I know I’m showing my age but I will always remember him as Bob Murphy described him during his first year – “Rookie” John Sterns.
Murph used that rookie tag so much that first year I would subconsciously hear it when anyone mentioned him for the rest of his tenure with the Mets.

I also recall a story he told in an interview. While in the minors, there was a pitcher who though his fastball was really good. He would not throw anything else. Stearns called for the fast ball and then caught it in his bare hand. He did not say who the pitcher was.

I remember Stearns was also pretty good on the bases and one season he led the team in stolen bases with 25 swipes.

Two things I remember about Stearns:
The time he came running from dugout after a pitcher who had just hit Mike Jorgensen with a pitch.
2nd was he was driving out of the parking lot at Shea and a couple of kids were chasing his car. He stopped and gave them the autograph they wanted and also told them not to chase cars in parking the lot.
