And what if Young gets hurt next month?

Thats the problem with What Ifs...

Young has no future here...Harvey, Flores, Mejia, Beato and Familia do!

Your never going to get ,more for Young as you can get for him now.

And I think you need to look at Young's record just a little closer because he has pitched 5 games and has won less than half of them!
2 of them he might have won if only we had a middle relief to hold the game.
And that is true for most of our starters as well. So whatever you think you would lose from Young would be gained by not blowing games when the other 4 guys are pitching!

What good is that quality pitching going to be if the Middle Relievers blow thier good work?

You agree that the Pen is the main problem here do you not?

Well what would you rather trade to get some?

Flores? Mejia? Familia?

Or Young?

As was said in this piece, Harvey is mowing down batters and dominating in AAA.
If that is not an indication that he is ready then what is?

Young is way more disposable as he has no future on this team and in this rotation. Sure he is doing well and better than we expected. Well that means 2 wins in 5, 1 loss attributable to him and 2 losses attributable to the Pen!

So whatever you think your getting from young nearly 50% of the good he brings is ruined by the pen!

Trade him for better pen (Middle Relief) and you not only make that 5th rotation spot better but you improve and get more wins on all those good starts from Gee, Neise and the others as well!

He is the most expendable and probably the most valuable position we could part with and still do what we are doing.
All because Harvey appears to be ready if what he is doing in AAA is any indication and Young is not in any plan we might have past October!
He won't even Pitch in the Playoffs should we make it because Dickey will pitch on short rest instead.

Your playoff rotation would be:
Santana
Dickey
Day Off
Niese
Dickey
Santana
Day off
Gee (or Niese again)
Dickey

Young has pitched great no one denies that...
But that only makes him more valuable in a trade and less costly to trade for the now and the later to us!

Certainly less costly than anyone else your going to trade to get middle reliever.

The bottom line is this: it's a terrible business decision to give up a quality veteran starter in favor of someone who's never thrown a pitch in the majors when your team is in a pennant race. What if they gave up Young and Harvey came up only to get knocked around? Whatever return we got for him wouldn't make up for his loss in that case. If he leaves after this season, it's not an insurmountable loss. If the situation I just described happens, it'd be a complete nightmare.

They sure aren't going to resign him with Harvey in the wings. So it's now or never with Young.

Few notes:

-When is Armando Rodriguez getting his well-deserved promotion?
-Elvin & Beato are gonna be nice additions to our pen as we go down the stretch. Call it a hunch.
-Note to Joe D: Don't you mean Rafael, not Miguel Montero?
-Evans is gonna be a star. I've had a feeling about him since we drafted him.

The only way I'd trade someone from the current rotation at this point in time is if we get another stopper just to be on the safe side. Then by all means, maybe we can start thinking of a Harvey callup. I've always seen Young as trade bait and Gee could mean a nice return the way he's improved his stuff this season. I want to see 4 more starts from Harvey and see if he can dominate the way he did in this past start. All signs are looking good.

I look at guys in the upper minors (at least the ones considered "real" prospects) basically have a check list of things they need to work on and master. And once they have them all checked off, then they are ready to come up for final finishing in the majors.

so IMO rushing is not a function of time, as much as it is cutting corners on the checklist.

some guys are just ready sooner than others, but once they have shown they are, call them up!

that's why I thought considering Harvey out of ST would have been rushing, but if he can put together a few more outings like this, then no, not rushing.

Not sure though about trading another SP as long as the mets are in the race though. Really leaves them exposed though in case someone else goes down. But, usually those clogs take care of themselves.

I wouldn't trade any of the starters. Why? It took a while to finally put together a solid end of the rotation and now you have to break it up? I would ride the Gee/Young wave as long as it goes. ..

I mean, if Harvey comes up to the big leagues and proves he is legit, then that's a nice thought, but it's a little too early for that.

Poor Wally....He seems to be his own worst enemy as far as keeping talent around on his Roster! LOL

We all tend to agree that we should not Rush Harvey but lets also face facts, if he keeps dominating the way he has it is probably worth asking what you can get for a guy like Young and Gee at the deadline since harvey seems to be showing everyone that bringing him up wouldn't be as much a rush as we think it would have been before.

You could possibly trade a Young for two middle relievers for the pen. He isn't ours next year anyway and there are a lot of teams (notably Colorado but I'm not sure we want anyone from their pen) who could use a reliable starter and might give up two middle relievers (one from the MLB squad and a Minor Leaguer)

It's something worth considering if Harvey is really showing MLB readiness.

Everyone expects Harvey to be in the rotation starting next year so really bringing him up 3 months sooner can't really be defined as much of a RUSHING if you ask me.

Here are a few quotes by Backman on Harvey’s performance.

“The way that Harv threw tonight, that was a big-league guy on the mound tonight – and on a good night,” said Buffalo manager Wally Backman. “He commanded the strike zone, threw the secondary stuff for strikes and it was the best I’ve seen his changeup.”

“He overpowered hitters,” Backman said. “The thing that was most impressive to me was that a lot of secondary stuff that he threw was strikes and they’re swinging and missing in the strike zone. That’s a big thing for the next level.”

The one walk is the most encouraging stat from Harvey's outing. It sounds like he's pretty close to being ready for the show. I'd love to see him break camp next year as the #5 starter.

Also nice to see Flores continue to rake.
