Batista Dominates In A Shaky 3-1 Mets Win

Recap

He came up to the mound, everyone doubting him and he shocked the world. Miguel Batista was on fire tonight! He dominated the Brewers tonight and lasted longer than most of our starters do. Going seven strong innings, only allowing four hits, one walk, striking out five and at one point set down 12 of 13 batters he faced. He impressed me and impressed everyone. He’ll earn himself one more start. He walks away with the win, his first of the season.

Byrdak and Parnell keeps the pitching going with combining for a hitless eighth inning.

Frank Francisco came in with a three run lead and only had to get three outs to get the save. I mean come on, Batista can do it, it shouldn’t be that hard. Gives up a lead off single, allows a stolen base, gets one out, gives up an rbi single, walks the next batter, gets a strikeout and finally gets the third out. $5MM for this closer and we once again have to watch between our fingers and biting our nails. Francisco this season now 22 hits and 8 walks in 14 IP. However, came through this time and gets his ninth save of the season.

The Mets didn’t have many hits in this game. In fact only had two hits and two runs entering the eighth, but then the magical duo of Wright and Murphy and were able to give the Mets a three run cushion for Francisco. Luckily he was able to hold on this time.

Wright had one hit, a double, a run, and a walk. Murphy had two hits, an RBI and a run.

Mets haven’t walked much this season but drew six of them tonight, and Kirk Niewenhuis had a stolen base as well, something else the Mets haven’t done much this season.

Ronnie Cedeno didn’t have a hit today but made a great suicide squeeze bunt to score Murphy.

Ike Davis’ season continues to snowball down going 0-4 with two strikeouts and left six men on base.

Notes

Familia had seven Ks in five innings pitched for Buffalo tonight.

Daniel Murphy has a 10 game hitting streak now. Makes me wonder who will have a higher batting average at the season’s end, Wright or Murphy.

Extend Wright petition continues as Wright makes a stellar play at third in the eighth and gets his ninth double. Has hit 18 of the last 19 games. Hitting just under .400 at the end of the game. Mr. Captain is on fire!

Game Ball

Miguel Batista. The Mets had no offense and had to rely on Francisco again, but we’re able to win thanks to him.

Up Next

Mets have their work cut out for them facing former Cy Young, Zack Greinke and the Brewers. Dillon Gee starts for the Mets. Game time is 7:05 pm.

  • way to go batista , nice game overall, francisco makes it exciting as usual :) LETS GO METS

  • OK so I have to give credit where it’s due and say well done Batista on a solid pitching effort tonight going 7 innings and giving up no runs.

Now that that is out of the way I was concerned with how little the Mets bats were able to do against the Brewers. Talk about making the most of 3 hits.

Props once again to Byrdak & Parnell on a clean 8th inning. Francisco you owe Collins for sticking with you I hope you don’t make him regret it.

Positives for me will be Batista rewarding Collins with a solid start for sticking with him.

The New York Mets after 35 games are 20-15. Can they go 6 games above .500? Just have to wait till 2morrow to find out.

    LGM!!!

    • Pleasantly surprised he let Batista go back out for the 7th. I though for sure he was yanking him after 6. Much less adventurous when the pen only needs to get 6 outs rather than 9. I think Gallardo had a little to do with how little the bats did. Even with the 6 walks, he’s tough to hit.

    • I think people forget that Batista really is a Starter and most of our issues with him were due to putting him in a pen and he was not getting his consistency a starter really needs to get his stuff working.

He;s not going to have a lot of dominating games thats not the type of pitcher he is but he can serve as a decent 5th starter if given the chance.

If anyone has a problem with Batista they should not put it on batista but on the fact we all knew there was a good chance to lose a starter with Santana coming back from surgery and did not prepare for that. If we had Pelfrey getting hurt would have been prepared for!

      • Hey I think we both said something similar:

First of all I asked how someone like Miggy could be so good last year in a small sample but so bad this year. I guess it’s possible that the guy is just an awful reliever but decent spot starter.
As a Met Batista has a 3.21 ERA in 8 starts. Does he give me a warm and fuzzy feeling? Uh no. Obviously at his age and ability he doesn’t go very deep in games usually. Also that has to do with the fact that he is always being stretched out from a reliever. Last nights 7 innings had the Brewers guessing all night which is exactly what you want out of a swing man.

He is what he is and for some reason people don’t look past that. It’s not a sexy name or flashy stats but for his career he has 246 starts and a 4.45 ERA. I will take that for a swing-man any day.”

  • Way to come through, Batista!

I wouldn’t get used to this if I were you, but…gotta take the good ones when we can.

As for Fat Frank, I just dunno. He’s done little to nothing to inspire confidence since his shutdown of the Bravos on Opening Day.

On the other hand, I think COllins is really doing right by him. If, only if, FF can get a few good innings under his belt, selects pitches more carefully, and exercises control, he can put some quality appearances together. It’s a fickle thing–this closing–my friends. Say prayers for Fat Frank!

    LGM!!!

  • Call me foolish, but I think we have to admire the fight in FF, too. I mean, he isn’t making excuses for sucking, and he at least talks as if he’s a team guy who always wants to win.

Yeah, small comfort for his failures, but, again, maybe he starts turning it around now. I know it will be quite a while before any of us feel comfortable whenever he comes in to close, but it sure would be great if we have basically seen him at his worst in April and May rather than August and September.

    • Zanca — FOOLISH. lol. Actually I agree with you. I hope he turns it around very soon!!!!

  • Extend Wright petition continues as Wright makes a stellar play at third in the eighth and gets his ninth double. Has hit 18 of the last 19 games. Hitting just under .400 at the end of the game. Mr. Captain is on fire!”

So are you admitting he IS playing for a contract extension???? Mr Captain???

    • I don’t buy it myself as he has another year locked in anyway but lets play along. What if he is? Would it matter? Does that mean they should not sign him because if so wouldn’t that also mean they shouldn’t have signed Reyes.

    • Why you always bring up reyes into the equation? Since you brought him up, i will ask you, isn’t fair to look at what he’s doing on a year where he might get traded and needs to prove his value? If he does get traded and have a career year doesn’t he get to opt out? making him a FA? you guys are just too funny, he’s the only person/player on the face of the earth who do no wrong.. WOW.. Other players play for contracts but not wright, he plays for the love of the game and that’s it.

      • I never said that he was playing for the love of the game. That’s foolish. I am saying so what if his next contract, be it this year or after next year, is PART of the reason for him being better? Does that mean we shouldn’t sign him because after that he will not play as hard or concentrate as much? If so then they should have also had those same fears about Reyes. You guys always want it to work both ways. Why am I bringing up Reyes? Because he is the last star the Mets had to play way above his career norms the only difference is he actually was in a contract year.

        • Right, so basically you’re saying wright is not playing for a contract extension? he’s playing WAY ABOVE his career because he’s david wright? MR Captain? is that is? last i checked, reyes BA was higher, everything else he did was on par with his career, triples, some double, Rbi’s, etc… Not sure what you mean by “he is the last star the Mets had to play way above his career norms”. look up his numbers and see what i mean. You only said that because wright is your boy and you always wanna make him look good no matter at what cost!

          • Come on Alex, 56 points above his career average in BA, 43 points above in OBP, 55 points above his SLG %, 39 points above his OPS+. His OPS+ was 19 points higher than his BEST season.

Also, I have already admitted that perhaps playing for an extension could enter Wright’s mind. I have also said that I think last year he was pissed at himself for letting his teammates and himself down. I think those two things combined with being healthy could have lead to this hot start. I do know that offensively and defensively he supposedly worked his tail off much of the off-season with Timmy T and his college coach.

My point remains, so what if playing for an extension was part of his motivation? Does that mean they should not extend him? Because if it does then that would have also applied to Reyes.

  • Ike Davis’ season continues to snowball down going 0-4 with two strikeouts and left six men on base.”

This is what has often happened to the royals and the pirates.. Put their eggs is highly touted prospect and then… They flop, making the franchise be set back even more.. I think ike is feeling the pressure of not having a beltran in the lineup to protect him. We all knew beltran was the thumper on this team which allowed davis to be more of a line drive with power hitter.. Now, he needs to be the guy therefore he’s struggling.. There’s a bunch of OBP guys on the team but no thumper, ike is pressuring too much IMO

    • Ike may be pressing too much but it’s not due to having no protection. It’s due to the gigantic hole in his swing, poor pitch recognition and swinging at anything and everything off the plate.

The guy is killing us. He by far has the most PA with RISP on the team and is coming up small over and over.

    • Right…I am sure he’s only pressing for that now that you said it.. SMH..
You don’t think players feel the pressure when they are view to carry a team etc?

      • Davis is viewed as someone that must carry the team? Seriously, how do you make this stuff up?

      • If he is that mentally weak then he was destined to fail anyway.

      • Let me ask you this buddddddyyyy… How much protection did Beltran give Davis last year? Can you explain?

      • I Usually don’t respond to people like you who do nothing but wait for someone to comment so you can then say something, but i will tell you, who is the thumper on this team? Who’s from the get go the guy who was slotted as the #4 hitter due to his power and strenght?
Do You realize the kid had 7 HR and 25 RBI’s last year by may 10th? while hitting 300 with 380 OBP and 580 slug %?
Part of it was beltran hitting 300 with 8 HR and 26 RBI’s.. We all know who the best hitter in the middle of the lineup was, Ike was free to just be himself… Fast forward now, he may be feeling the pressure of being that thumper, specially since everyone is so gung ho with OBP and taking pitches

        • Alex, do you know how many times Beltran hit after Davis in their Met careers?

So you are saying that Ike feels pressure that he has to hit HR because Beltran is gone? And that last year because he had Beltran he thought he could be a line drive hitter? That is about the most foolish thing I have ever heard you say.

Also, now you are switching back to your attack on OBP. Maybe you should ask Keith what he now thinks about this Met offense and approach. As he said last night it’s not a team focused on the walk it is a team full of players with good eyes at the plate. Keep in mind that the guy you are wishing we had back exemplified this approach. Last year his OBP for the Mets was over 100 points higher than his BA. I guess he did that by hacking away. Good lord since when did not making an out become a bad thing?

    • Feeling the pressure of not having Beltran? What are you talking about? They played about 60 games together in 2010, and last year barely a cup of coffee together before Davis was out all year.

    • Alex68 — Your stuff about Ike, Wright and Reyes is the stuff of fairy tales.
      1) Originally you tried to say anything negative abouit Reyes was off limits because, as you pleaded, he was from the DR. I should be more understanding you said.
      2) You have also said for a million times that Wright is UNCLUTCH, even though you never could define what it means. In the past you looked at something Wright did or didn’t do and said it was because he was UNCLUTCH. Again, you only looked at results you wanted to disparage and implied it was because of something David lacked. You and your lackey friends such as Bayonne kept it up endlessly.
      3) Now some of you are saying David’s success is tied to a contract situation. Suddenly the UNCLUTCH argument has disappeared faster than a pair of hubcaps on the Grand Central Parkway. He must now be CLUTCH, must he not?
      4) Now you’re implying that Ike Davis is UNCLUTCH since without Beltran, a player who never asked to be dragged into your fantasy, Ike can’t cut the cake. Beltran is Beltran, and though I expect Ike to get back on track, he’s no Beltran

Hilarious. Fraudulent facts and bogus conclusions are what Alex68 is all about.

      • Hit the target a couple of times and then wait for them to move the target. Yet never once any evidence to support the incredibly outlandish theories.

      • This coming from the same guy who said TEjada is a bum, ike davis sucks and reese havens will be some sort of godsend… Shut TFU Des, you obviously are what i thought you were when you took that route about jose reyes being from the DR is the reason he was dumb…
And to answer you’re question, yes, to me DW is STILL unclutch until proven otherwise, this team we all knew is not going anywhere and imo they won’t, some players do not feel the pressure to perform as before based on hyped etc.. He can now play as good as he can or as bad as he can and we will be fine because this team enter the season with ZERO EXPECTATION!!!!
Good for him that is doing good, but it’s ironic and amazing how when another player is doing good we get to attached him with contract talk or extention.. But not MR CAPTAIN, David wright.. He does everything the wright way!!

        • I did find one thing interesting, moving on from your whinny debate.

In the article about Wright’s extension they mentioned how Mets officials believed that Wright was more interested in staying.

“The Mets always believed Reyes would sign with whichever team offered him the most money. They are optimistic that Wright’s affinity for New York will play a greater role in negotiations with him.”

I wonder if that was because Reyes took more of a discount the first time, didn’t want to remain in NY to start with, I am not really sure what to make of that comment. As for Wright having more of a draw to stay in NY? I could see that. He grew up a Mets fan and loves the NY life. Reyes I think had to be drawn by the Miami culture even if he was torn about wanting to stay in NY which we will never know.

        • One more thing, so you are saying that Wright is playing well because he is looking for a contract and the team has no pressure but Ike is playing poorly because he doesn’t have Beltran to protect him and is feeling pressured.

          LOL, OK buddddddy.

          • Another day, another excuse. It never ends.

          • Even you cannot be this stupid… When the team was entering the season as the team to beat in the NL you don’t think players were feeling the pressure? Ask Wright about his K in 2008… The thing with davis is he’s viewed as the thumper of this team.. Wright has only 4 HR all season..

            • Answer the question. You think that Wright is playing well because there is no pressure and he is playing for a contract. (Those two things contradict themselves already.) Yet you also think that Ike is playing poorly because he doesn’t have Beltran’s protection (even though he never hit behind Ike) and is feeling pressure to carry the team? Is that correct?

As for Ike, if he truly is feeling the pressure of trying to be a HR hitter then maybe he should stop. Come on, we all hope that Ike shakes out of this but he is just a mess right now and it’s not because of protection or pressure other than the pressure of sucking it up through May.

            • Ike enter the season with more pressure than wright, wright is playing for a contract extention, ike is playing to establish himself as one of the best 1B in the game as he was touted as. Wright is playing more loosely imo because the team had no expectations to win, making it easy for him to be as goof as he has been imo. If he struggle and did bad he’d be traded and that’s it.. Although he should be now that he’s on fire. get as many kids in the minors as we can, isn’t that the plan?

              • LOL, I don’t get the logic. So Ike is feeling pressure because he is supposed to be a top 1B and Wright is playing loosely because he is playing for his next contract?

        • Alex68 — You’re a sad case, repeatedly claiming I said things I never said.

          1) I NEVER said Tejada was a bum. He’s not. I think his ceiling is that of an average SS.

          2) I NEVER said Ike Davis sucks. Where do you get your info? Certainly not here on MMO. He’s had some trouble with his swing mechanics. Everybody knows it but not everybody is able to diagnose it.

          3) I NEVER said Reese Havens is some sort of a godsend. His potential in my view is better than Ruben Tejada’s if he ever gets past his injuries.

          4) Don’t tell me to STFU. It degrades you as a common, vile person. You’re defining yourself, not defining me.

          5) You seem envious and resentful of David Wright. You can do better than you’re doing. It’s up to you.

          6) You wanted special favorable treatment for Jose — treatment for a guy who demanded six years and $100 Million bucks, while most workers have to get by with $40K to $60K yearlly. He and his agent, Peter Greenberg, must have thought they would be able to diddle with the Mets through the press. Only the greatest players can pull off that Ringling Brothers stunt. Certainly Jose and Peter can’t. My own view is that Jose, a fine but no longer great player, will be traded by the Marlins before Year 4. Check out his contract for reasons why this is likely.

  • If u check FF’s track record he is a career so so relief pitcher with a high ERA and a 70 per cent save average as a closer.Basically he stunk before he got here and he will stink 2 months from now if he is still here.Looks like Collins will try to milk a few more saves out of him if he can before he tries someone else.I thought he took a big risk using him last nite. How will Collins trust him in a one run save opportunity?

    • Kind of a Catch 22 in my mind.
If we have even a remote chance of trading FF at the trade deadline, we’ve almost got to show he’s a closer and is somewhat effective. Remove him from that role and that limits that chance considerably.
Leave him in that role and there’s probably a 50/50 chance he blows the lead for us.

      Sigh…..

  • “$5MM for this closer and we once again have to watch between our fingers and biting our nails.”

So, we’re getting a discount this year?

  • Has anyone noticed how Murphy has changed his swing from last year. I have not heard it mentioned by the TV guys. He is a slasher now and not pulling like he did last year. It’s working for his average, but his extra bases and HR’s should be less.

    • I wouldn’t necessarily call it a slasher but yeah the end result will be less extra base hits but a higher average. Honestly maybe he just decided to be a #2 hitter.

  • give baxter a start at fistbase
