Since the 5th Wheeler cruised retiring every hitter he faced until the 7th where Wheeler gave up a 1 out double off the wall that just missed being a HR. It was followed with a single that dropped into LF for a basehit and ending the shutout. He then got a strikeout and a long flyball to end the 7th.

He is at 90 pitches 68 for strikes or 76%. Wheeler was just pinch hit for so he is done for the night.

Off Topic: with no Mets game I got to listen to Wheeler pitch and what a game so far! The kid is just flat out dominating the Reading Phillies through 5 innings. He has faced 1 more than the minimum through 5 innings which was a single. He has 6 K’s through 5 no walks and out of 63 pitches he has thrown 48 of them for strikes. That is 76% of his pitches so far for strikes.

On top of that the BMets scored 8 runs with the SS Josh Rodriguez hitting a 3 run HR.

Also the BMets announcer mentioned in the 1st inning that Wheeler has a different change-up grip he has been using his last 4 or 5 starts which he credits to Mets pitching coordinator Ron Romanick.

Couple of questions.
When coming back from an injury like Mejia's what is the biggest concern? Arm strength. Can you build that pitching one inning at a time on an inconsistent basis in AAA?

Next, when a reliever is doing rehab work in the minors, when do they pitch especially in the beginning of the rehab assignment? At the beginning of the game. Why? Because you can control the environment, how long he goes and keep another starter on normal rest.

So to me with a #8 starter in the rotation and Young not ready yet there is absolutely no reason for him to pitch in the pen in AAA. Honestly what difference would it make if he was starting or relieving in AAA? I want him getting the most work in that he can.

he's basically still someplace between rehab and spring training. Getting healthy and getting his work in (and timing/mechanics down) are really the priority now.

Sandy's comments about Jenrry Mejia left much to be said and his use now as a starter adds to the confusion. BTW, Mejia had a great game. The kid is something special but if he's used as a starter, his K count per inning will go down.

He is coming back from injury and needs guaranteed innings to build up arm strength. You can't get that as a closer in AAA. Besides with a #8 starter in the #5 spot and Young not ready yet why burn an option for the #5 spot until necessary?

Why are they still using Mejia in the rotation if the plan is to have him work out of the bullpen??? It makes no sense to me why he isn't being groomed as a reliever right now so we can bring him up as soon as we can and avoid all the hiccups.

Nice to see Jenrry progressing. He'll be needed sooner than later, I'm thinking.
