Zack Wheeler On Disabled List
The Binghamton Mets have placed number one prospect Zack Wheeler on the seven-day D.L. with a fingernail problem. The injury just needs a little time to heal and is not considered serious. Hah! Made you look! (click photo to embiggen)

The first time I went to Shea was not for a Mets game, it was for the Beatles concert there in August of '66. My first Met game was '67, a guy named Salty Parker was the interim-manager then. My first pennant race was 1969. As a 12 year-old that summer and fall, I managed to get to the park for 3 games. The first was the beginning of the Miracle which actually started on Tuesday July 8, 1969 with a day game against the Cubs. I was there a lot in '73. I saw games 3 & 5 of the 1973 NL Playoffs against the "Big Red Machine", from the upper deck behind home plate. It was from there that I witnessed the fight between Bud Harrelson and Pete Rose, and the mayhem that ensued. And that sweet victory in game 5! I saw a couple of WS games at Shea that year against that legendary Oakland A's club. I was there in 1985 for every single game Dr. K pitched including his two 16 strikeout performances, and the day he one-hit the Cubs on an infield single and the Mets won 1-0. I loved being a Met fan in those days. Hopefully we are once again preparing to emerge from the darkness.

How about some “Lee Press On Nails’ to fix the problem?
Ha!
Oh, you’re just evil
A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.
Off Topic: Familia though line not that bad so far if your listening to game has been falling behind on a lot of hitters and thrown a lot of pitches 94 so far. Seems like ump didnt give him benefit on some half swings in the 5th but got out of it. Will be interesting to see if he comes out for 6th.
Familia Line so far 5.0/IP, 5/H, 3/R, 2/ER, 3/BB, 3/SO
Yup Familia is done for the night. Carrasco coming in.
If you have yet to see it the Yankees Mariano Rivera hurt his knee catching a flyball during pregame. Here is the video.

Just shows Zach is still only a minor leaguer. Any real Met and it would have been the entire finger!
I don’t think the guy is getting enough pectin in his diet.
And some Palmolive I heard it’s good for your nails too! LOL
Metsi,
At least according to Madge it was. I’m guessing you remember her.
Joe
I remember her and consider starting her instead of Schwinden next week! LOL
Metsi,
Won’t work. Madge using that Palmolive will get her ejected for doctoring the ball.
Joe
Only if they catch her!
Maybe thats why his BB/9 is near 5…nope in 3 minor league seasons his BB/9 is 4.7…was hoping to blame the fingernail for that.
True, good thing his K/9 is 10.5.
Add to that a 6.00 H/9 and the fact he hasn’t given up a HR in 26 innings this year.
In fact in 52 innings for the Mets he hasn’t given up a HR.
Which do you think is more likely to translate to the majors…the 10.3 K/9 or the 4.7 BB/9? Remember when Mike Pelfrey was 22 and had a 10.2 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9…guess what his major league BB/9 is 3.2. Just saying…we’ve seen these over-hyped Mets prospects before…let’s not get carried away…remember, these are the Mets.
Pelfrey’s H/9 were never that low and we still don’t know if Pelfrey could have learned to be a much better pitcher if not thrown into the Majors before he was ready.
But that being said looking at Pelfrey’s numbers it is certainly a mystery what went wrong. I wonder if they just tampered with him too much as well?
I still think Wheeler has much more potential though. He looked dang impressive last year after the trade.
So far since joining the Mets 52 innings, 11 runs 1.90 ERA, 61 strike outs.
To go along with 43 hits in those 52 innings. Again, the control seems to be the only true issue going forward.
I would agree as well TRS. Biggest issue right now is control. Which I would think is a common thing with many hard throwing pitching prospects.
I wonder if that is true NJ? Might be time for another one of your famous chart post
True but it would make me feel better… lol
Control is an issue with most AA players…
It’s the focus of AA ball to learn to throw strikes.
I agree Wheeler has more potential than Pelfrey…mainly, because I think Pelfrey is, and always was a head case. However, physically, I think Pelf had as much potential as anyone ever…physical giant, mental midget.
Which also goes to show you that just throwing out names as comparable doesn’t work. Cliff Lee had high walk rates in MILB too but that doesn’t mean he will be Cliff Lee either.
I wasn’t aware about the not giving up a HR as a Met. Thx for the info. Outside of 1 start he has been much improved control wise. Personally I am more concerned with Familia’s control right now. Got to listen for the 1st time a game in which he pitched this year and he pitched good overall but seemed to be always pitching from behind.
Eddie Kunz had a nice homerless streak in the minors also before he was called up.
Ohhh kaaay???
Thx for that also I guess.
He should consult R.A. Dickey about taking care of his nails.
In his post the other day, Tim pointed out that Zach was quite wild with pitches going all over the place as compared to them being just off the strike zone. Besides the high walk ratio, he also had hit four batters in his first three appearances.
I cannot guess if his control is still a work in progress after two professional seasons or if such wildness is going to be part of his pitching repertoire. He has major stuff, no doubt, but I’m wondering if anyone knows how many of his strikeouts were due to hitters swinging at pitches major leaguers would be holding off of.
Perhaps he is not simply getting the proper coaching. For those who might have seen or read up on Sandy Koufax, it wasn’t until Sandy’s seventh season in the majors – 1961 – when Dodger catcher (and soon to be New York Met) Norm Sherry suggested he try something in his delivery during spring training which then enabled Sandy to control his nasty fastball and curve and from that time on he became one of the game’s greatest pitchers of all time.
One problem Sandy had that Zach doesn’t is that Koo never pitched in the minors (due to the old bonus rule) and thus saw limited action his first two or three seasons and because he could not get the proper work and training in the minors, also had major control problems just like Wheeler. So maybe somebody in the organization might notice the hitch in Zach’s delivery that could also resolve the same type problem.
If Tim was referring to Wheeler’s April 24th start vs the New Hampshire Fisher Cats then he most definitely was seeing a lot of wild pitches since it was his worst outing walks wise with 6 walks. I believe Tim also said it was a really cold night and that he was chalking it up to age and the learning curve for now.
Though if you look at his 2 starts prior to that and the 1 after he was nowhere near as bad with his walks.
I think Tim said it best right now I would lean that it’s more about his age and the learning curve as he is still a work in progress.
Hi North,
But from what I have read, Zach had been wild in all his appearances and those four hit batters came before that cold weather experience. Maybe the hitters are learning how to get away from those close pitches. LOL
We shall see. Like I pondered, perhaps he might get better coaching in Double-A which will enable him to master that wildness. Otherwise, we might have another Oliver Perez, minus the fragile esteem problem.
If you say you’ve read that he has been wild in all his starts then I can’t dispute if he has been wild in all his appearances or not all I can say is that his walks outside of 2 starts since becoming a Met has been much improved. Regardless Wheeler is still a long ways away from being close to MLB ready so there is time for him to work on refining his pitching.
No worries here.. If this year was 2014 then i’d be worry, it’s not…
