Collin McHugh – Buffalo Bound?
Two days ago the Buffalo Bisons rotation was crowded with arms: Harvey, Familia, Hefner, Schwinden, and Olson. Two days ago the B-Mets rotation was burgeoning with talented arms: McHugh, Wheeler, Germen, Gorski, Peavey, Cohoon, and now, Mejia.
Well two days later the B-Mets rotation is still over-loaded, and the Buffalo rotation is thinned after being raided for arms by the big league club and suddenly looks like this: Harvey, Familia, Olson, and Owen. With 23 games in the next 24 days, the Bisons are going to need some fortification to the rotation.
The best candidate of the bunch to be called up from Binghamton is RHP Collin McHugh who has done everything he needs to do at the AA level, and now needs the challenge he would get on the top rung of the ladder.
His numbers this year are 4-2 with a 2.05 ERA, his AA totals: 24 starts, 12-4 with a 2.60 ERA.
Everyone wants to know if McHugh is really a prospect, if he can succeed as a major league pitcher? Well we are never going to find out if he is left to languish in AA. Let’s give him a chance to get some big boys out! Call him up!
About the Author: Peter Shapiro
The first time I went to Shea was not for a Mets game, it was for the Beatles concert there in August of '66. My first Met game was '67, a guy named Salty Parker was the interim-manager then. My first pennant race was 1969. As a 12 year-old that summer and fall, I managed to get to the park for 3 games. The first was the beginning of the Miracle which actually started on Tuesday July 8, 1969 with a day game against the Cubs. I was there a lot in '73. I saw games 3 & 5 of the 1973 NL Playoffs against the "Big Red Machine", from the upper deck behind home plate. It was from there that I witnessed the fight between Bud Harrelson and Pete Rose, and the mayhem that ensued. And that sweet victory in game 5! I saw a couple of WS games at Shea that year against that legendary Oakland A's club. I was there in 1985 for every single game Dr. K pitched including his two 16 strikeout performances, and the day he one-hit the Cubs on an infield single and the Mets won 1-0. I loved being a Met fan in those days. Hopefully we are once again preparing to emerge from the darkness.

Those are incredible numbers, I hope he gets promoted soon!
You do a great job here with covering the Mets minor leagues. It’s a pleasure coming here now since you got rid of Pomes. Thanks!
Names like Duda, Thole, Gee were never on any top prospects list so thanks for the McHugh
update. I also see St. L. catcher Blake Forsythe’s numbers are starting to rise as well as closer
Adrian Rosario, he replaced Josh Edgin. Josh had a rough beginning in AAA but it looks like
he’s adjusting well. Has the St. L. ss been promoted yet?
Hi Peter –
I remember the day the Beatles performed at Shea in 1966. All of my older sisters and my brother went to that performance. I remember being in the living room as they were getting ready to leave, thrilled beyond words.
I missed you at the “Harrelson-Rose” match in 1973. I was 12 years old then and went to the game with my Dad. Unbelievable game, so glad we won. I loved Buddy for mixing it up with Rose, and told myself he was winning even when Rose had him on his back. I’ll never forget that moment. BTW, my favorite all-time Met is Jerry Grote.
I agree with your comments about McHugh. It’s about time this organization dedicates itself to giving a true assessment of the talent in the minor leagues. While not every prospect will pan out, the knowledge that a prospect can be promoted by merit in the Mets farm system sends a very powerful message to all farmhands. I believe the long-term gains will manifest sooner than we think and names such as Carson, Edgin, Gorski, Mejia & Co. will be known to Met fans at Citi Field.
Take care.
He should’ve started the year at AAA from Jump Street. He did better last season than both Harvey & Familia and pitched around the same amount of innings they did, yet he stayed put in Binghamton? There’s nothing left for him in AA.
