Acosta And His 10.53 ERA Survives As Mets Cut Schwinden To Make Room For Rottino

Right-hander Chris Schwinden officially has been optioned back to Triple-A Buffalo to make room for Vinny Rottino is back with the Mets.

Manny Acosta has more lives than a cat…

Original Post 8:00 AM

According to Adam Rubin, a baseball source says that the Mets are expected to re-call utility player Vinny Rottino ifrom Triple-A Buffalo and that he will rejoin the Mets in time for tonight’s game in Pittsburgh.

Rottino is having a fine season in Buffalo batting 307/.361/.469 in 140 at-bats. He is second on the team with 25 RBI and has ten doubles, four home runs and five stolen bases.

The Mets have been playing with a 4-man bench and it is expected they will cut a pitcher to make room for Rottino. My guess is that Manny Acosta could be released and that the Mets will keep Chris Schwinden to see if he could be a fit as a long-man type in the bullpen.

  • Huh, interesting choice… And acosta sucks, but so does schwindel..

  • Figured Rottino would get that call up for the bench spot starting this series, since we’re back to playing the NL.

And my guess would be Acosta as well. If they send Schwinden back down, we’re left w/o a long man in the BP, since Terry stated Hefner will be making what would have been Batista’s next spot.

    • guess that role is filled by Manny and Carson. And just hope there aren’t any early exits by the SP any time soon.

  • Flip a coin or keep Schwinden as lefty in pen.

  • He’s only played one game at first so he won’t fill-in for Ike if he’s sent down.

The fact that he’s hitting .300 with Buffalo doesn’t really mean much considering he has a .295 lifetime BA down under yet has been buried in the minors for eight years. Could be that insiders see little in his mechanics to indicate the potential of making it in the majors.

Or maybe the Met organization saw something in him when he was signed as a free agent last year that the other’s didn’t. He’s hit just .175 in 40 plate appearances in the majors – too little to judge on those stats – but again, it’s those eight years in the minors that concerns me.

    • positional flexibility?

      • Considering he played catcher last night? Very well could be.

  • Acosta goes first. Bring on Egbert.

  • If that bum stays, give Ike at least till the end of the Bucs series.

  • only way the move makes sense is that they still think there is a chance Acosta can rediscover what he had the 2nd half last season, and that they are trying to hoard as much pitching in the system as possible.

this way, they have both guys for the time being. Though I gotta figure Acosta has pretty much played out all of his rope by now, so it may not be for long that he survives.

I do like having Rotttino back up though.

  • Keeping Acosta? Over Schwinden who can at least fill the long man role? I don’t get this. Someone will need to explain it to me…..

    • SRT I think Collins quote of being sure “that we wring the rag dry” to describe why Ike has not been sent down will fit here as well.

      • LOL…I missed that SA quote….

  • Rottino in tonight’s lineup.

    Monday lineup at Pittsburgh: Torres-CF, Turner-2B, Wright-3B, Hairston-LF, Duda-RF, Rottino-1B, Cedeno-SS, Nickeas-C, Santana-LHP

    • Oh boy….that’s one anemic line-up.
Pittsburg’s got McCutchen in there, we’ve got Wright. After that, looks like it comes down to the pitching.

      • Torres has struggled over his last 9 games so it’s imperative that he gets it going so has Nickeas over his last 7 games but Rottino you have to think can’t do any worse than Ike has plus I like having Turner and Hairston in the lineup.

        • Torres becoming ice cold now too is another kick in the head the line up did not need.

    • Shoot, we need Murph in there!

  • Despite his pathetic performance so far this season, Acosta has been one of our few bright spots out the bullpen the previous two years and has respectable seasons four of his five years with the Braves and Mets.

To show how bad a year he is having thus far, from my rough math his poor 2012 start has raised his career ERA from 3.40 to 4.04. Just 20 innings added to the 200 he had entering the season has seen his lifetime average jump almost 2/3 a run per game,

Let us hope this is just a very bad first quarter of the season and nothing more.

  • Hope Rottino’s minor league success transends to the majors. The Mets need another spark. I think Baxter desrves more playing time when a righty is pitching. He has been right on the ball as David and Murph have been. Need Thole back too.

    • Play Baxter at first

      • When Terry was specifically asked a couple of days ago about getting Baxter’s bat in the line-up on a more consistent basis – and would he consider Baxter at 1st if Ike were sent down, Terry responded with something along the lines that he’s not inclined to play Baxter at 1st.
        Not exactly sure why……

  • I gather the reason Rottino was called up instead of either Josh Satin (who has played both corner infield positions and is hitting well at triple-A Buffalo) or Juan Lageres (who can play the outfield and is doing the same type of hitting at Double-A Binghampton) is because possibly being our future both need regular playing time unlike the 32 year old Rottino who is not and thus can afford long stretches sitting on the bench.

    • It really is normal to not call up top prospects to be spare parts, and likely yoyo up and down. If they aren’t ready (and it would be a stretch to say Lagares was close) and aren’t going to get regular PT, don’t call them up.

Satin? he is not a prospect really. Probably at best he can spend some time in the majors as a utility bench guy, but he is more like Rottino than a real prospect you need to worry about.

I assume Vinny got the call because he plays a few extra positions (having a 3rd catcher is always nice, especially considering the nominal starter at the moment isn’t much of a hitter!)

  • Meh. He’ll be released soon.

  • Can anyone in our bullpen get someone out? I’m so tired of seeing the bullpen lose us game after game.
