Wright continues to impress everyone this year, and his batting average for the entire year sits at .412. His strikeout count has decreased quite a bit this year, he is not chasing many pitches out of the zone and thus is also getting more walks this year.

Honorable Mentions

These players, although not winning the Player of the Week award, had a very strong showing this week and deserve to be recognized. We will also show how strong a showing they had through the use of the scorecard.

Trivia

To finish off the Player of the Week announcement each week, I’ll be asking you a trivia question. The answer will be announced during the next Player of the Week announcement, as well as the first person who answered correctly. Another question will then be asked. Last Week’s Answer is: 16 wins for Tom Seaver in 1967. Adam was the first person to correctly answer the question. So here is this week’s question:

When did David Wright make his Major League debut and against what team?

  • No argument here… He’s been on fire… think like 20-40 with 11 RBI in last 10 games or something…
My prediction for POTW next week is: Johan Santana!!!!

When did David Wright make his Major League debut and against what team?

july 21, 2004 against montreal expos. went 0-4!

    • It figures that unclutch SOB went 0-4 and left 4 guys on base! :-)

    • Lmao… Sign of things to come!!!

  • I am sensing a trend here, right?

You know a lot of hype was given to a former Met when he was on pace to become the 1st ever batting champ for the Mets.

I wonder if those same people will start giving any hype to the fact that right now, David Wright is the NL MVP. That to me is more impressive than a batting title. It’s more elite.

Wright is staking his claim that this his team. He is the leader, with or without a silly ‘C’.

He’s carrying this team right now while guys like Ike and Duda are still sleepwalking through the season.

    • right now, David Wright is the NL MVP”
I am sorry, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?????? you’re blindly love for the guy got you thinking that…
      Matt Kemp 359 12 28
      Carlos Beltran 291 13 33
      Andre Ethier 308 8 37
      ryan the cheater braun 331 11 29

He’s carrying this team right now” to a what??? a 4th place record in the division? As hot as he’s been, he’s got 4 HR’s and is not driving in runs.. And just as we saw in the 8th inning last night, when the pressure is on, you STILL don’t trust this guy… Please… Stick to MMO player of the week, all those guys mention except the cheater have their team in first place and will be in it come september, chances are the mets will be out of it by july and he’ll cool off from his 400 Ba.

      • They are in 3rd place, actually. And 2 games over .500, far better than many people thought they would be at this point.

        • Three games over .500!

      • Kemp’s injury is being taken into account with my statement. If he comes back quick, then yes it will be hard to take it away from him.

Wright is playing like an MVP.

By the way, I’m never going to apologize for loving a Mets player. For some reason you think that’s a knock on me… but you thinking that, says enough about you.

        • I couldn’t agree with all of your points more. Wright is and always has been (and hopefully always will be) an excellent (bordering on super star) player. The fact that he was cast as the face of the franchise entirely too soon is no fault of his. He has at time not been the most clutch player but he has been a consistant producer that plays very good D and will never make the franchise look bad.

We, as fans always complain that why are certain guys jerks and why can’t our team ever have a guy who both produces and is likable to the public? Well here he is and he has always been here. He is just now coming into his own and we are witnessing it. Not predicting HOF for him or anything like that, just the FACTS that when he is healthy he is an excellent to great all around player, a true GAMER, and apparently a very good person. What’s not to like?

          • Agreed, regardless of where it goes from here Wright has done all he can to make the Mets organization and it’s fans proud. Really doesn’t matter if a small minority sees it otherwise.

      • You are right, it wouldn’t be a run away for sure and the way MVP goes it most likely would go to Kemp assuming he gets back from injury but where would a the Mets be without Wright this year? How many games below .500?

Also, how cheap of you to bring up one of the times he has failed when he is hitting .462 .682 .615 1.297 with RISP 2/O. (One of the measures YOU used to determine clutch). Come on, for now while he is hot just focus on giving him credit. You won’t internally combust or anything. I promise.

        • Just for giggles though.
IF Wright finished hitting over .400 don’t you think he would have an incredible case for MVP? Considering it hasn’t been done since 1952 in MLB and in the NL since 1930. I would say that might make a good case.
Wright is leading the batting race by 53 points and has an OBP 58 points higher than anyone else and has an OPS+ tied with Kemp at 221 which is also 36 points higher than the guy in 3rd. Do we not realize how ridiculous this is? Of course it’s unsustainable. But why knock it now?

          • Wright finishing the season hitting .400 or better? Nope….La-La-La, not talking about this now. Don’t want to think about this now. I start thinking this is a possibility and knowing our luck the past few years, he’ll be swinging a bat on the on deck circle and the batter in the box will foul a ball off his kneecap breaking it……

      • wow, just wow…. guys, the man IS playing like an MVP right now, but to say as of this point he’s the MVP is crazy… again, Matt kemp even though is hurt has played in 34 games, is hitting 359 29 RS, 28 RBI 12 HR Slug % 726 ohh, and BTW, Dodgers are on first place… Come on man…

        • Alex, if Wright became the first NL player to hit over .400 since 1930 and the first since Ted Williams wouldn’t you say he would also have a great case? If he won the batting race by 50 points?

It’s too early to have this discussion anyway. Also just for giggles those Runs are tied with Wright for 1st place.

        • Yes, and Kemp also has Ethier, and AJ Ellis.

The Met with at least 100AB with the 2nd highest OPS is Ruben Tejada with a .762 compared to Wright’s 1.138.

Kemp is becoming a star, no doubt about it. But he’s also getting help this year. Wright’s getting NO HELP. The entire offense rests on his shoulders every single night.

          • Kemp is becoming a star, no doubt about it”
            Are you on drugs???
But he’s also getting help this year”
Wait what???? when we say delgado, beltran and reyes were helping WRIGHT put up those huge numbers during the 2006-2008 seasons you guys say that was not the case!!! What!!!??? Now we get to use THAT as an excuse because the golden boy is hitting over 400 in may?

            • Do you realize you’re on a Mets blog and arguing against a Met player who is carrying the Mets right now?

I don’t care about what you thought when delgado, reyes, beltran were here. Wright wasn’t up for MVP discussion.

The fact is, the Dodgers have 3 very good offensive players right now, and 2 of them are MVP candidates. The Mets have 1. Nobody on the Mets is even sniffing the success that Wright has had. He’s carrying the team, that’s an MVP to me.

I’m not gonna sit here and hope he doesn’t continue (like you are) because I am rooting FOR him, not AGAINST him.

              • except maybe for the back to back years when he finished 4th and 7th? I would consider that up for consideration!

and those 2 followed that awful year when he only finished 9th!

seriously though, how can you argue against a guy being a top player when they can finish top-10 in the MVP voting 3 straight years?

of course there is no 1/4 post MVP award, but if they did vote right now, DW would get serious consideration.

            • I’m not gonna sit here and hope he doesn’t continue (like you are) because I am rooting FOR him, not AGAINST him”

AND ROOTNG FOR RYAN BRAUN INSTEAD OF A MET PLAYER IN JOSE REYES IS ACCEPTABLE?????? SEE HOW HYPOCRITE YOU ARE?

              • Once again, YOU said I was rooting for Braun. Not me. I never said I was rooting against Jose. I wasn’t. YOU just felt that way.

I like Braun as a player. Less now obviously, but I’m not gonna deny I like(d) the guy. But I was never rooting for him over Jose. I cannot be a hypocrite if the act you describe is made up in your head.

              • So, are you telling me, that you never said “I Hope ryan braun wins the batting title, i honestly am”

                • If I ever said that, I did so to probably aggravate somebody you know.

I don’t think I ever said it or felt that way because the only day of my life I ever boo’d Jose Reyes as a Met was game 162 when he was walking off the field.

I have to admit though, I LOVE how much it ticks you off that David Wright is by far the MVP of this team.

                  • Yeah and the reson you booed him was because he didn’t stay in a meaningless game that you percieved as possibly costing him the batting title which you were so hoping would happen to fit your Reyes Isn’t Worth It agenda!

Every other Met fan was HAPPY to see Reyes win the Title and felt he deserved it regardless of what he did in game 162!

Only you guys who are the INVENTORS of “your not a fan because you root for/against (insert absurdity here)” felt Reyes skated his way to the title he earned and you quickly dismissed as quick as possible so you could make a case for him leaving and not making an offer!

Why just last week you tried the old I root for Francisco to fail bull you just hated when it was used against you!

Hypocracy is one of the few things your actually good at Jesse!

                    • he was gonna win the batting title anyway. I didn’t care and still don’t care about batting titles.

I care about the final memory of a homegrown player who I believe knew was playing in his final game as a Met in NY. He took himself out of the game. He could have played until his next AB. Nothing he could have done from the moment he touched first to his next AB could harm his personal achievement.

If David Wright takes himself out of his final Mets game to win a personal achievement, I’ll be right there calling him bush for it.

                    • No you didn’t care because you WANTED it to be a final memory!

Didn’t have to be and time may show probably shouldn’t be!

You have been lucky so far Reyes hasn’t been as hot as he was last year but he has been healthier than Tejada!
Tejada hit when healthy but if he comes back and slumps whats your story going to be then especially since reyes has started hitting again?

Here is some news you should take into consideration…
Marlins are now ahead of us in the division!

                    • “Here is some news you should take into consideration…Marlins are now ahead of us in the division!”

Actually superfan, the Mets and Marlins are tied in the division. And since the Mets have a better head to head record, if the season ended today, the Mets would get the final playoff berth.

There’s some news you should take into consideration.

                    • DING DING DING DING!

We have the first instance of namecalling and guess oh guess who it was?

                      The Who Me kid!

Should be noted that the MLB has them listed ABOVE US!
Yes we are tied right now…But then again the “GOOD DAY” Bullpen hasn’t had a chance to pitch yet today!

                    • that’s because M comes before N in the alphabet.

I’m not sure why you’d see they have the same record and jump to the thought that they are ahead of us in the standings.

The W is for Wins. The L is for Losses. Then there is Win %.

If they are all equal then they are tied and not as you say “ahead of us in the division!”

                    • Yep so getting back on topic here….Why were you mad at Reyes for sitiing out again?
Because he had already locked up the award? or as Alex pointed out that he sat out to WIN the award he already locked up? Which is it can’t change your opinion now so which one do we stick with here?

And Two Why was it Reyes’ final game as a met? Who said it was?
                      Reyes? Alderson? or Jesse?

It was YOUR intention that it be his last game as a met probably not Reyes’
May or may not have been Sandy’s intention but it sure was nhis intention not to make an offer when he had exclusive rights and had no offer from the Marlins already made to ‘SET PARAMETERS”

SO the only reason it was Reyes farewell game was because you wanted it to be!
He chose the day before to be his farewell game!
You know the day he ACTUALLY won the Batting title for good!

                • I’m kind of excited to see the context of this quote.

                  • Here is Xtreeme saying it outright…

                    http://metsmerizedonline.com/2011/09/reyes-asked-out-of-the-game.html
“This was disgusting. Reyes should be ashamed of himself. I’m rooting hard for Braun tonight.”

                    • So I am now responsible for what Xtreem says?

I didn’t say it, and I’m not faulting Xtreem for being disgusted by how Jose handled the situation either.

                    • Did i say you said anything? Just pointing out who actually did and note not a peep of complaint from you when it’s your buddy rooting for the other team over his own players or at yourself when some other player on another team is ok to take a day off when he IS in playoff race and games count but when your own does it in a game that is meaningless and you complain and boo profusely about him doing something to affact an award you READILY ADMIT was ALREADY WON on the day of the transgression!

Face the facts Jesse the only reason why you were pissed is because you were HOPING he lost the title making your sell job easier the rest of the winter!

And by coming out you could not root against him to get what you wanted!
You may not have actually said it, but it was quite clear what got you so upset!
He came out of a game you are quoted in this thread as saying didn’t matter one way or the other to winning it!
Yet are pissed and complain that he did it to get an award he already had!
One you wanted to root against in hopes he lost and thats what bothers you the most about his exit!

        • Talk to me in september about 400.. Now,ask yourself, what’s more likely, kemp hitting 40+ HR and driving in 120+ runs, or david wright hitting almost 90 points above his career avg??
And to jesseP, wether you like it or not, Jose Reyes is the first met to win a Batting title… If wright wins one this year it might be with the highest BA for a met in a season…. 354 by olerud in 1998

        • Alex,

I respect you and often find humor in your posts. That being said you always find fault in all things Mets. I respect that you’re entitled to your opinion and can take what ever stand you so decide but let me ask you a serious question. What would it take for you to stop knock (and I know you are not currently knocking him) D. Wright? I understand that finding a player that may be having a better year may not be seen by all as knocking him but some of us think it may be. Jast Sayin!!!

          • Sloat, as said, i am not knocking him.. Don’t understand what’s the question? Just saying he’s top 5 but to say that right now (When it’s irrelevant anyways) that he’s the MVP just because kemp missed 6 games is utterly ridiculous… Kemp is having a dream crazy season, hell, even beltran.. Those guys know what their roles are (Producers, not OBP guys) and are doing their part by hitting HR’s and Driving in runs, Wright is a prototypical #2 hitter imo, Contact, OBP and line drives for doubles, which is good if you got delgado, beltran and co behind you, not good enough on this team in my humble opinion..

            • Just again for comparisons, Kemp who is playing for an incredible offense with around the 3rd most runs in the NL, who also has 12 HR has 28 RBI to Wright’s 24. (Also the plate appearances are about the same, Wright has 16 more).

      • So, an at bat in the 8th when the Mets are up 3 runs and strikes out is a big spot but when he hits a 2 run HR in the 8th to turn a 1 run deficit against the Marlins into a win couldn’t be classified as clutch? Right. Got it.

  • Also, TRS86, Who hit over 400 in baseball in 1952?>???? I thought the last man that hit 400 was ted williams in 1941?
Closest man to hit 400 were George Brett in 1980 and Gwynn in 1994!!

    • he meant 25, Hornsby. Probably just a typo.

    • IF Wright finished hitting over .400 don’t you think he would have an incredible case for MVP? Considering it hasn’t been done since 1952 in MLB and in the NL since 1930.”

Again, don’t try to be smart ok, Williams was the LAST player to hit over 400 in BASEBALL in 1941… What’s a typo about that????

      • it is called a transposition error. he meant 25, typed 52. as in, the last time a NL player did it. Williams obviously was in the AL.

of all people here, you should understand the concept of a typo!

    • It was a typo Alex. Thanks for catching it. He actually did hit .400 in 1952 and .407 in 1953 but played in only a hand full of games.

Also missing the point though. If David Wright was the first guy since Ted Williams to hit over .400 do you think he would have a good shot at MVP? Is it likely to happen? Nope, but neither is Kemp’s season either.

    • “Closest man to hit 400 were George Brett in 1980 and Gwynn in 1994!!”

You gotta mention John Olerud as well. He was hitting over .400 in ’93 until the last month or so of the season.

  • No argument here. Congrats once again Mr. Wright.

  • I’ll take a shot at the trivia…
    July 21st vs Montreal!

    • Ahh I see Alex beat me to this by a mile LOL

  • This is what jesseP was saying in defending and rroooting for braun instead of jose reyes:

    jessep September 28, 2011 at 9:59 pm .

Braun isn’t a free agent and is in a playoff race. He had reasons to sit. Jose sat because it was all about Jose

    jessep September 28, 2011 at 10:08 pm .

Sorry that I’m a downer on this but I can’t fathom how people who claim to be old school baseball fans celebrate a guy who took himself out of the final game of the year in front of a hometown crowd heading into free agency all for an individual award?
I mean I’m happy he won it, I don’t think it really means that much though. I don’t remember caring when Chipper-Hanley-CarGo won the batting titles…
I’m more concerned with the fact people are falling on the sword for a guy who only cared for his own personal award over the team and the fans who paid to see him play

    Maniac then ask jesseP:
Why not support your our team and player?

    JesseP never responded…

    • Oh, that’s it? Really?

“I mean I’m happy he won it”

Did you skip that part? Where in that entire thing does it say “I Hope ryan braun wins the batting title.”

It says I am happy Jose won it, but the method in which he handled game 162 was bush league. Not sure how that proves hypocrisy? It proves I’m consistent with my thoughts, thanks.

    • “I mean I’m happy he won it”

Oh, ya, totally hated the guy.

By the way, you should link to the post this was said in. And, after the first inning of game 162, Reyes wasn’t a Met anymore.

  • Matter of fact, after the braves (Team JesseP was heavily rooting for to make the playoffs) choked the wild card lead he was not heard from in a while…

  • More on jesseP defending other players but his own SS, this time was when jeter sat to keep his avg at exactly 300 and sat down:

    jessep September 28, 2011 at 10:23 pm .

    srt you sure about that?
In 2008, Jeter’s last hit was on September 19th. So he went 4 games without a hit and didn’t play in 4 out of the last 5. (2 prior to his final game and 2 after)
Jeter also played the entire final home series of the 2008 season.
The same people who despise new school thinking including sabermetrics are the same people who should despise an individual player putting individual awards over the team and the fans… yet ironically because its our guy, they put personal feelings aside?
    Here’s the good part:

    jessep September 29, 2011 at 12:19 pm .

It’s like if a guy bunts on a Mets pitcher in the 9th going for a no hitter, we’d all be mad right?

But if Reyes bunts in the 9th versus a Halladay no hitter, we’d all stand and defend it.

I’m not saying I’m not happy he won a batting title, I think he would have won it no matter what but not only did he take himself out but he bunted for the hit. It could have been his final game as a Met and he took himself out for a personal award.

Why that doesn’t “bother” more people is beyond me. If yesterday was Reyes’ final game as a Met, I’ll remember how he took himself out in the 1st inning in front of a home crowd… not winning a batting title with a bunt.

I think you have a problem accepting human nature and how fans behave towards their own players regardless if it’s Milwaukee or New York. And now if Reyes signs with another team it’s because of greed – in your opinion. Okay.

I think this has more to do with your frustration about the killing David Wright gets here more than anything else, and this is your way of getting back at it.

Just admit it and I’ll commend you for your honesty.

I really don’t see what D Wright has to do with this discussion?

If the Mets had a playoff spot wrapped up
And the Brewers played a meaningless game and Braun did that, you would be all over him would you not? Admit it.

It was a bush league move.

But Braun DID do the same thing as Reyes – It’s unbelievable how you are making exucses for Braun, and your killing Reyes for doing the same thing.

Fact: In the last series of the year, Ryan Braun didn’t start when he was leading Jose Reyes….and came back in once Reyes passed him, and then played in the last two games when Reyes was leading.

Why aren’t you upset about that?

    • Alex, you realize you’re totally ruining your own argument?

Your entire “proof” is about me being disgusted with how he handled the situation. Not that I was rooting for any other player. I’m mad at Jose for leaving game 162 of his final Met game the way he did to preserve an individual achievement.

You’re focusing on a batting title that means almost nothing. I wasn’t. I was focused on HOW he went about his final Met game. And you still have not shown me any proof that I said I was rooting for Braun.

I don’t care about how other players handle their business. The 1 met to ever win a batting title, did so in a negative way. He didn’t go out on top, he snuck away out the back door and to make it worse, it was his final game as a Met.

      • Yeah well if the FANS had not gone out of their way to make every excuse up for not keeping him around maybe he would have cared what those fans thought!

Maybe he didn’t INTEND for it to be his last game as a Met maybe that was someone ELSE’s Agenda…
I wonder who that could be?

Hint you will need at least one S to spell their name and probably two!

  • So let’s review, during yesterday’s game the score was 6-3 when Wright came to bat with the bases loaded and k’d. If you were a betting person, you could take the bet on either

    a. Had he gotten a big hit the same group of fans would call him a stat padder
    b. He didn’t get a hit so that same group of fans said “And just as we saw in the 8th inning last night, when the pressure is on, you STILL don’t trust this guy”

The man is off the charts in every offensive category by A LOT, including being tied for first in majors of game winning RBI’s, yet you still have fans of this team arguing that other players on other teams are more in line for the MVP title then the guy on the team they “love”.

Same group of people slam someone for saying Kimbrel was a good closer (which MLB agreed with – winning Rookie of the Year award).

Seriously, what a cesspool of so called fans……….

I guess it’s cool to defend a Met, just as long as his name is not David Wright. What a cesspool.

    It’s sickening……………
