The MetsMerizedOnline Player of the Week for this week has shown he has a great impact on this team. This week includes the double-header against the Giants, the 3 game sweep against the Marlins, and the weekend series against the Rockies for a total of 8 games. Here is our MMO Player of the Week for 4/23/2012-4/29/2012:

Despite not having any wins this week between his two starts, the Mets won both games. Santana had an absolutely stellar start Tuesday against the Marlins, holding them to 1 run through 6.2 innings, striking out 11. Yesterday, the Mets finally scored with him on the mound, spotting him a 4-0 lead, which he left with, but the bullpen blew the lead and he wound up with two non-decisions this week.

Honorable Mentions

These players, although not winning the Player of the Week award, had a very strong showing this week and deserve to be recognized. We will also show how strong a showing they had through the use of the scorecard.

Trivia

To finish off the Player of the Week announcement each week, I’ll be asking you a trivia question. The answer will be announced during the next Player of the Week announcement, as well as the first person who answered correctly. Another question will then be asked. Last Week’s Answer is: Pittsburgh Pirates. Alex68 was the first person to correctly answer the question. So here is this week’s question:

What Met was traded for himself?

  • Tyler,

Sorry, i slighty, very slightly disagree… Ruben tejada should’ve been the POTW… He was ON FIRE during the week, specially in colorado.. Had not been for that revamped bullpen we might’ve swept the rockies… Even duda should’ve been mention above santana… But i see you go with #57..
This week my pick for MMO POTW will be: Daniel Murphy…

To answer your question,Harry Chiti.. 1962?

    • I can see Ruben being the guy. I think for sure he had an incredible series but what about the rest of the week? He did have 10 of those hits in the last 3 games.
As for Johan, hard to fault 12 innings of one run ball with 16K’s. It will be nice if Terry ever allows him to actually pitch again.

    • Yeah.. But remember, it’s better to take it easy on him NOW, then risk losing him for the season or for an extended period..

      • I agree to an extent but 90 pitches is too soon IMO. I would have let him go one more inning and then perhaps you avoid some of the drama last night.

      • TRS86, 4 run lead can’t be protected?? Come on, he did his job.. I agree with collins, no need to forced the issue with him… He’s still recovering and regaining his form.. I think collins is doing a well enough job with him… I rather have johan healthy all season and aproachin 170 to 200 innings than not have him at all in this rotation woudln’t you agree?

        • It’s 90 pitches though Alex. At least bring him out for the 7th.

        • Alex, I agree with you. Bookmark this. This is historical. You’re right, the bullpen needs to hold a four run lead and Johan needs all the rest he can get right now, especially when it’s 55 degrees. I’ve been very critical of Terry’s bullpen management recently, but not yesterday. Yesterday he played it right.

          • I was expecting to see parnell in the 8th, with Rauch held back for the 9th (in a non-save situation). So seeing it paly out the way it did, I wonder if they are looking at Parnell as the closer in waiting (cold be a short wait the way FF is going!)

            • I think Terry really wanted to get out there with a win, and Parnell got hit around pretty good Friday by the Rockies. If he was going to pitch, it would have been instead of Batista, not Rauch. After Batista got the call, I had the feeling that Parnell and Ramirez had the night off.

          • Like I said I don’t think asking Johan to go 100 pitches is too much.

            • Then again, you wanna give the advantage to the bullpen, bring them up with noone on base and to start the inning… Johan did his job so …

    • “Had not been for that revamped bullpen”

I like that. Because last year’s bullpen never blew games. Shame on the Mets for acquiring better relief pitchers because they had a rough game.

    • Alex,

Both Tejada and Duda were under consideration, but ultimately I chose Santana for his great job this week. Starting pitchers’ performances tend to go undervalued when it comes to this type of thing, and some people think only position players should get it, but if I feel a starting pitcher is more deserving, he’ll get it. Thanks for the input though!
As for your comment that the revamped bullpen cost the Mets a sweep, I completely disagree. The starting pitcher Friday, Chris Schwinden, gave up 6 runs (although 5 were earned), he was with the Mets last season. Manny Acosta gave up 7 runs in a third of an inning, he was here last year. Just looking at two pitchers who were here last year for that game, you have 13 runs given up, more than half. Don’t blame the revamped bullpen when most of the runs were attributed to pitchers here last year. Only new pitcher who gave up runs in that game was Ramon Ramirez who gave up 4, 3 earned.

  • The answer would be catcher Harry Chiti, an original 1962 Met.

  • I understand that and I am not knocking Johan at all. It’s just to me while we want to keep him healthy we have to build arm strength as well so if he is pitching well and not laboring then I would work to get him his 100 pitches.

  • I’ll go along with Johan as player of the week. Slight edge over Ruben only b/c no one expected Johan to be this good for the start of the season. Heck, some of us didn’t see him making opening day.

I was a bit surprised Johan was lifted after 6 innings and 90 pitches as well. Only thing I can think of is b/c it’s the first time he pitched on normal day’s rest as opposed to an extra day – and TC didn’t want to push it.

    • I am guessing you are right. Thinking that he couldn’t have finished the inning under 100 pitches and did not want to bring in Batista with runners on.

  • Congrats Santana. :-)
