Mets News: Chris Young Tosses Five Scoreless Innings

Chris Young tossed five scoreless innings tonight as St. Lucie beat Brevard County 4-3. It was his first official minor league game since undergoing May 16, 2011 surgery to repair a torn anterior capsule in his right shoulder.

Young allowed five hits and two walks while striking out four batters.

Young is expected to make 3-4 more minor league starts at a higher level before joining the Mets rotation sometime in June.

Young, 32, made four very solid starts for the Mets last season, posting a 1.88 ERA in 24 innings pitched.

Despite undergoing season ending surgery to repair a torn capsule in his right shoulder, the Mets decided to bring him back and signed him to a minor league deal in March.

  • Look he was going against 20 year olds tonight but Young showed last year that he knows how to pitch. Even if he only can get 5-6 innings once back I bet they will be better than the alternatives. Also interesting in that the Mets are where he wants to be and supposed he chose them over other offers.

  • Great first start on the way back to Mets!

  • Crossing my fingers he stays healthy. I think he’s better than the immediate options we have right now.

  • Brief candle that he was last April, he did look impressive. I wish him all the success in the world.

If, if, if… he can stay healthy, he really could be a contributor. Go get ‘em, CY!

  • If Chris Young stays in one piece, he’s both a personal winner and a baseball comeback winner. This guy knows how to pitch, and he’s very good.

  • Hoping Chris does well but last season I had hesitations about his pitching ability along with his ability to pitch and thought the front office was taking a gamble in hoping he would be able to fill in one of the holes of our starting rotation which was a major concern going into last season.

There still has to be continued concerned with a starter who now has suffered major injury each of the last four seasons which has limited him to a total 220 innings beginning in 2008.

Yes, Chris looked great in his brief stint with the Mets last year and being so tall (like Rauch) when letting go of the ball it has maybe a foot or so less distance to go compared to the average pitcher. That extra foot is a huge advantage.

Now if Chris does stay healthy and successful in the early going, we will have to see whether or not it’s also due to the hitters have to familiarize themselves once more with a pitcher they really haven’t seen much of. That was the case with Chris Cappuano (who got off to a great start with L.A.) last season – started off strong, kept his velocity in check all season, but the hitters got re-acquainted with him and really began to tee off on his pitches.

Let’s hope he does come back – a healthy and effective Young along with Santana, Dickey, Neise and Gee would be the envy of every other team in the league – including Philly!

  • If I’m not mistaken his injuries before coming to the Mets were all due to the shoulder. He elected rehab each time rather than surgery. Last year he elected surgery. If he’s fixed he can be very effective. I like the low risk high reward here.
