TV if he did that to me.

I’m sick of the stupid pies too how about celebrating like professionals.

      • Agreed wholeheartedly with the two of you. What are we, the Yankees? Quit the childish cream pie shit!

  • Pies are kids’ stuff but we have bigger issues to deal with. If we never had another pie, or if we continually have them, so be it.

    • If we have gotten to the point where a point is being made about seeing too many pie in the face celebrations then the Mets must be doing well so I hope this continues to be a point of contention all season long.

      LGM!

      • MNJ — You’re a wise man who is thinking out of the box. I agree with you but I just don’t feel strongly about the practice. I guess it’s just an example of ‘boys will be boys, and sometimes men will be boys.’

  • I don’t like the pies either – enough already.

There’s a few weeks yet left to play before the ASG. Dickey should be a shoe in for the NL staff. As far as starting, If he dominates in his next few starts the honor should go to him. No matter when he comes in to pitch though, I don’t envy the catcher behind the plate. It’s not going to be either one of ours…..hope they know what they’re doing trying to catch that knuckleball.

    • What a freakin crime. These players really have their nerve having some fun. Thank goodness there are people here who put them in their place!!!!!

  • I want to make a guess that you were born sometime before 1970?

I could care less about the pies. Let them have fun and stop over analyzing everything. A major flaw of the “baby boomer generation”

  • I don’t like them either, I was hoping that RA would not get “pied” when being interviewed but it showed up and I’m one that is tired of this.
Respect the moments when RA and No Han do their thing, if you want to continue it with the younger ones, I bet Turner couldn’t reach up to Young’s face to pie him!

I like Turner but enough is enough, David needs to quietly ask him to pick his moments.

I say start RA for 2-3 innings then bring in Cain, Strassberg, whomever cause they will have an advantage after RA’s dancing knuckle ball plus winning the ASG is important so I think, as TC has done in some series he starts RA and sets up other team to re adjust to regular pitches.

  • The pies to the face are a joke and not funny.

  • I just hope the mets don’t trade R.A. Because right now he’s no 1 on the mets pitching staff, the mets do need a pitcher for down the stretch and one more arm in the pen, trade bay if they can cause we need right hand pop in the line up, we are leaving too many men on base again and we need to pick up those runs. Even a bunt to try is better than striking out. Pickup a vet cather with some pop too would not hurt.
