Shortstop Carlos Correa Selected No. 1 Overall By Astros
The Houston Astros shocked many in attendance during Day One of the 2012 First Year Player Draft last night when they selected shortstop Carlos Correa from Puerto Rico.
Correa who was actually one of the players in attendance, reached into his pocket as he strolled to the podium, pulled out a small Puerto Rican flag and waved it at the cheering crowd.
The 17-year-old slugging shortstop had just made hometown history at the baseball draft, and the Houston Astros hope it’s only the start of many big moments for the first No. 1 overall pick from Puerto Rico.
“I was very surprised,” Correa said. ”I feel so excited to be the No. 1 pick. I’ve worked so hard to be here.”

5 picks down, and Mark Appel, who was so highly touted as the #1 pick, is not taken yet. Hmmm.
Mark Appel’s #8? and he’s compared to Verlander? Could be a steal for the Pirates. Time will tell.
Boras client.
Figures. Shouldn’t have stopped 7 teams from picking him though.
With Colorado next to pick, I wonder if Baseball America will be right about them picking Courtney Hawkins. That’s the guy the Mets want from what I heard.
I wanted Almora and Dahl, but didn’t think they’d get to 12, and I would liked Hawkins, but I can’t complain about Cecchini. A solid contact hitter with plus defense and great instincts. The farm system is full of corner players lacking defensively. Cecchini would make a real nice 2B with Tejada. You figure Nimmo will make it a bit before Cecchini and between he and Kirk and Ike, this team has a future of kids that can catch the ball. It’s an exciting thought.
Looks like this kid has amazing speed and I think its awesome hes already formed a bond with David Wright. Thats the type of things a franchise player does. This kid looks like he has great upside and seems like the type of kid who can be a leader and just flat out loves the game. These are the type of developmental players the Mets need. The Mets could have had more power with Hawkins but the Mets are building this team off of quality guys with high baseball IQ and guys who can work counts and get on base. Attributes like love for the game and leadership are not things that can be taught to a kid so I love this pick.
