Which begs the question why did they even look for bench when they should have just decided to start one of those kids (a decision they eventually made) and leave Torres or Bay on the bench to PH
They knew full well going in they had:
Duda
Davis
Thole
Murphy
in the everyday lineup!

Wright
Bay
Tejada

Only CF was unknown with Torres (S) penciled in…
So no matter what they were lefty hefty from the get go…
So why didn’t they go after a RH OF instead of a LH one?
Considering Bay’s bat has ben gone for years and all of the best prospects are LH guys why not go for an OF who could demote either Torres or Bay to bench instead?

When the majority of your starters (and best projected hitters) are LHH you don’t need a lot of LH hitters to PH late in games! What you need are more RH PHs to PH for the Pitcher and Bay once the lefty has come in to face one of those big LH bats!

Yep they were looking for Bench which is all they seemingly have done for two years!
And it’s failed them because everyone who has any clue about building a team is you build it from the starters down not the bench up!

You want to strengthen the bench the best way to do that is strengthen the starting linup and use what got replaced as your bench!

We knew we would be LH dominant but we had Hairston for RH. They needed a plain LH bat for PH because you didn’t want to call up a prospect to be the LH bat off the bench. Baxter was perfect for that role.

Better question to ask…
Why did we waste an entire month looking for a LH Bat to come off the bench if we were really this thin on RH bats?

I mean Tejada is the only RH bat we lost (I don’t count Bay as a bat at all if your wondering) so what killed all our RH hitting depth?

I have no problem with a few platoon guys like hairston. Another everyday guy of course would be wonderful, but take what you can get!

just the way it worked out.

If lagares had been the one to have the monster start, it would be less of an issue.

but, for sure they need some RH support for the OF rotation. I have no problem with a ST veteran platoon type (like Hairston) for the job. Because that is one serious LH heavy line up (not even factoring in Ike (hopefully!) and the 2B options. And catcher.

wright and tejada are not quite enough RH support.

so, maybe the 2B that replaces Murphy can be a RH bat? Sadly, I am giving up on ever seeing havens (another lefty!)

You are right he deserves the call up and could easily slot in next year in CF with Newie in RF and hopefully Duda in LF.

time to send DD up to Buffalo to see how he handles the crafty veteran ML pitchers that tend to collect up there. Be a good test/practice so he can be ready to compete for the CF next ST. That job should be wide open for the taking.

and he can bring a couple of SPs up with him.
