I’ve read a lot of scouting reports on Cecchini since draft day and like you, Jeter comes to mind. Let’s remember that when the Yankees drafted Jeter, the state of the Yanks wasn’t that far to how the Mets are now, coming off a few losing seasons. Some have projected Cecchini to be a .280-.290 hitter with 15+ HR power. I’ll take that from a shortstop. There’s nothing wrong with this pick compared to Hawkins & Giolito.

Cecchini is NOT NOT NOT NOT light hitting. He is a good hitter with solid power and a GREAT attitude. The kid is a hard nosed baseball player and has good hands, feet and arm in the field. What is wrong with you people, this kid looks good. He actually reminds of Jeter and he has the same build. Maybe Hawkins and Giolito are going to be good players but so is this kid.

I’m with ya Fonzie. I wanted Sale and Hawkins too.

As I see it, we have ENOUGH light-hitting middle infielders. We do not have enough power hitters. Hawkins was the easy pick. As was Gallo in the supplemental round, even though I like Pawlecki.

You want to know the truth about all this talk about who they picked?

IF we HAD TAKEN Hawkins the few of those who liked him better would have joined the few who seem to subscribe to “They know better than I do so he MUST be good!” (no matter who they picked) folks and in the end all you will have a bunch of folks all saying it’s good pick which says nothing because 9 out of 10 picks turn out to be busts anyway!

We will see who makes the MLB and judge the draft then!

What I meant by need is position wise, not neccesarily the type of hitter. You make valid points, middle infieders are much harder to develope, we’re lacking in that area. What concerns me is the many different scouting reports. Some love the pick and some see him as a utility infielder. Actually one of the commenters put a link up in the shouttbox right after Cecchini was picked and the 3 or 4 scouts that were going over each position were raving about Gavin and Jose Valentin’s son Jesmuel Valentin who went in the 2nd round to the Dodgers. He also showed surprising power in BP, and supposedly has great instincts. Then there are some reports that are not nearly as glowing and DePodesta worries me. Hopefully he;s the next Nomar minus the injures.

As for priority if this Fo thinks replacing a .300 hitter is a higher priority than replacing Bay do we really want them running this team?

Fons, I don’t think you draft on major league need in the draft, certainly not. But you yourself justified Hawkins by saying the system was devoid of impact bats.

Look, I’ve never seen either play. I just have the same scouting reports you do. If the Mets have a chance to get an impact bat that grades out average in all other defensive aspects, plus plate discipline issues, or a guy with top notch defense at a premium position, a very good bat, all the instincts and all the other praise heaped on him, give me the middle infielder every day.

Wow Metsie! Who “howled for joy” my original comment was I would have taken Hawkins over Cecchini. But im no scout. However the fact that they seem to be more concered with replacing your buddy Tejada and his “.300 average” (in just over 100 at bats I might add) instead of Jason bay tells me there seems to be a greater MI need then OF. But hey keep up with your selective reading this was fun

A lot of people “Who Know WELL” according to some of the folks here did not think this kid was best!

yes he played good in HS….Most of the kids that get drafted do!

No I’m pointing out just how ludicrous all the Howling for Joy was over an 18 year old who needed a year of Pre-School baseball before he could start his way up through the Minor leagues!

If this 18 year old was as good as everyone seemed to think he was then why did it take a year to assign him to a team?

Where was Tejada when he was 18?

Good point on jason Bay…Did we draft his replacement? Even an average kid in the draft could replace Bay in a year!
No we drafted the kid to replace the .300+ hitter instead! TOP PRIORITY!

couple things:

- certainly you can have an opinion on a pick, but as noted, thee was not much difference between these 2 guys. 15/16, 12/18, whatever it was by source, but they were pretty darned close. and you aren’t exactly comparing the same thinkg (not like 2 RH pitchers say). How much do they weight D vs. O say?

in any case, not like they took some unranked guy leaving a top 3 rated guy on the board.

- worrying about guys 5 years from now? That is an eternity in MLB. Between guys getting hurt, traded, falling apart, there is next to no one that is any kind of lock to be here.

Plus, the current MI (tejada and Murphy) will both have hit FA by then.

look back to 2007. How many guys from that team are on this one? 2 maybe (Wright and pelf)? And there may not be too many more guys than that on this team still around by then!

none of us know how these guys work out, but the FO had their reasons for deciding they liked Gavin more, and they are the ones that wil lbe held accountable!

and if the history of the draft teaches anything, there is a decent chance that both these guys end up busting, but some unheralded 5th round pick will become a star!
