The Dude Abides As Er-Orr Leads To 7-4 Victory For Mets

Mets took advantage of their opportunities tonight and pulled off a 7-4 win in Philadelphia , giving them back-to-back wins against their division rivals.

Summary

So you know that large majority of you that like defense? You should leave now. However, if you enjoy beating the Phillies, I permit you to stay. So… all of you, stay.

Two errors for each team (and two wild pitches for Ramon Ramirez) made this an interesting contest. Miguel Batista started for the Mets tonight and actually did not do a horrible job. I think he is useful for a spot start or two, but the Mets could really compete with a rent-a-fifth-starter. Santana, Dickey, Niese, Gee, and Fifth Starter is nothing to sneeze at.

Anyway, Batista was not really dominant, but he sort of kept a bend and not break attitude out there. A final line of 5.1 IP with 8 H, 4 R (2 ER) with 2 BB/1 K. He was drilled for a Pence two-run shot in the bottom of the first for the 2 earned runs – the second two scored after a Batista errant pick off throw. I personally think they should’ve been earned, as the subsequent hits he allowed drove the runs home. Acosta went on to pick up the last two outs in the sixth with two on – and vultured the win out of the bullpen because the Mets would go on to score four in the seventh.

Ramon Ramirez pitched a clean seventh and went on to start the eighth, but worked his way into trouble. He let up a single, but two wild pitches in the next two ABs would lead to a man on third with one out. He managed to pick up the K and Byrdak bailed him out by getting Wigginton to fly out right after to keep the Phillies at bay. A single by Rollins in the ninth against Rauch, but practically no trouble for him as he picked up save number 1 on the year.

Joe Blanton had the Mets stymied for the most part, allowing only a run on a Daniel Murphy single in the fourth through the first six innings. Five hits and three walks for Blanton – and it all caught up to him in the seventh.

With runners on the corners and two out, Captain Kirk hit one into right for an RBI base knock and the Phillies subsequently beamed Blanton out of there. And then the gods smiled on the Mets, as a base hit into right for Wright ended up putting him on third and scoring both Torres and Nieuwenhuis – because of a Pete Orr error. He had both Philly errors in the contest. It was a botched rundown and throw and one could say we had a stroke of luck.

Duda would drive home Wright to make it 5-4 and give the Mets their first lead of the night. They would tack on two in the ninth off a Nieuwenhuis SAC Fly and another RBI hit for Duda with two down.

Insurance runs late in the game – the mark of a good team, and I was very happy to see that go on.

Not a sharp night for Nickeas behind the plate as both Pierre and Orr got steals on him and he was hit with a pitch.

Hero Of The Game

Oddly enough, I will say Lucas Duda. Two-out RBI hits are important – and two of them in one night for a struggling hitter is a great sign.

Notes

Acosta picks up the win to improve to 1-2 so far. 7th hold for Byrdak already this season, and as previously mentioned, save number uno for Rauch.

Wind was blowing out to CF tonight – surprised to see only one ball leave the yard.

Seriously, what more does Kirk have to do to earn a safe spot up here? Another impressive day for him.

All the Duda Day… The Dude is looking better at the plate. We need him to keep it up if we want to compete.

Rob Johnson was called up to replace Thole while he is on the 7-day DL. I love the 7-day DL.

The Mets have a ton of runs with 2 out this year – over 50% of their overall production.

Nice to see us taking advantage of the Utley/Howard-less Phillies. A win is a win, no matter when it happens in the season. It was the Mets’ league-leading 10th comeback win.

Off Topic – if I was an MLB pitcher, I would be really scared to pitch to Josh Hamilton.

On Deck

Tomorrow evening, the Mets face a tough task in a returning Cliff Lee for the Phils. Gee toes the rubber against him in a 7:05 pm start – the Mets look for the sweep.

  • Just read yesterdays post game tread comments, and what a pile of vomit. Lets pull a Rodney King and get along. The fact they got a win with Batista pitching is a great thing. LGM!!!

    • Fine I’ll play. A great win for the Mets who snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat.

      • There’s the spirit, High Five my friend!

  • It just feels so good whenever the Mets beat the Phillies. How about these Mets? They spot the Phillies 4 runs and come back to beat them 7-4. If you told me Batista would go 5 1/3 and only give up 4 runs 2 earned I’d sign up for that right away. Give it up to Capt Kirk & Duda getting 2 hits & 2 rbi’s tonight.

Positives for me has to be the pen who kept the Phils scoreless and so far in this series have pitched I believe 7 2/3 scoreless innings. Also Andres Torres who has been on base in every game he has played since coming back has hits in 7 of his last 8 games.

Last time the Phillies hid the brooms on us to avoid the sweep. Hopefully this time the Mets brought their own brooms.

  • Off topic – MMO For years and years you always did your farm reports at night. Why did you start doing them in the mornings for?

    • Duh, they get up early on the farm.

  • A very curious bit of commentary from Gary and Keith tonight. This was said after Batista’s last AB when he sacrifice bunted.

Keith and Gary commented on Batista running hard to first, and they both went on to say, “The Minaya era is over.” This comment was then qualified in the sense that under Minaya it was an unspoken rule that some players could act like prima donnas, dog it, etc. and not really have to answer for it.

Under SA and TC that crap doesn’t fly. Hey, this is from Gary and Keith so draw your own conclusions.

At any rate, just a totally beautiful win tonight, to come back that way…WOW!

This is not last year’s NYM. For all the mistakes we make, there’s also some very well executed BB being played out there, and I have to think the position players will only play smarter and execute better as the season grinds on. The seachange from last year is a positively uncanny ability to battle back from the brink. It’s getting so that I don’t have a complete meltdown when we are down by a few runs!

Lots of newbies and they are pulling their weight and then some.

Some great defensive gems by Wright, Torres, Murph–crucial.

If only Ike could reduce the appalling Ks–so nauseating. He will snap out of it, but when?

Again, way to go boys! Such a good night!

    • Hi Russell,

I heard that comment too and then understood the point they were making since the remarks came after that hustle down the line by Batista.

Let’s not forget how often we saw players not hustle out of the box (especially Delgado admiring his fly balls and turned doubles into singles or throw outs at second), wore their sunglasses over the bill of their cap for style (like Reyes dropped a pop up in the sun) or didn’t slide into home when supposed to (Wright, who merely apologized). Indeed, these and others like those were acts of prima donnas.

And I remember it got so bad that this attitude became a bad influence that permeated down to others. Fernando Martinez, in just his second game ever in the majors, didn’t run out of the box on a ball he thought would go foul and was either tagged or thrown out easily at first.

They then went on to mention this was no longer being tolerated and no more could certan players go over the head of the manager to the General Manager to complain or intercede on their behalf. Omar keeping his door open to certain players undermined both Willie Randolph and Jerry Manuel. The same held true for Steve Phillips. In this instance, Sandy is doing the right thing. Any complaints – take it up with your manager — the door to my office is closed for that.

Ron also mentioned that the team is hustling also because they are young, hungry and trying to make a statement about themselves.

Will not deny my first instinct was that they were about to take a cheap shot at Omar since the players were mostly obtained under his watch – but that was not what they were getting at they were absolutely correct. For this individual, whom most know has tremendous issues with the new G.M., this is not one of those times. Sandy is doing the right thing and I commend him for it.

      • The “breaking the chain” thing seems to have been more of a Wilpons deal, not any specific GM. Jeffy has been known to enjoy hanging out with the players and trying to make baseball decisions.

        • Actually, it probably began with Jeff even before he and his father took over as majority owners since it was also known to happen with Steve Phillips (I believe once was with Cliff Floyd).

  • Great comeback win tonight to take the series against Philly.

Only down side is TC stated Batista gets another start.

  • Wow, First of all, Satish my good friend, welcome back LOL… Either way, great win for the mets, everyone played exceptionally. Valdespin looked a little nervous out there but he pulled the off.. Great situational hitting all game, from kirk to david to duuuuudaaaaaa… That was a really good victory, the bullpen hold the phillies off to nothing again (Talk about a sputtering offense), Great defense (Tremendous play by wright who is playing out of his mind, Reminds me of the wright we saw 2007) overall except for jordanny who was really nervouse out there.. Great win!

  • GREAT WIN, The kids are allright. We just need to get Ike going. I would hit him 2nd for a few games to get him some fastballs and get confidence going.

  • It sure is fun to watch this team. Terry Collins has again instilled the right attitude in his players who never quit. They will not win the division and probably won’t make the playoffs this year but they come to play every night and because of that….you just never know!

Hopefully, the rash of injuries will slow down and our younger up and coming stars will continue to mature as major league players. The future is looking brighter for the organization and we have Sandy Alderson to thank. He was brought to NY to clean up the mess he inherited and to keep the team afloat until the financial fallout from the Madoff scandal could be settled. For the fans who are mad that he didn’t resign Jose…..understand that this was a business decision and you will be glad later on. There was just too much risk for a long term, big dollar signing because of Jose’s injury history. Imagine the second guessers swooping down like vultures if Jose was still here and off to the same start as he has had in Miami? Even worse would be the howling if he pulled up lame again for 50 or more games. Only a fool would not admit the likelihood of those happenings.

I personally am happy with the new direction of the team….It would be great to have a strong, young group of players to stay together for a 5-7 year run of good steady baseball instead of 3-5 years at a time of mediocre at best teams that literally have no chance of winning anything!
