David Wright only missed three games this month, all due to a fractured finger, and during those three games, the Mets went 1-2. He had 3 home runs. This year, he has looked stellar.

  • Well, You could’ve make a case for niese… Stronger case, he pitched 4 Quality starts, he Pitched well enough to win all 4 games, he was consistant all month… Don’t agree with the selection..
Funny stat i read, Mets are #2 in OBP, BA, walks and #1 in Strikeouts in the NL.. . Weird!

    • Wait, you don’t agree with the selection? ;)

Actually I would have went with Kirk myself.

    • Also your funny stat, I guess that shows that they are following Hudgens patiently aggressive approach? LOL. Or maybe the fact that Ike, Duda and Bay were K machines?

      • Yep, his aproach is sooooo good that the mets are collectively hitting 240 with RISP and 100 with bases loaded…

        • Yup, .242 with RISP and .268 overall. Big difference. The bases loaded problem is certainly one that has to be addressed. Of course that might have more to do with Ike, Bay and Duda stinking up the joint than any “approach” or issue.

          • Yeah they do need to improve in some situations. But some of the RISP stuff has to do with who is getting those ABs in RISP situations. Ike who has been brutal to start the year (though it looks like he is starting to come around) has 10 more AB than anyone else on the team with RISP and he’s been brutal in those spots which can certainly weigh down the team totals.

Though most everyone has struggled for the most part…Wright is the only regular hitting even over .270 in those spots….Baxter and Turner have done a nice job off the bench. But it is still a limited number of ABs..most of the regulars have around 20 AB in those spots…so hopefully they’ll pick up a few hits soon and start to improve those numbers.

            • excellent point about Ike made here!
It does explain a lot of it!

        • Yp, more numbers, only 18 HR’s, 6 SB’s, somehow they’re hitting 239 at home and 300 on the road. Amazing aproach right??? SMH

          • Uh what the hell would Hudgens have to do with SB? Also, you fail to mention that those 18HR places them in the middle of the pack around league average. I seriously don’t get you sometimes. Do you dislike Hudgens only because he was hired by Sandy? Are you honestly saying that the Mets offense and their approach was better before he got here?

            • Also worth noting, if you take out Ike Davis’ home numbers you end up with a team average of .258 instead. Yeah, he’s just been that bad.

          • More numbers in 2010 the Mets finished:

            13th in Home Runs
            13th in Runs
            13th in BA
            13th in BA
            14th in OBP

Yup, the approach hasn’t improved a bit.

            • Well it sure hasn’t helped much with RISP…
The HRs have been due to the moved in fences and playing at CBP where they had a derby.

Not saying they have not done better as of late and I will give credit to Hudgens for that but the truth is up to two weeks ago they were not really following Hudgens approach at all! They were way more passive than Hudgens would suggest.
Wright has been the one bright spot so far this year in regards to batting improvement and you can’t really give Hudgens much credit for that as much as Wright himself because Hudgens didn’t get any of that from him last year!

They have been more aggressive lately and most notably Duda and Ike. That says to me Hudgens has been focused on them recently and that the rest of the batting is just player playing well.

    • Apologies to the Core Alex but I have to agree that Tyler did a good job here when looking at the stats he posted to back it up.

14 RBI, .389 BA but what Wright has done so well so far is noted in the BB:K Ratio.
Wright has actually walked more than struck out which shows he may be back to the player he was a few years ago.

I think in this case you have to give credit where credit is due.

Yes Niese has pitched well but he is still only averaging 6.3 IPG and while that says good things about what may come later from him it still is not the reason we have the record we have today.
What the starting pitchers have done so far SHOULD be important to the record but the Bullpen has made it not so far too often!

    • Wow, the first to post and to say someone else deserved it more, didn’t see that one coming huh?

    • “Funny stat i read, Mets are #2 in OBP, BA, walks and #1 in Strikeouts in the NL.. . Weird!”

      And #2 in Plate appearances.

As has been pointed out many times to you and others, the Mets biggest problem right now is that Davis and Duda had the slow start. And Bay stinking up the joint doesn’t help.

      • Bay at the point he was here was the least of their concerns: .240 .316 .460 .776. Not great but certainly better than the other 2 at the time.

      • Thing is donal, you can then also point out how david wright has been hot, so has thole, murphy and even tejada if you’re gonna point out how ike davis and duda and bay are struggling, you sabergooners wanna have it your way all the time…

        • Are Thole and Tejada home run hitters? Are they middle of the order? Their hot start explains how the Mets have the high OBP and BA but are middle of pack in runs. You don’t see how having 2 or 3 power hitters lined up after each other and being automatic outs might explain that?

          Hmmmm?

  • Wright is the fair choice. The best example is how dead the team was when he was out of the lineup. Honerable mention is definitely to Tejada. Having to follow Reyes is a lot of pressure and that kid has done nothing but keep his mouth shut and rake. He is also probably one of the better defenders on the team (not saying much).

    • Wright is the fair choice. The best example is how dead the team was when he was out of the lineup”

Dead???? Mets were 1-2 without him.. We faced stratsburgh and detwiler who’s 2-1 with an 1.64 ERA so far and were shutdown… I get it, you like your boy but don’t make up stuff without realize that we struggle because of the pitchers we faced, not for him being out of the lineup…

      • My oh my what a complex.

      • Stratsburgh and Detwiler – The best tax accountants east of the Mississippi.

      • Haha this couldn’t of been predicted.

And the win was against Cliff Lee, whats your point? In those 3 games the offense was completely flat. They absolutely faced good pitching but when you have Duda, Ike and Bay and Murph in that period getting only 1 hit in game one and 2 hits in the second and third game, it demonstrates that the middle of the order didn’t do squat and needed a catalyst.

  • Correct choice. Wright had a hot April, no doubt about it – as Straw would say. :-)

  • Nice! Congrats again to Wright.

  • No brainer. I dont get Alex’s Niese argument at all.

  • To Everyone, i did not say he didn’t deserve it, just said i would’ve gone with niese… That’s it…

    • Don’t you think by saying you would have went with Niese and you don’t agree with the selection it would imply you think he didn’t deserve it?

Honestly though, there’s nothing wrong with you saying he didn’t deserve it. I would have given it to Kirk myself. I think him coming from no where to do what he has offensively and defensively while also piling up your favorite “clutch” hits has been huge so far.

      • Well, they aren’t mutually exclusive. You can think one guy is a good choice but another is better.

Of course, alex being alex, that isn’t what is happening. If he really thought Wright was a good choice but would have preferred Niese, he could have just voiced it like you did and not need to tear down Wright.

      • Where did i bring him down!!???

  • Easy choice. He was the second best player in the NL in April

    • Agreed about being the 2nd best in the NL, and of course left off in this discussion to keep the birds away coming into last night he had a .500 OBP.

  • Whenever I come to this site I can count on two things; a bunch of great posts and a bunch of awful comments from the CORE.

  • Wright had a great April…. So do we give him the “C” or do we sell him while he’s hot?

    • RUN!!! RUN!!!

    • neither.

    • We should never give anyone a “C” if you ask me…
Better to let the players decide on their own who is their leader and who is not because a better one may come along!

The only time you should give anyone the captains role is if you have a strong personality that is causing trouble and want to nullify his influence by giving the better leader a leg up and cause to tell him to be quiet and do your job!

It makes sense for a team like the Yankees who have egos coming through their roster on a yearly basis.
But not for a team like us at this point!
And the truth of the matter here is if Murphy solidifies his position as a 2B and can stay there he shows a lot more leadership potential than Wright does.

I truly credit Murphy for taking over the team last year when Wright went down and being the driving force of motivcation! Beltran was still in a highly repected position but he is not the motivator Murphy was in regards to the fighting aspects of the team.

That Said Mrphy is not and can not be the leader yet but if he can secure his regular position once and for all I see him as a very good candidate for the role!
But he has to win the everyday long term 2B position before he can be effective in that role!

  • If Matt Kemp didn’t exist, David Wright would be the National League Player of the Month in April. So debating whether he deserves to be player of the month on the Mets is just silly. Anybody who tries to say he isn’t POTM is just looking for a way to cut him down again.

Ike, Duda, and Bay were asleep almost all month. Which only furthers the proof how good Wright was in April considering how badly the Mets needed his production.

Jon Niese as mentioned above had 4 starts in April. His start against San Fran was below average. I’m only giving a starter pitcher of the month if he has 4 starts similar to Niese’s last one against Miami (or if no better options)
