Mets Lead NL With 8 Shutouts, Valdespin Is Hot, Duda Blasts His 11th Home Run

Here are some notes from the Mets on last night’s game. There’s some good stuff happening here…

SCORELESS STREAK: The Mets have tossed 22.0 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the sixth inning on June 17…It’s the third scoreless streak this season of 20 or more innings by New York’s staff…The club’s season-high is 28.0 shutout frames from May 25-28, while the team also posted 25.0 scoreless innings from June 1-3.

SHUTOUTS: The Mets posted their eighth shutout of the year…New York leads the NL in shutouts and is second in the majors…Entering tonight, the Angels had nine shutouts.

BACK-TO-BACK SHUTOUTS: New York has now recorded back-to-back shutouts for the third time this season after blanking the Birds twice…The Mets shut out San Diego, 9-0 on May 26 and then won 2-0 over the Padres on May 27…The Mets shut out the Cardinals 8-0 on June 1 (Santana’s no-hitter) and 5-0 on June 2.

JOHAN SANTANA: Has won two straight starts for the second time this year…Also won back-to-back starts May 26-June 1…Johan Santana is now 4-1 with a 1.16 ERA (seven earned runs/54.1 innings) at home (eight starts)…Entering tonight, he was fourth in the NL in home ERA.

DAVID WRIGHT: Extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the fourth-inning…Wright is hitting .324 (12-37) during that span…This is Wright’s third hitting streak this season of 10 or more games…Wright joins Baltimore’s Adam Jones and San Francisco’s Angel Pagan as the only three players in the majors with three separate hitting streaks of 10 or more games…Wright also hit in 10 consecutive games from April 5-20 and in 10 games from April 24-May 4.

LUCAS DUDA: Singled in the fourth-inning and hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning…Duda has reached base safely in a career-high 22 straight games dating back to May 27…Duda has at least one hit in 16 of his last 19 games.

HOME RUNS: Lucas Duda leads the team with 11 home runs…Duda’s blast was a “new” Citi Field home run, meaning the ball cleared the new dimensions but would not have been a home run last year…The Mets have 11 “new” Citi Field home runs while the opposition has nine.

SPIN CITI: Jordany Valdespin is hitting .333 (8-24) with seven runs scored, three doubles, one triple and eight RBI in his last eight contests.

  • I like this article and format, especially the “new” Citi Field home run stats!

    • Hi Hog,

Wonder what the total run production for the Mets versus the opponents is with the new Citi Field home run stats.

One stat we might not ever know is how many base hits the players got that would have been fly outs in the older park dimensions – i.e., balls hit close to or off the wall that might have been caught on the run by fielders now being a split second cautious approaching the wall (like with poor Jason, had the wall been further back he probably would have caught it and not have smashed in his head).

Agree with Chris about the mental aspect of those big walls and distances just not being there anymore.

  • It’s amazing how low scoring is in baseball these days.

The Mets have scored 306 runs in 69 games. THIRD in the NL and on a pace for 718 runs scored.

Here’s how 718 runs scored would rank in the NL in the 1990′s (excluding shortened seasons)

    4th 1990
    3rd 1991
    1st 1992
    9th 1993
    12th 1996
    10th 1997
    10th 1998
    12th 1999

    • It’s not all that amazing really…
It’s because they test for drugs now where before they didn’t!

      • Metsie is right.

Compare that figure to those of the early eighties.

1980 – third (20 less than the league leading Cardinals).

1982 – third (21 less than the league leading Braves playing half their games in that launching pad in Atlanta).

1983 – third (28 behind the league leading Braves).

1984 – third (44 behind the league leading Cubs).

1985 – third (29 behind the league leading Cardinals)

1986 – fourth (65 behind the league leading NEW YORK METS!).

We were third then (we can’t count ourselves twice in 1986) and hopefully we will be third again now.

Which does once again (sorry gang) raises the question of what does the use of relief specialists brought in for specific rules today really accomplish other than tired arms in the bullpen, less bench strength due to more roster spots taken by relievers and more blown leads in the late innings?

        • *** meant to say we COULD HAVE BEEN third then and hopefully we will be third now.

  • Good article, the mets SP has been very, very good, the staff led by Dickey and Santana have been amazing to say the least, problem has been that pathetic bullpen of ours, including the 3 stooges Sandy brought in… combined the bullpen have blown 13 games, they have lost 15 games and have a 5.32 ERA. pathetic… but hey, Sandy had a good day, let’s not harp on his desicions ok… SMH
Also, the mets offense have been like a roller coasters, they have their ups and down, they do not have any speed nor have any power, or at least from anyone else not named duda, yet, somehow we are #3 in RS in the NL, that is an amazing stat if you ask me… Either we’re good on scoring runs, or the other teams (Most likely) in the NL are that bad offensively… Either way, let’s hope IKE DAVIS have turn the corner for good and helps carry the weight along with duda and #5…

  • The “New” Citi Field home run stats are interesting. I knew that it would help the Mets hit more, but I worried that it would help the opponents hit more too. It’s good to see that it has helped the Mets a little more than the other guys. I think some of that may be more mental than just the distance. That big wall is not in their heads any more.

  • The new dimensions have certainly helped our cause this season. It made Wright more relaxed and he has reverted back to his pre-CF form. We’re not getting out-homered like some had feared. And the Mets have a great winning record at home. We finally have home field advantage again.

  • Good article like the formant.

David has a 10 game hitting streak but it is a weak hitting streak, where are the power numbers for David.
I know he wasn’t going to hit .350 all year but where are the 2B’s and HR plus with, it seems, less batters on in front of him or it might be more, he does not have the RBI I believe he should.

Ramires for Brewers, 42 and Freese 43, for Cards have more RBI though they are both hitting under .270 and David does have an OPS over 1.000 but where are the RBI I am asking?

One stat I do like about David is his walks to K’s, he has 43 walks and only 35, amazing considering how last year went.

Lets not forget to continue to vote for David on AS team, he should have a 500,000 vote margin over all others.

    • I agree Wright don’t hit for much power this season and doesn’t really hit with RISP And he don’t hit late in games. He only have 6 RBI’s more then Ike Davis despite hitting almost double his batting average. Duda have more RBI’s then wright hitting a whole .100 less.
