Wright is definitely looking like the Wright of old. His defense is better than I've seen it in a good long while and his bat is on fire.

Wright will not be traded. Reyes was not trade, despite a solid offer from the Rays. Wright will playout his contract. His option for 2013 will be picked up. 2014?

When the Wilpons first bought into the Mets. They worked to restore the loyalty of the fan base, which had been distroyed in the Midnight Massacre. They brought back both Kingman and Seaver. Good things are happening here!

"trading Wright not only ensures an empty park in 2012 but it makes the sale of any ticket packages for 2013 much harder."

I have a bone to pick with you.

What makes you so sure that trading Wright would ensure such a thing? People said the same about Reyes around this time a year ago, but fans are still coming in. Why? WINNING! The team is doing what they have to do on the field...the same team a lot of you said would be in last place right now. Wins will bring the people back if they stop being a fan because (insert name here) leaves. As long as I've been a fan, I've heard this when Straw left and when Reyes left but they all came running back. In my mind, if there is someone productive enough to fill the void of David Wright, make your move. Is there? That remains to be seen.

Not saying it will happen because it wont, but if say a guy like Dylan Bundy was available for Wright, you wouldn't do it? One player isn't irreplaceable. Ask St. Louis how they're coping without Albert.

I can't even imagine the PR nightmare (back page of the papers too!) if the Mets did something crazy like trade him a week before the ASG next year. Not that I am expecting it, just trying to imagine the internet blowing up.

But, not so sure about the attendance issue (park being empty). contrary to dire predictions, losing reyes did not crater attendance. As long as the team can fill the void and actually win (and play exciting ball in the process, with young guys capturing the fans attention) the people will come out.

Now, I don't think they can come close to replacing him (not what he is doing now), but if there really was someone coming up deserving of stepping into the job, and other guys picked up the slack and the team stayed in the playoff race, people would still come out.

in any case, IMO he is here through the end of 2013 at minimum, and either gets an extension of goes FA and leaves. I just don't see him traded along the way (for many reasons). And of course we have no idea which prospect if any might be forcing themselves onto the roster by opening day 2014 (Marte? Flores?)

personally I would like them to try and work out a reasonable for both sides deal right now (or say by 7/1) to buy out the option and add 4-5 years (so essentially a 5 year extension, 6 max). Have to believe that is doable.

David Wright is the real deal, a great player and a solid human being. It's good to see him past the beaning and the fractured back. He's handling his contract with class, quite unlike another famous player of the Mets recent past. If he never plays another game, he makes true Mets fans proud.

steve: I agree with you 100%

Here's the thing though. With the All-Star game at Citi Field next year, that is an opportunity for the Mets to fill regular season seats through packages to gain priority for AS Game tickets.

I honestly cannot see them trading Wright before that. They'd have to get blown away to trade him when he's under team control through next year.

The team is playing baseball worth paying to see and it may continue... trading Wright not only ensures an empty park in 2012 but it makes the sale of any ticket packages for 2013 much harder.

It's an easier sell when you have star power+competitive baseball and all star game tickets, rather than just a chance to see the AS Game.
