I’m in agreement with this.
Nickeas is probably always going to be a light weight hitter. Was hoping his defense would be a plus this year but early on, he’s struggling a bit behind the plate. Still, he’s got years of experience, probably calls a good game.

We were never counting on him to be our starting catcher or even so much as platoon with Thole. Hope Thole is back soon – however I’m reading it won’t be after the 7 days b/c of his history with concussions. Here’s hoping he’s not down for the count this year.

Thanks Pete and I agree with everything you said, the guy has gotten such a negative outlook from fans when he hasn’t even had 90 at-bats in the major leagues.

The fact of the matter is he has a great arm, can throw out runners at 25-26%, has a decent call game and has the ability to hit when it counts. Thole’s defense and call game can’t hold a candle to Nickeas. Pitcher’s like throwing to Nickeas which is more than we can say about THole.

Like he said, he brings a lot of intangibles to the game that a lot of the time go otherwise unrecognized.

I just don’t get why people are so down on Nickeas. He plays good defense and calls an OK game. No, he doesn’t hit very well, but find em a back up catcher who does.

Hell, you will have trouble finding a starting catcher that makes a big splash offensively.

He’s perfectly fine in the role he plays.

He is 29 and in 10 years has a good chance to be 39.That’s ok though,Thole has the same resume.At least Nickeas seems to be good behind the dish.The Mets don’t seem to have any urgency in developing a well rounded catcher in their system since Piazza left.

The guy doesn’t hit a ton, but when he does get a hit, it seems to be in the big spots.

Good job Clayton! Nickeas is a guy that for some reason gets a lot of negative attention from Mets fans which is perplexing since he has never had the opportunity to show what he can do with any regularity. Since coming to the Mets he has been a back-up catcher. I think a lot of fans don’t realize how hard it is to be just a back-up, and to stay fresh and at the top of your game, especially at the catching position. Nickeas is very talented and deserves a chance. He may not hit like Gary or Mike, but he is the best we’ve got and he’s worked very hard to get to where he is today. He deserves the unquestioned support of every Mets fan.
