Jenrry Mejia Promoted To Triple-A Buffalo
During last night’s Mets telecast on SNY, general manager Sandy Alderson announced that RHP Jenrry Mejia will be promoted from Binghamton to Triple-A Buffalo today.
Mejia made his fourth start of the season pitching for the B-Mets yesterday and went five innings against the New Britain Rock Cats, giving up four runs (all earned) on five hits, with five strikeouts and three walks. He threw 75 pitches, 44 for strikes.
Terry Collins had previously said that Mejia could join the big-league club and pitch out of the bullpen in relief at some point this season. Alderson echoed those sentiments and said it’s possible Mejia could join the Mets bullpen later this season.
Mejia is 1-0 with a 3.79 ERA in four rehab starts between Single-A and Double-A this month.
Man, it’s really getting crowded in Buffalo… But it looks like the top three starters for the Bisons will now be Matt Harvey, Jeurys Familia and now Jenrry Mejia. Meanwhile back in Binghamton, look for Darin Gorski to replace Mejia and get back into the rotation. At least that’s what Pete tells me…

He’ll be here before the 4th of July.
Sandy also said he will be put in the pen…
Not sure I like that decision but perhaps it will just be for this year as he comes back from the surgery and they will start fresh next year in ST.
Agreed Metsie. Mejia needs a full year in AAA Buffalo before getting another crack at the ML level. If they’re putting him in the pen, they probably are in the process of grooming him to be a closer. Of course, later on down the road, if need be, Mejia could return as a starter (see Neftali Feliz).
It makes sense (Bullpen) in regards to you don’t want to put too many innings on him after surgery and ease him back into stretching out as the goal right now is to build up muscle strength not so much endurance.
I get the feeling is they are a little less concerned about rushing Mejia due to his already having half a season in the MLB and if the Pen needs help both him and Beato are probably the best options to go to in the Minors.
I prefer they don’t give up on trying him as a starter as it’s better to shoot for the higher ceiling and return.
But I can see where they might ease him back by putting him in the pen of the MLB squad let him pitch some innings but not too many to overtax him, then give him a full offseason of rest then get him ready as a starter next spring and let him fight for a rotation spot. Then if he fails at that you can decide if his destiny is best served in the pen.
Harvey Familia will also be fighting for spots next spring and the list of potential rotation guys are:
Santana (Lock)
Dickey (Lock if the option is renewed and likly will be)
Niese (I think a lock due to his extention but a bad season could change some minds here)
Harvey
Familia
Gee
Mejia
Thats 7 guys for 5 rotation spots and whoever doesn’t make it is likely put in the pen or traded.
And I’m fine with that if Mejia is one of them because he was beaten out by the others.
That said I would not expect them to make a decision to promote Mejia to the MLB until after the trading deadline and then only if we are still fighting for a playoff and need the pen help.
