Mets Game Preview & Lineup: The ‘Spin Is In As Mets Look For The Sweep!

Valdespin gets a rare start against a left-hander tonight.

Starting Lineup

  1. Andres Torres – CF
  2. Jordany Valdespin – 2B
  3. David Wright – 3B
  4. Scott Hairston – RF
  5. Vinny Rottino – LF
  6. Ike Davis – 1B
  7. Justin Turner – SS
  8. Mike Nickeas – C
  9. Dillon Gee – RHP

The Mets go for the sweep of the Orioles tonight at Citi Field! Johan Santana followed up Dickey’s performance by a 6.0 inning shutout that was kept up by a flawless bullpen performance. The Mets bullpen was given some breathing room by Duda, who in the bottom of the sixth sent out his 11th homer of the season. Dillon Gee will look to keep that going tonight as he faces Brian Matusz.

Dillon Gee is 4-5 on the season over 13 starts and 83.1 innings of work with a 4.43 ERA. In his last four starts he is 0-2 over 26.2 innings of work with a 3.38 ERA. As you could probably guess, since Gee made his debut back in 2010, Dillon has never faced the Orioles and he has never faced any current members of the Orioles roster. In this sense, he is a mystery.

On the other side of the diamond tonight is Brian Matusz who is 5-7 on the season over 13 starts and and 71.0 innings of work with an ERA of 4.94. Gee is 1-3 in his last four starts pitching 21.0 innings with an ERA of 5.14. He is 0-1 against the Mets as he has made one start against the Amazin’s where he pitched 8.0 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 earned runs. The Mets have the following numbers on Brian:

Davis 0-3
Hairston 0-3
Wright 0-3

  • Poor Matusz. Could’ve been a very good LHP, but they rushed him up WAY too soon and well…he stinks. That’s just being nice. This is why you need to temper your excitement a bit for big time prospects and let them develop. Same can be said for Rick Porcello. Regardless, we got this series in the bag. If we don’t, BIG disappointment, especially going into Round 2 Vs the Yankees (in a legit park).

    • On a side note, if I was Baltimore, I’d think about the possibility of moving Matusz to the bullpen as a lefty specialist. He’s been very good vs LHB (2009: .200, 2010: .218, 2012: .176, Career: .225). It’s the righties that has always killed him. If you wanna somewhat resurrect his career and give him value, go down that route.

  • Our lineup is giving me the shakes, but let’s see if guys like Vinny, Mike, and Big Red Turner can help.

Sure would be great to see Gee pitch really well for a change.

Isn’t Nickeas do for another Granny?

  • David Wright jogging. David Wright jogging on a dropped 2 out FB. If David Wright was on base instead of Mark Texeira when Castillo dropped that ball the Mets maybe don’t lose….just making a point.

Mark Texeira runs HARD from 1b..and on a popup to 2B no less! And it’s dropped, he scores, they win.

David Wright JOGS on a flyball to CF. I guess he would have simply walked or skipped if it was a popup to 2B.

David Wright jogs. He always jogs. He should have a long career because he’s always “jogging”.

    • Seriously why are you even a Mets fan?

What do you get out of it?

I hope the Mets lock Wright up for 10 years just so I can watch you hate the team’s best player for another 10 years.

    • Yeah, well, it was one out, and there’s a reason to run cautiously. I suppose in your fantasy coaching world you tell your players on base to run hard toward home on a one-out popup. Goodness, can’t imagine why you aren’t better known for your baseball acumen.

      • Bayonne, I apologize to you. You are right, and I was wrong. There were two outs.
