Nathan, Mulvey gave himself until this birthday to give baseball a shot. He’s a smart guy who’s like is planned out outside baseball and he has chosen to stop making lousy money. I commend him for the smart decision regarding life.

We Mets fans hate when we see this happen, but the math just doesn’t work for most of these “top 1%” guys.

You may have answered your own question there!

Dickey has the will and drive to succeed and that has probably translated into his success where maybe Mulvey just never had that internal makeup needed to get to the next level.

And while most of us think how great it would be to get paid to play baseball, We don’t really understand what it means to play in the Minors, the rigors, the tedium, the Busses, the living out in the middle of nowhere that goes along with sticking it out in the Minor Leagues.

These guys pay their dues and they don’t have that Million Dollar contract to fall back on when they retire until they get to the MLB and stick 4 or 5 years.

Not easy to get a job if your over 30 these days and even harder if you don’t have the years of experience expected of someone that old.

So I can see some guy who feels he has hit his peak but that wasn’t good enough deciding the dream is over it’s time to find a career that will take him until he really is ready to retire for the rest of his life.

It’s a shame when someone with so much promise can’t achieve it, but thats why we have a Minor Leagues in the first place, to seperate those who have the guts and tenacity to achieve from those who don’t!

I am perplexed by Mulvey’s decision to retire. I know this is the path for most players but he showed good promise at one point. I wonder what makes one guy quit at 26 and what makes Dickey stick it out until he is in his thirties.

During this “official” start to the summer with kids getting out of school and all the buzz about sales and barbecues let me add my two cents an Air Force veteran that we never forget to honor those who put their lives between us and those that would do us harm.
