Ronnie Paulino sent down to the minors? Nothing personal against Ronnie but it would have been better for the Mets had they too done that last season instead of having him join the club after getting off the D.L. Remember, it was Paulino who failed to call off either Wright or Davis on that pop up in front of the mound in Denver. Not exactly a thinking man’s catcher.

No confirmation, more like speculation.

I agree it’s better to be safe than sorry and Josh should be allowed to rest. True, with less protective equipment Yogi might have indeed walked around for a few minutes and that would have been it but the game is different today. And we also know more about the health threats due to concussions.

Though I wish it was under different circumstances, perhaps this might give Lucas May the chance he needs and for us to see if he has overcome his problem handling pitches resulting in passed balls.

1. The Mets grabbed what should have been a momentous victory last night over the Phillies. Except Josh Thole’s head injury cast a pall over everything. He’s likely headed back to New York for more tests today, and probably will end up on the disabled list, in some form or fashion. The official word won’t come until today, most likely, but losing Thole would be a big blow.

For Thole’s part, it was a huge mistake leaning into tag with head. May inexperience, simple mistake; I don’t know.

At first, I was hoping he could just shake it off. The more replays I watched, the more I realized how serious a blow to the head it was. Wiggs is not exactly a little guy!

Thole has really been adding to our team. I think he’s developing into a good hitter, and his defensive skills are improving bit by bit all the time. To say we can ill-afford an injury like this is an understatement, but I am really hoping Josh recovers mightily and quickly. He made a tough, gutsy MLB play. He’s a Met!

Catchers are tough guys to take this kind of punishment over a career. Times have changed. Yogi Berra would have been helped to his feet, walked a few steps to clear his head and get right back behind the plate, and then rip the ball when he came to bat. It’s a different sport today, not better, not worse, just different.
